This is a short, guided meditation for cultivating compassion. The practice will help us recognise the similarities that exist between all of us, no matter who we are, where we live, or what we are. It's an ideal practice for these times, where people are drawing inwards and forgetting our common humanity.

Meditation for compassion.

Pause what you are doing and sit comfortably.

Close your eyes.

Relax your body.

Feel yourself sitting comfortably on your chair or on the floor.

Feel yourself sitting comfortably on your chair or on the floor.

Begin to focus your attention on your breath.

Feel the outside world sliding away as you begin to draw inwards.

Gently focus your attention on your breath.

Observe the movement of your body and breath together.

Be in the space.

If your mind wanders,

Gently bring your attention back to your breath.

Stay with your breath.

Whatever happens is okay.

Just allow it to be as it is.

Whatever happens is okay.

Just allow it to be as it is.

Feel your body still and relaxed and your attention on your breath.

Focus your attention on your breath.

In times of discomfort and uneasiness,

It's easy to withdraw into our lives and ourselves.

To not be so aware of others around us,

Especially if they're different from us.

Perhaps feelings of blame or anger towards others may arise from time to time.

We are always scared of the other,

Of those unlike us.

It's a natural human reaction.

It may feel difficult to have compassion for those unlike us.

Perhaps as you sit in quietness and privacy,

You may be feeling those feelings right at this moment.

Ask yourself this question.

How am I like others?

How am I like others?

Do we look similar?

Perhaps not.

Do we wear similar clothing?

Not always.

Do we speak different languages?

Possibly.

Do we eat different things?

For sure.

Do we live our lives differently?

Undoubtedly.

Ponder this question.

How am I like others?

What do we have in common?

Do they have families too?

Do they want the best for their children?

Do they have friends,

Partners,

Spouses or lovers?

Do they want the best for them?

Do they,

Like us,

Want to be happy?

Do they,

Like us,

Want to be safe?

Do they,

Like us,

Want to be healthy?

Do they,

Like us,

Wish to live a comfortable life?

Perhaps we are not so different after all.

So underneath it all,

What is similar between us?

What do we have in common with others?

Sit quietly in your space,

Breathing smoothly and evenly.

And ponder this question.

Are we the same after all?

What do we have in common with others?

Sit quietly,

Breathe smoothly and be in this space of compassion.

And are we the same after all?

If your mind wanders,

Gently bring your attention back to your breath.

Stay with your breath.

Whatever happens is okay.

Just allow it to be as it is.

Are we the same after all?

What do we have in common with others?

Sit quietly,

Breathe smoothly and be in this space of compassion.

Being with those who are different from us.

Begin to be aware of sitting in your space.

Become aware of your body.

And gently open your eyes.
