#93. The End, The Beginning | Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali
Today, we mark the end of our spiritual journey with Patanjali. In yoga sutras, the end is a union of all energies to culminate into pure consciousness. That has been the goal of Patanjali from the very beginning. Once the meditator reaches Kaivalyam, pure emptiness, there are two possibilities. 1) To never come back from emptiness 2) To come back as a sannyasin - the one who lives likes a lotus above the mud. Namaste and a very warm welcome to all of you in this daily live meditation session with me,
Dhyansa.
We are meditating on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
The very last session on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
The journey of five months,
Everyday meditating,
Everyday expanding the consciousness,
Expanding the awareness,
The wisdom,
And letting go of all what we have been carrying with us all throughout our lives,
The pains,
The miseries,
All that has been pulling us down and not letting us be in truth,
In peace,
In love.
The journey of these five months come to an end.
Patanjali has said everything that could be said.
He has given you everything that could be given to you.
It is up to you how much receptive you are to what has been said,
What has been given,
What has been transmitted.
Five months,
Everyday there has been transmission of this energy to you.
All you had to do was remain open.
And those who remained open have received,
Have felt,
Have seen that they have moved forward in their spiritual journey.
In these moments,
In these very final moments with Patanjali,
What is left to say?
What is left to experience on this final message of kevalim,
Of nothingness,
Of emptiness,
Of ultimate freedom?
What is the true meaning of kevalim is the last message of Patanjali to you.
Patanjali has expressed to you kevalim as the ultimate freedom.
He has expressed to you kevalim as emptiness,
Kevalim as nothingness.
But all these are interpretations,
All these are experiences.
What is the true meaning of kevalim?
That very concise,
Very precise one seed if Patanjali had to give to you in the very last session,
In the very last message.
What is kevalim?
Kevalim is when everything else is not.
That which is left when everything else is not.
When the whole world falls out of your vision.
When the maya,
The illusion of the world is something that is no more for you.
That which is left is kevalim.
There is no English word for this kevalim.
You can call it emptiness because when all the illusions are gone,
What is left is emptiness.
When all what you see is no more,
Then there is nothingness.
But what is it really?
What is this emptiness?
What is this nothingness?
That which is left when everything else settles.
When the entire maya,
The illusion settles,
That is kevalim.
That aloneness that arises in you when you are in that silence,
In that awareness.
Not the ugly,
Isolated loneliness that we all go through.
Not the forced aloneness,
But the aloneness,
The ultimate divine aloneness that arises when everything else falls short.
When the whole world,
The maya of the world is not enough for you anymore.
That aloneness when you rise above all,
When the consciousness in you rises above all,
That aloneness is kevalim.
That which is left when everything else settles.
That is kevalim.
That is the ultimate message of yoga.
Because yoga began with promising you the union.
Promising you to put together everything that is broken in you,
To build a union in you.
And what is that union?
That union is that which is left.
When all that is irrelevant,
It settles in your life.
It is what is washed away from your vision,
From the maya that you are experiencing.
And that which is left,
That pure consciousness.
There is something in that nothingness.
There is something in that emptiness that is left that is kevalim.
If you have been on this journey with me through yoga sutras of Patanjali,
You must have had glimpses of this emptiness,
Of this nothingness,
Of this aloneness.
And you have tasted this beauty of this aloneness of kevalim.
Now there are two options.
There are two paths.
Either you go in this kevalim into infinity and never come back.
There is one path where once you are in kevalim,
Once you are in this infinite pure consciousness,
You never come back.
Or when you come back,
You come back as a sannyasi.
You come back as someone who is above the world,
Who is above the maya,
Who lives like a lotus above the mud.
Who is a part of the world,
Who is not renouncing the world,
Who lives in the world but is not of the world.
The consciousness is always floating above the world.
The consciousness is always disidentified with the world.
Not disinterested but disidentified.
You live into the world,
You enjoy the pleasures of this maya,
Of this world,
Of this illusion,
But you remain always as this pure consciousness.
Always disidentified,
Always at a distance.
Even in your totality,
When you are participating in your totality into the world,
Something,
A witness is still above all that you have been experiencing.
That witness,
That pure consciousness is established in you forever.
That kevalya,
That nothingness,
That emptiness,
That ultimate freedom is established in you forever.
For you,
There is no bondage anymore.
Whatever you are going through,
You are always in freedom.
That is the ultimate gift of yoga,
Of Patanjali to you all.
On this last session,
When there is nothing more to say,
For the formal closure,
Let me go through what Patanjali has to say in his last sutras before we sit in silence,
Before we sit in meditation.
Then the gunas terminate their sequence of transformation because they have fulfilled their purpose.
The gunas,
The sattva,
The rajas,
The tamas,
The balance,
The motion,
The movement and the inertia,
The three tendencies in you,
The basic fundamental nature in you,
The tendencies of the nature in you,
All have fulfilled their purpose in kevalyam.
In that state,
They all terminate their sequence of transformation.
They all no more become relevant for you.
They no more influence your state of consciousness.
Your state of consciousness remains pure,
Untouched by the gunas.
Your life,
Your experiences are still a part of nature,
Are still a part of prakriti,
Are still a part of the play created by these gunas.
But your consciousness is so pure that it is completely untouched from these gunas.
And the very last sutra.
Purushartha Shunyam Gunanam Pratipasarva Kevalyam Swarupa Pratishtha Va Chitti Saket Iti Kevalya is the state of enlightenment that follows the re-emergence of the gunas due to their becoming devoid of the object of the purusha.
In this state,
The purusha is established in his real nature,
Which is pure consciousness.
The end.
Patanjali in his sutra says the end.
He says when the pure consciousness is established in its true nature,
There is the end.
He says when these kevalya is that state of enlightenment that follows the re-emergence of the gunas due to their becoming devoid of the object of purusha.
When the consciousness is pure,
The gunas have no more influence.
They are devoid of any object which they can use to influence you.
You are above all the objects.
You are pure consciousness.
And in this pure consciousness,
There is nothing more to explore.
There is nothing more to go any further.
There is an end to the journey.
There is end to this endless journey,
This spiritual journey towards pure consciousness.
And Patanjali says the end.
He is someone who does not leave anything open.
He started the yoga sutras on a very definite note.
He said when everything in your life has not served you,
When everything what you have tried,
All your ways have fallen short of what you really need,
Then begins yoga.
That was his first sutra.
And in the end,
He says,
When you are pure consciousness,
The end.
He is so complete.
This journey with Patanjali is so complete.
It has a definite beginning.
It has a definite end.
And I am thankful to Patanjali for the spirit of Patanjali who have guided us through all these five months,
Day after day,
In all these sessions,
Opening the wisdom in all of us.
In that deep thankfulness,
Deep gratitude to Patanjali,
To whatever it has brought to us,
Let us close our eyes,
Let us sit in silence,
Let us sit in meditation.
Please close your eyes.
Take a posture that is comfortable for you.
Awareness turn inwards.
Your body is at rest with every breath,
With every exhalation,
Letting your body to find rest.
In your inner space,
A deep gratitude and thankfulness to the source of this knowledge,
To Patanjali,
And to this divine grace,
Allowing the wisdom to dawn upon us,
Allowing our awareness to rise without the divine grace,
Without Patanjali,
Without the source.
Nothing is possible.
No matter how hard you try,
No matter whatever you do,
It is not possible without the divine grace,
Without Patanjali,
Without the source of it all.
So take these moments to be in gratitude.
And in these blessings,
Move in silence.
In aloneness,
In careful limb.
Thank you.
With every breath,
Settling into silence.
Awareness in silence.
In this silence,
There is no name,
There is no form,
There is no shape.
Let go of all ideas.
Move towards this deep aloneness.
Let go of all ideas.
Towards your inner depths.
Beyond the body.
Beyond the mind.
Beyond all.
Let go of all ideas.
Let go of all ideas.
Let go of all ideas.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
In this silence,
There is awareness.
In the awareness,
There is emptiness.
In emptiness,
There is aloneness,
Careful limb.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
With every breath,
Allowing the awareness to expand.
Allowing this silence to deepen.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
The body is absorbed in silence,
In stillness.
The heart is absorbed in silence,
In stillness.
The heart is absorbed in silence,
In stillness.
What remains is silence and awareness.
What remains is pure consciousness,
Careful limb.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
All your energies in emptiness,
In silence.
Awareness back to your breath,
Back to your body.
Very gently and slowly,
You may open your eyes.
Open to a new awareness,
Open to a new silence,
Open to pure consciousness.
With that,
We close the journey with Patanjali.
Thank you very much.
Namaste.
