This meditation is an invitation to you to pause and remember your own needs as you are focussed on the rewarding and often challenging task of caring for a loved one who is slowly disappearing into dementia. This short pause along with the artwork by Gillian Rule, will help you ground yourself, acknowledge your own needs, and find inner strength amidst the challenges of caregiving. If you find it helpful I hope you will revisit it whenever you need a moment of calm or reassurance.

Transcript

Meditation for caregivers of loved ones with dementia.

I invite you to find a comfortable and a quiet place.

You can sit or lie down,

Whatever feels best for you right now.

Gently,

Let the eyes close over or lower your gaze.

And then begin to tune into your own breath.

Start by taking a deep breath in through your nose now.

And then exhaling through the mouth,

Inviting your body to release any heaviness.

And another deep inhale,

Nourishing breath coming in,

Noticing your chest expand.

And as you exhale now,

Imagine all the tension from your day leaving your body.

Each breath in now is an invitation to pause,

To slow down,

To be fully present and to care for yourself,

Just right here,

Right now,

In this moment.

So taking another couple of minutes,

Breathing in nice and long and slow.

And then a lovely,

Long,

Slow out-breath,

Releasing,

Letting go.

Letting the breath now settle into a natural rhythm.

There's nothing at all you need to change.

Just noticing your body as it breathes on its own,

The breath that is here all of the time.

Bring your awareness to the space around you.

Imagine yourself surrounded by a soft,

Protective light.

This light creates a safe and calm space just for you.

Here you are free to let go and to rest.

Free to release any worries or responsibilities,

Even if it's just for these few moments.

This is your time,

A time to recharge and reconnect with yourself.

Gently bring your awareness to the top of your head.

Notice if there is any tension or tightness there.

As you breathe in,

Imagine softening those areas.

With each exhale,

Feel the tension release and dissolve.

The head being soothed and softened.

Move your attention now to your face,

To your jaw and your neck.

These areas may hold stress or emotions.

With your next breath,

See if you might let go of any tightness or pressure in this part of the body.

Allow your jaw to soften,

Your neck to loosen and all of the muscles of the face to relax.

Continue this gentle scan now,

Bringing your attention to your shoulders,

Your arms and your hands.

With each breath,

Release any heaviness you may be holding here.

Feel your arms relax and let your hands rest softly in your lap or wherever they are being supported.

Now focus on your chest and your heart.

You may be holding emotions in this part of the body.

Sadness,

Fatigue or frustration.

On your next inhale,

Imagine your breath is gently cradling these emotions.

Acknowledging each one with compassion.

As you exhale,

Release now any heaviness in your chest,

Letting your heart lighten with every breath.

Finally,

Move your attention down to your legs,

All the way down to your feet.

Letting any remaining tension release now as your legs grow heavy and relaxed.

Supported by the ground beneath you.

Now bring to mind the immense care and energy you give to your loved one.

Acknowledge the effort,

Patience and love you offer every day.

It is normal to feel exhausted,

Overwhelmed or even guilty.

These feelings are all part of your experience and it's okay to let them be here.

Inviting you now to place one hand gently on your chest,

Right over your heart.

Feel the warmth of your hand and connect now with your own heart space.

Repeat to yourself,

Either out loud or in your mind.

I am doing enough.

I am enough.

I too deserve care and compassion.

I am doing enough.

I am enough.

I too deserve care and compassion.

Let these words sink in.

Take a deep breath and feel the truth of these words.

No matter what today has looked like.

No matter how difficult things may feel.

You are enough.

Now imagine standing by a calm flowing river.

The water is gentle and peaceful.

Always moving.

Picture yourself standing on the riverbank,

Holding a small stone in your hand.

Feel the weight of the stone in your hand right now.

This stone represents the weight of your caregiving burdens.

Any stress,

Frustration or exhaustion that you may be carrying.

Hold the stone in your hand.

Feel it.

Look at it.

Turn it over.

And when you're ready,

Gently throw the stone into the river.

Watch as the stone,

Representing the weight of your caregiving burdens,

Sinks now beneath the surface and is carried away by the current.

Notice how much lighter your body feels.

How much more space there is within you now.

The river continues to flow.

Always available to carry away the things you no longer need to hold.

Now I want you to imagine a soft light radiating from within your chest.

From your own heart space.

This light is warm,

Gentle and full of compassion.

As you inhale,

Watch this light grow brighter,

Spreading throughout your entire body.

Let it fill every part of you.

Your mind,

Your heart,

Your body,

With kindness and with healing.

This light represents the deep well of love and strength already within you.

Even on the days when you feel depleted,

This inner light remains.

Let it nurture you now.

Take a moment now to simply bask in this warmth and light.

Knowing that it is always there to support you,

Just as you support your loved one.

As we come to the end of this meditation,

Inviting you now,

Slowly,

In your own time,

To begin to bring your awareness back to your breath.

Maybe just noticing the rise and the fall of your chest.

Tuning in to the weight of your body against the ground or the chair or whatever is supporting you.

Take a few deep breaths,

Inhaling peace and exhaling any lingering tension.

Slowly,

Begin to wiggle your fingers and toes,

Gently waking your body.

When you feel ready,

Open your eyes,

Bringing with you a sense of calm and self-compassion.

Take a moment now to sit in the stillness,

Appreciating this time you've taken to care for yourself.

Remember that you are deserving of rest and care.

You are doing your best and that is enough.

Thank you. It was perfect for my needs. I did it in the bath before a day of caring.
