There are times in our lives when we need to put the world down, retreat, connect more deeply with our inner selves and go to the 'Moon Hut in the deeper mountains' whatever that might mean to us. This is a poem about that journey.

The Moon Hut.

Our minds have fingers,

There is so much they can touch.

Our hearts plump up or reel in shock from the impact of what they choose.

Some days our thoughts are happy dogs running on ahead to sniff out the day's best.

Harmless as bumblebees smoring to the next comfrey patch or butterflies landing lightly on fat dandelion heads for a colour feast and nectar fest.

But sometimes our minds are all fingers and thumbs and we have to double back.

It is a daily discipline to choose how much of the world's darkness we touch and why.

We could be incandescent with righteous rage at the injustices of this world every second of every minute of every hour.

Our collective grief could raise the sea level overnight.

But sworn enemy of joy we can't take ecocide with us on every walk even though it winds and scratches at the door.

It is joy too we are here to spend.

Celebration and active reverence give us the courage and motivation to make our best difference.

So we write ourselves into a poem that turns out to be a path into the deeper mountains.

Where there is a moon hut as round as a Mongolian yurt as protective as the encircling arms of a she bear draped with heavy tapestries of every being we have ever loved,

Human and furred.

A potbelly stove in the centre warms us through to our bones.

We cocoon ourselves in sand washed silk and the feathers of swans.

Wolves howl their songs across the tundra to each other and to us.

A snake coiled on a thick yak rug waits to shed its skin with us.

For 40 days and 40 nights our ancestors feed us warm heather honey from their fingers and take the trouble from our minds.

We have never felt so held.

Debra this is a beautiful poem. For me, your words create a journey that β€˜raises the roof’ and show the way to β€˜solid safe ground’ and reminders to travel with joy. A few months ago, I created a visualisation for myself of a calm safe place, and from my imagination arose a sacred cave carved into a mountain - a place of rest. This image surprised me, but it was a very good fit and what I needed. A retreat space I’ve revisited often. Finding your Moon Hut poem was a magical connection. Thank you. Jackie
