Is it possible that by considering death, we can have more appreciation and joyful connection to the lives we have been gifted? Guided by a positive psychology practitioner, this course invites you to shift your perspective. With greater awareness of life's uncertainty, living can be even sweeter. This ten-day course centers on death contemplations from the 11th-century monk, Atisha, helping us take stock of the shape of our lives now. By contemplating death, we can wake up to live fuller, happier lives.

Lektion 1
The Inevitability Of Death, The Invitation To Life
Welcome to a powerful and paradoxical journey—one that invites us to contemplate death as a pathway to living more fully. In this lesson, we will begin exploring the inevitability of death, not as something to fear, but as a lens that can sharpen our awareness of what truly matters. Through reflection, meditation, and honest inquiry, we will gently open the door to a deeper, more intentional experience of life.
Lektion 2
Hourglass Of Life
In this lesson, we will explore the “hourglass of life,” exploring the fact that each passing day is one we can never reclaim. Through a guided visualization and meditation, we’ll consider how the uncertainty and finiteness of time shape the way we feel, choose, and live. This is an invitation to notice the preciousness of today—and to begin holding our time with greater awareness and intention.
Lektion 3
Making Space For What Matters Most
In this practice, we explore how our time is often taken up by distractions and obligations, and how each of these competes for space in our days. A guided visualization invites us to consider how to live more proactively, placing what is most meaningful at the center of our lives.
Lektion 4
The Gift Of Not Knowing
In this reflection, we explore the uncertainty of our end and the powerful invitation it offers to live more fully today. While we often move through life assuming there will always be more time, this contemplation reminds us that our days are not fixed and the future is never guaranteed. In turning toward this truth, we open ourselves to greater presence, deeper appreciation, and the possibility of living each moment with greater intention and aliveness.
Lektion 5
So Many Ways
In this time together, we will reflect on the many causes of death and the quiet miracle of being alive in this moment. While our lives can feel stable and predictable, this contemplation invites us to recognize just how fragile and miraculous our existence truly is. In holding both the vulnerability and the wonder of life together, we deepen our appreciation for the simple, extraordinary fact that we are here.
Lektion 6
This Fragile Body
During this contemplation, we will celebrate both the extraordinary complexity and fragility of our bodies. In a guided visualization, we turn toward the intricate systems that sustain us moment by moment, allowing ourselves to feel both awe and gratitude for this vulnerable form we inhabit. By recognizing the complex symphony that makes up our physical form, we open to a deeper appreciation of these fascinating bodies we inhabit.
Lektion 7
What Love Cannot Do
In this time together, we reflect on the fact that while love profoundly connects us, it cannot shield us from death. In this contemplation, we gently turn toward both the beauty and the vulnerability of our relationships, recognizing how precious our time with others truly is. While death may be a solitary journey, the love we share can create a legacy that endures beyond our final breaths.
Lektion 8
Our Stuff Won't Matter
In this meditation, we reflect on the ways we use our possessions, achievements, and external identities to shape and sometimes shield our sense of self. By recognizing that at the end of life, all material things are left behind, we explore how relevant they are to our authentic selves. By loosening our attachment to these layers, we open space to reconnect with what feels most free and true within us.
Lektion 9
Letting Go Of The Body
This is our final contemplation from Atisha: the understanding that our body, while a constant companion throughout life, cannot ultimately accompany us beyond death. In this practice, we explore our identification with the physical form and begin to sense the deeper layers of who we are beyond what is seen or felt. By loosening our attachment to the body, we open to a wider awareness of presence, stillness, and the enduring essence that has always been here.
Lektion 10
The Final Passage: Returning To Your True Essence
In this final meditation, we walk through a guided visualization where we imagine ourselves at the ripe age of 101, surrounded by family and friends, transitioning from this life to what is next. As we envision our end-of-life experience, we imagine what it feels like to have the body slow down, stop, and what it would be like to have the spirit released, expanding into the essence of who we truly are.
