Welcome to a meditation on cultivating positivity on the theme of detachment to care deeply.

Taking some deep comfortable breaths.

Breathe into your belly,

Not your chest.

Allowing the abdomen to rise and fall.

As you begin to slow down,

I want you to observe the flickering scenes on the screen of your mind.

Now recall the last time when you did not get what you wanted or it was being blocked in some way.

How did that make you feel?

Most likely you automatically started to think your happiness and satisfaction are being denied by the other.

In truth,

Your happiness and contentment are being sabotaged entirely by yourself because of your attachment to the outcome that you want.

But if you think it is being denied by them,

You will blame them,

Project your pain on them,

Play the role of victim and then try to defeat them in order to become victorious and thereby get what you want.

Such is the way of all conflict,

All war.

Becoming the master of your mind with the ability to discern the different levels of reality requires the practice of detached observation.

This has been an ancient practice of spiritual seekers for millennia.

It is the practice of becoming aware of oneself as the observer of everything.

It is like sitting in the cinema but not losing the awareness of oneself as the viewer of the changing colors and forms on the screen.

It is contrary to the belief that the whole point of going to the movies is to lose oneself in the movie,

To escape into the story being projected on the screen.

This is the moment when what is known as attachment happens.

Become aware that I the being,

I am simply observing whatever is happening on the screen of the mind.

I am not the actor,

Event or scene.

I am just the observer.

I am sitting back and watching.

This practice gradually restores my ability not to lose the awareness of being the watcher,

The witness,

The observer of what is occurring on the screen of my mind.

The result is you become aware of two things.

The first is a profound inner peacefulness that brings with it a feeling of stability and serenity.

The second is a growing awareness of yourself as the master of your life.

You begin to see yourself as a master of your life as opposed to being at the mercy of others or events.

When you are attached to a specific outcome or the image of a specific goal,

When you are attached to the idea that the other has to change,

That's what keeps you close to other possibilities,

Options and new ways forward.

It shuts down your creativity and your ability to work with others to find solutions.

Before we can resolve conflict,

It's necessary to dissolve other part of the conflict and that means learning the art of detachment.

It does not mean that you do not care about the other or that you avoid the other.

In fact,

It's only possible to extend care and connect authentically when you are not attached to anything.

When you are attached,

You become too busy with your attachment,

Defending it,

Protecting it and fearing the loss of it.

And that mental busyness is what makes you less able to connect with the other openly,

Transparently and authentically.

Detachment opens me up to a deep and authentic connection.

Now apply this technique of detachment to that situation.

Where you were denied what you wanted or were being blocked in some way.

How would you have done something differently?

How would that have changed the relationship between you and that person or that environment?

What would it feel like to have an open,

Transparent and authentic interaction?

Notice the sense of mastery that is slowly trickling into your being.

Notice the feeling of stability,

Serenity and strength.

Now extend that serenity into your environment with each exhale.

Notice the sense of stability,

Serenity and strength.

You are spreading the goodness into the atmosphere around you,

Starting with the immediate circle right around your body.

And let that pool of calmness ripple out further and further away from you.

This serenity touches everybody in your building,

Extending out into the community.

And further it touches everybody in your neighborhood.

And everyone in your town.

It touches everybody in your state.

Extending that out further into your entire country.

And now finally let the entire globe experience your pool of serenity.

And all species,

Plants,

The animals,

The seven point something billion humans,

The elements of nature,

The earth,

The water,

The wind,

Fire and ether are all experiencing the pool of serenity that exudes from me.

Music Now notice how you feel right now at this moment,

Just in your being.

Music Acknowledge this feeling with gratitude and see yourself going throughout the day with this feeling.

Music I thank you for joining me in this exercise of cultivating positivity.

I hope you'll join me again tomorrow in another exercise.

Until then,

Be well.
