Perhaps life has been feeling like too much lately.
Too many decisions,
Too many responsibilities,
Too many uncertainties,
And too many people needing something from you.
Perhaps you've noticed yourself waking,
Already tired.
Already bracing yourself for what's to come.
Maybe you've caught yourself wanting to pull the covers back over your head just for a little longer.
Carrying today's responsibilities,
Tomorrow's pressures,
And next week's worries all at once.
If that's where you find yourself today,
I'm so glad our paths crossed.
For the next little while,
You don't have to carry any of it.
Let's put it all down together.
Take one slow breath.
Notice how your breath has been waiting here for you all along.
Feel the surface beneath your body.
The quiet support you may have forgotten was there.
Feel the air circling against your skin.
Listen without searching.
What is the first sound that finds you?
Perhaps there is another.
And another.
Now,
If it feels comfortable,
Gently open your eyes.
Simply notice what is around you.
Perhaps you see a chair,
A window.
A tree,
A lamp.
Mentally name each one.
Chair.
Tree.
Two drops.
Window,
Light.
Did you find a lion chasing you?
Or was it only the images your mind has been rehearsing?
One of the remarkable things about our brains is that they often respond to imagined danger as though it were happening right now.
A difficult conversation.
A frightening possibility.
A rejection.
A future we cannot yet see.
Our bodies begin preparing for something that hasn't arrived.
But when we gently return to what is actually here,
This room,
This breath,
This moment,
Our brains receive new information.
I'm here.
I'm safe enough.
The danger my mind imagined is not happening right now.
Allow your eyes to softly close again if you wish.
Return to the quiet landscape within,
And let's continue gently discovering what is actually here through your sense of touch.
Notice the gentle weight of your clothing resting against your skin.
Feel where your body meets the chair.
Feel the firm ground beneath your feet.
Notice how what your senses are discovering is very different from the stories your mind has been telling.
You are here,
Not inside tomorrow,
Not inside yesterday.
Here.
Sometimes,
When life feels overwhelming,
We begin believing that everything belongs in this moment.
That everything needs to be resolved right now.
Every decision,
Every possibility,
Every fear,
Every future.
As though your heart were expected to carry an entire lifetime in one moment.
No wonder you have grown so tired.
Notice your eyes.
Have they been searching all day,
Looking ahead,
Scanning for what might go wrong?
See if they can rest,
Just for a moment,
As though they've realized there is nothing they need to solve right now.
Notice your hands.
Perhaps they've forgotten what it feels like to be empty.
Feel your fingers slowly uncurl like the soft petals of a flower opening.
Notice how nothing is slipping away.
Everything that truly matters will still be there when you return.
Notice your breathing.
There's no need to make it deeper.
Feel your ribs making a little more room for your breath.
Like curtains opening to the morning light.
Simply allow your breath to remember its own rhythm.
Allow your spine to be like a fern slowly unfurling after rain.
There is nothing you need to force.
Your body already knows how to soften.
Now,
Imagine that your hands have been filled with smooth river stones.
Each stone represents something you've been carrying.
This one,
Tomorrow's responsibilities.
This one,
A conversation you've been replaying.
This one,
Someone you're trying not to disappoint.
This one,
The future you've been trying to figure out.
Perhaps there are even stones that don't belong to you at all.
Yet somehow,
You've been carrying those two.
Notice how tightly your hands have been holding them.
How little space remains for anything else,
For beauty,
For rest,
For wonder.
Without deciding which stone matters most,
Without solving a single problem,
Gently place one stone on the earth.
Listen to the quiet sound it makes.
Another.
And another.
Until your hands remember what emptiness feels like.
Not emptiness as loss,
But emptiness as space.
Room for breath.
Room for joy.
Room for this moment to arrive.
Notice how much easier it is to receive this moment with open hands than with hands full of stones.
Imagine now a vast blue sky stretching endlessly above you.
Notice how the sky is wider than all the storms that cross it.
Like the sky,
Can you sense that there is something in you far larger than what feels overwhelming?
Rest there for a moment.
Lean into that spaciousness,
Into the quiet steadiness beneath all that you carry.
Into that place that has not been overwhelmed.
Into the part of you that can hold it all without being swallowed by it.
Take another slow breath.
Notice how your body feels now.
Perhaps your jaw has softened.
Perhaps your shoulders have lowered just a little.
Perhaps there is the tiniest bit more room inside your chest.
Life may still ask things of you when you leave here,
The conversations and responsibilities and the unknowns.
They haven't disappeared.
But perhaps they no longer need to arrive all at once.
One Conversation.
One breath.
One step.
One moment.
As you return to your day.
I hope you carry a little less and notice a little more.
The warmth of sunlight through a window,
The taste of your tea,
The sounds of birds outside,
The feeling of water flowing through your hands.
Life has always been waiting for you there,
In the spaces between everything you've been trying to hold.
Thank you for allowing me to spend these moments with you.
Know that I'm rooting for you.
Until next time.
