Observing body and mind, we can see they their spontaneous functioning. The body takes care of itself. Thoughts come up and vanish by themselves. Still, we are used to living through our minds, as if the thoughts are us. Now, through self-enquiry, let's look: to whom are these thoughts really arising? Is there really a person in us thinking and suffering thoughts? Simply looking within, we will discover no-one - just a spacious silence, an ocean of peace.

Observe the sitting itself.

The physical presence.

The sense of the body touching the seat.

The cushion or chair.

Observe this experience of body.

Observe the sense of how it is right now.

How the mind is noisy or quiet.

Strong thoughts or few.

Only observing,

Not getting involved.

Realise that you're just observing.

Thoughts are playing in their own rhythm,

In their own natural way.

We can do nothing but observe that.

We cannot plan the thoughts or make the thoughts.

They're just coming up,

Playing and disappearing.

Observe this.

Now when we get drawn into a stream of thought,

What happens really?

Suddenly we're into some opinion,

Some scheme,

Some plan,

Some memory.

That seems like nothing else exists but these thoughts,

These images.

As if we're hypnotised by our very own thoughts.

She reacts,

Feels either happy or worried or heavy or claustrophobic.

Depending on what the content of the thoughts is.

But now raise your awareness.

Notice these are thoughts.

They are not a happening.

Outside they're inside happening.

Very fleeting.

Very changeful.

So keep watching the thoughts when they come.

And they will lose their power.

Their importance.

Their reality.

And the space opens up.

So let's investigate this more.

When thoughts come they can feel very personal.

What I want,

What my story is,

What I have to do,

What I did wrong,

What I did right.

I was treated.

And the body contracts and it feels very personal,

Very much about me.

Observe this.

And now investigate who is this me really?

Right now can you find any such person?

If you look,

You will find some physical sensations that are changing.

Try to catch a thought.

Look where is the thought right now?

Look clearly.

No thought can be grasped.

So instead of just blindly suffering the thoughts,

It is important to watch and really observe what is happening here.

To whom are these thoughts actually talking?

So look at that.

Observe.

Can you find a someone inside that is suffering the thoughts,

That is hearing the thoughts?

Look,

Look now.

All you will find is space and silence.

So to resume when thoughts come up,

Maybe strong thoughts,

Try this question.

To whom are these thoughts actually talking?

Can I find that one and look inside?

To whom are these thoughts talking?

Who is the one receiving them?

You will find no one.

Only this pure presence,

This quietude.

Try it.

Even though most thoughts say I,

I feel,

I think,

I want.

When looking for this I who wants and thinks,

If you look for it,

You cannot find it.

Who is the I that wants and look?

Just a sense of space,

Just a presence,

But no person,

No shape.

Or a sense of the body.

But is it the body,

Is it these sensations of your hands and feet?

Is that what is wanting or thinking?

Clearly not.

They are just sensations that are felt arising.

Not even felt by someone,

But just sensations arising.

Sometimes also here you could ask who is feeling these sensations and look.

You cannot find someone.

Who is hearing sound?

Can I find the hearer?

No,

There's just sound.

And there's a being,

An emptiness.

What joy.

What freedom.

So try this inquiry.

It's not about analyzing or thinking,

It's about looking.

Looking clearly.

Who am I really?

Who is here?

If this is all too difficult or too complicated,

Then just be and that's enough.

It will bring you to the same place of quiet spaciousness,

Of simple being.

Just be.

Just be quiet.

And peace is here.

You can do that,

But now it's empty.

Great guidance. The recognition of the inner space calms everything down for me. I am beginning to get to an understanding of Ramana’s assertion that there is no ego.
