Happy Friday and welcome back to the Wild Free Well podcast.
I know it's been a hot minute and yeah,
I'm not going to make any excuses.
You know,
The world is what it is and I am who I am.
And so I'm just happy to be back and happy to be chatting with you guys again.
And today I want to talk about thriving in a,
Let's say post COVID world,
Even though we're not really in the post part yet in the COVID world.
It's something that actually got brought up because I recently had someone post a comment on one of my old podcast episodes about how the advice I was sharing was clearly pre-COVID.
I can totally feel like,
I can totally understand that it feels like we're kind of up shit creek without a paddle right now,
But I'm not sure that that's the whole truth.
I want to break this moment down for a second.
So yes,
Things are scary.
Yes,
Things are unknown and uncertain.
Yes,
This virus is real and it's dangerous.
Yes,
People are dying and it's terrible.
Yes,
People are losing their jobs and suffering in ways that we haven't experienced in many years.
Yes,
The economy is being impacted by this situation and yes,
Things are challenging.
And while all of that might be true,
It matters what you're feeding your mind.
It still matters because you still matter.
None of that has changed.
And it matters what you're telling yourself maybe now more than ever.
And I want to make something clear.
I am speaking from a privileged position.
I'm not jobless.
I'm not at risk of losing my house.
I am in good health.
I can afford all of my basic needs.
I'm lucky.
I am very,
Very lucky.
And I think that recognizing privilege when we're talking about mindset and when we're talking about personal development is huge because not everybody has access to the same resources.
Not everybody has access to,
You know,
Somebody who inspires them or to like social media or to a cell phone or to internet or to podcasts or insight time or wherever you're listening to this.
Not everybody has that access.
And it's important,
But that doesn't make this work any less relevant.
And I know that that can be really hard.
And I know that there's going to be people who don't agree with that opinion.
And I'm cool with that because our differences are what make the world go round.
But in my opinion,
There is really nothing that matters more than this work in the entire world.
And that includes right now.
That includes when things are difficult.
That includes when things are challenging because it's in these moments that we test ourselves and we see what we've learned and we see what we're capable of.
And like,
I'm going to be honest with you,
Am I passing that test personally right now?
I would say no,
I would absolutely say no.
But I think that there's so much to be gained,
So much to be learned from this.
And I think that in these moments,
More than any other moment,
This is when we have,
Maybe we feel like we have nothing.
And this is when we most need something to believe in.
We need to feel like there is hope.
We need something to hold on to and something to believe in.
And so here is my advice or my suggestion to you.
Believe in yourself.
Believe in your innate power.
Believe in your mind.
Believe that you can create worlds.
Believe in your effort and your drive and your perseverance.
Believe in the wonder and the miracle that is your very existence.
If you're listening to this,
No matter your situation,
It means that you too have a certain amount of privilege.
And how fortunate are we to be in this space?
And how lucky are we to be in this time and to have access to the resources that we have access to?
And if that's the case,
Please take a moment,
Believe in yourself and love yourself.
And don't just do it for you.
Not that that's selfish if you are.
If that's your motivation,
Then like get on with your bad self.
That's totally fine.
But love yourself and believe in yourself and the things that you're capable of.
And do it for all the other people who don't have the same opportunity that you do.
And as I say this,
I realize how much I've been taking for granted.
And even though I've listed my privilege,
I've said that I have my basic needs and then some like I have so much available to me and I'm so lucky and I'm so grateful.
I'm recognizing now that I actually didn't fully realize just how much I had available to me.
And I realize now the bad habits that I have,
Like I worry daily.
I have a tendency towards stress and overwhelm and anxiety despite my good fortune and my privilege.
I take so much for granted that other people don't even have access to.
And as I sit here speaking to all of you,
And I think about my own situation,
I wonder how can I change that?
And I can change that by using my privilege and my power to uplift myself and expand that to uplift others as well.
We are living in a really unique time.
It's not just about the virus,
But of course,
The Black Lives movement matter.
Black,
What?
The Black Lives Matter movement,
Sorry.
And all of this is so important.
And we have to be there for each other and we have to be serving each other and giving and educating ourselves massively,
Both in terms of the virus,
I would say,
Especially depending on what part of the world you live in and on racism and the systems that uphold it.
And I totally think that we all should be doing that.
I know I'm doing work in private on that.
But I also believe that if we are not showing up for ourselves,
We cannot possibly under any circumstances show up for someone else.
And I think that this is an unpopular opinion right now,
Given the situation that we're in in the world,
And I'm okay with that.
And I welcome constructive feedback and commentary,
Like let's have a discussion about it if you don't agree with me.
I'm not really here for like negativity.
If you're going to just attack me,
There's just no point.
I don't think we should be attacking anyone ever,
But I welcome being educated.
I'm willing to be,
I'm willing to be corrected or shown that I'm wrong.
But I really genuinely believe that we cannot help others if we cannot help ourselves first.
I cannot give to you if my cup is empty.
You cannot give to anyone else,
To your family,
To your children,
To your workplace,
To your greater community,
To the world at large,
If your cup is empty,
If you're not first willing to give to yourself.
And like,
Let's take a second.
Can you give?
Yeah,
I mean,
Absolutely you can.
How long is,
How sustainable can that possibly be if you're not taking care of yourself first?
So I really think that we need to use our power and privilege to take care of ourselves and then show up as a beacon of light in the world and do the work that is necessary to break down these systems and to make things better.
I'm still on this path of being educated and it's going to take a long time.
I don't think that we can undo something that's been a problem for years in one fell swoop.
But I think that we do need to give it the old college try,
Of course.
We need to be doing as much as we can.
And that starts at home.
That starts with us.
That starts with taking care of ourselves and then taking care of our families and raising educated and intelligent children who take care of themselves as well so that we can go out in the world and do the work that matters,
That do the work that is necessary to educate people to break down systems to survive this pandemic together collectively,
Not individually,
But together.
It's so important.
And I just believe that you can get so much farther in life when you're engaging with the world from a place of self love and self belief.
You can overcome anything,
Including this challenging time.
You can believe in your inherent power,
Your inherent goodness and your inherent worthiness.
You are allowed that.
You are given that because you are alive,
Because you exist.
That is your privilege and your honor and your right no matter what to be able to believe that you are powerful and that you are worthy and that you are lovable and that you are capable and that your life has meaning,
That your life has an impact on the world at large,
That you make the world a better place.
This is your right.
You deserve this.
So please,
Please,
Please believe it.

Thank you, Candace, for your reflection. I am in a somewhat similar place: working to understand my privilege and in what ways it can be "leveraged" to serve others.
