Join me on this journey of adventure. There will be courage. There will be superheroes. And there will be candy! Whatever your child's anxiety - maybe on getting a shot or giving blood or something else - this is the meditation to help them get ready by channeling their inner superhero. This is the first of two meditations. The 2nd one is to listen to during the procedure. Look for "Getting It Done - Building Bravery at the Doctor's." I hope this helps make things easier on both of you!

Welcome.

I am so happy you're here to join me on a journey of adventure.

There will be courage,

There will be superheroes,

And there will be candy.

It's gonna be awesome.

Before we get started with this journey,

Let's breathe together.

Put your hands on your belly.

Take a nice big slow breath into the belly and feel it get big.

Then easy breath out and feel it get smaller.

Breathe in.

The belly fills up slowly like a balloon.

Breathe out.

The belly slowly deflates.

One more round.

Nice slow breath in.

Then breathe out.

In our journey today,

We're going to use our imaginations,

And there's nothing more powerful in the world than our imagination.

Our imagination can change how we feel.

It can change what we believe,

And our imagination can change how we see ourselves.

Let's get prepared for our journey.

First off,

Let's talk about courage.

What do you think it means?

You might have answered,

Never being scared.

And you know what?

That is absolutely 100% wrong.

Sorry.

True courage,

Real courage,

Is when something scares you and you choose to do it anyway.

Because you are strong and you are brave.

That is real courage.

On this journey,

We're gonna make your strength and bravery get really big,

And this is gonna make your fear smaller,

And that's gonna help you plug into your courage.

Sound good?

Okay.

So if you had to pick a color for courage,

What would it be?

It can be anything under the rainbow.

Any color that when you look at it,

It makes you feel strong and brave.

Maybe a deep blue or a bright pink.

Maybe a dark red or a rich purple.

What color speaks most to you?

See that color in your mind's eye.

Now if you're stuck,

How about you borrow my color for now?

I'm happy to share it with you.

My color of courage is silver,

Glowing and bright.

Now use your magical mind to imagine a long piece of fabric in that exact color,

The color of courage.

The fabric feels good in your hands.

It's warm and soft.

It glows with the light of courage.

Do you know what this fabric is?

It's your superhero cape,

And it's just for you.

In your mind's eye,

See yourself swaying that cape around and put it over your shoulders.

Do you feel how it settles over your arms?

How it covers you from the back of your neck all the way down to your ankles?

You are now covered in the color of courage,

And that cape looks awesome on you.

Feel how it's warm and protective.

It makes you feel strong and confident when you're wearing it.

Okay,

Now that you're dressed like a superhero,

You need to stand like one too.

So if it's possible,

Wherever you are right now,

Stand up.

And if it's not,

Sitting is good too.

Whether you're standing or sitting,

Firmly plant your feet on the ground.

If you're standing,

Your feet are a little bit spread out.

Standing or sitting,

Your back is straight.

Lift your chin and put your hands on your hips,

Elbows out.

You are now a superhero.

Strong,

Brave,

And courageous.

I'm going to ask you to say some things to yourself.

If you're someplace you can say them out loud,

That's great.

If not,

Say them silently in your head.

Say to yourself,

I am strong.

Now take a big belly breath in and out.

Say to yourself,

I am brave.

Big belly breath in and out.

Say to yourself,

I am strong.

Nice big belly breath in and out.

Say to yourself,

I am brave.

Big belly breath in and out.

Remember,

We're still standing in our superhero pose.

Feet are planted,

Hands are on the hips,

Elbows are out to the sides,

Taking up lots of space.

Last time,

Say to yourself,

I am strong.

Big belly breath in and out.

Say to yourself,

I am brave.

Big belly breath in and out.

Now,

I'm going to tell you a secret.

You can keep standing or sitting in your superhero pose while I tell you this.

Do you know what superheroes love more than anything else?

This is a really big secret,

Which is probably why you haven't seen this in any movies or cartoons that you've watched.

They love,

Love,

Love lollipops.

Isn't that awesome?

And that's because superheroes are really smart and they know that having a lollipop when you're doing something you don't really want to do,

It just makes it easier.

A real scientific study has proven that this is true.

So if your parent or caregiver has a real lollipop to share with you,

That's great.

And if you're at a doctor's office,

A lot of times you can ask for one and they'll have one to share with you.

But if you don't have a real lollipop,

We're going to imagine one.

Remember the power of imagination and it's going to be just as good.

Think of your absolute favorite flavor for this imaginary lollipop.

Bring it to mind.

And since this is a magical lollipop,

How about we make it maybe the color of courage?

Why not,

Right?

Or you can make it any color that would make it really,

Really delicious for you.

Okay,

Brave,

Courageous,

Strong superhero,

You're ready.

You've got your cape,

You've got your lollipop,

You've got your big belly breaths,

And you know that you're brave.

I am really,

Really proud of you.

My grandson listened to this with me and said building people up and then saying 100% you’re wrong sounded like a put down. He’s 9, but well, there you go. Just thought I’d pass it along. I liked the idea of the meditation very much. Thank you 🙏🏽💐🐾🌹🙏🏼🌸🦋🌷🐾
