Welcome to your sleep practice.
I invite you to find a comfortable position for sleep.
Whatever that looks like tonight,
On your back,
On your side,
However the body wants to be.
Allow yourself to arrive here now.
Not just physically,
But the whole of you.
You don't have anywhere else to be,
Nothing to do,
Anywhere to go.
Close your eyes and just for a moment,
Let the eyelids be heavy.
Not forced,
Just released.
Let the weight of the eyelids do what they want to do.
Take one breath in through the nose,
Fill the chest,
Fill the stomach.
Hold it just for a second at the top and let it go.
Fully release the breath all the way out.
One more in through the nose,
Easy and full,
And out completely.
Very good.
That breath is the last effortful thing you need to do tonight.
From here,
You're just along for the ride.
Continue to follow my voice and it's perfectly natural if you do or do not hear all of my words.
If you drift off for a moment,
Simply allow your attention to return to the sound of my voice and follow along.
Now we'll move to the body,
But before I want to offer you something very simple,
A word,
A phrase.
What are you here for tonight,
Right now?
What do you want to receive?
I'll offer a few and one may land.
If none of them do,
Find your own word.
Perhaps your word of intent is restored.
That sense of being refilled or returning back to yourself,
Or maybe that word is steady,
Grounded,
Unhurried,
Anchored,
Maybe clear like the mind after a long run,
Or perhaps it's even quiet,
That deep settling kind underneath all the noise.
Take a few moments,
Let one land without forcing it,
And there's no wrong answer here,
Just whatever is most true for you in this moment tonight.
Hold that word once,
Let it move through your whole body like a slow exhale.
Visualize that word as present now,
Becoming real in the whole of your being,
And repeat that word to yourself three times now,
And then gently set it aside.
You don't need to carry your intent,
It's already doing the work now.
And now we're going to move awareness slowly through the body,
One area at a time.
This is not a body check,
There is nothing to assess,
Nothing to evaluate.
We're just placing attention briefly and gently on each part of the body,
Attention like a hand resting on that part for a moment before moving on,
And whatever you find in each location,
Welcome it.
Tension,
Ease,
Numbness,
Warmth,
All of it,
It all belongs here.
You don't need to change anything,
Just notice,
Welcome,
And move on.
Now,
Attention to your right foot,
The right foot,
The right big toe,
Second toe,
Third,
Fourth,
Little toe,
The whole of the right foot together,
The ankle,
Calf,
The back of the right knee,
The kneecap,
The right thigh,
The right hip.
And now attention to the left foot,
The left big toe,
Second toe,
Third toe,
Fourth toe,
Little toe,
Ankle,
Calf,
Back of the left knee,
Kneecap,
Left thigh,
Left hip.
Welcome the whole of the left and right legs at the same time,
Attention moving to the pelvis now,
Feeling the pelvis released into the support beneath you,
Attention to the belly,
The lower belly,
The upper belly,
The chest,
Left side of the chest,
Middle of the chest,
Right side of the chest,
Attention to both shoulders,
Feel the weight of them across the collarbones,
The whole torso,
At the same time,
Attention now to your right thumb,
The right thumb,
Index finger,
Middle finger,
Ring finger,
Little finger,
Welcome the whole right hand,
The palm,
Back of the hand,
The wrist,
Forearm,
Elbow,
Upper arm,
Right shoulder,
The whole right arm at the same time,
Attention to the left thumb now,
Left index finger,
Middle finger,
Ring finger,
Little finger,
The whole left hand,
The palm,
Back of the hand,
Wrist,
Forearm,
Elbow,
Upper arm,
Left shoulder,
The whole of the left arm at the same time now,
Both arms together now,
The right and the left together at the same time,
And feel the whole of the right side of the body,
The whole right side of the body,
The whole left side of the body,
The base of the skull,
The scalp,
Forehead,
Both eyebrows releasing,
The space between the eyebrows,
The right eye,
The left eye,
Both ears,
The nose,
The cheeks,
The jaw,
Allow it to soften,
The lips,
The chin,
The whole face and head together at once,
Welcomed exactly as it is,
Attention to the throat,
The heart,
The belly,
The feet,
And now the whole body at once,
The whole body at once,
Complete,
Contained,
Every part welcomed,
Nothing let out,
Welcome a sense of ease,
A sense of ease like the body being carried in water,
Let that image arrive and settle,
And now within that sense of the body being in water,
Notice a sense of floating,
The body rising slightly effortlessly,
The water doing all the work,
The body effortless,
No gripping,
No bracing,
No holding together by force,
Just the natural buoyancy of body resting in water,
Welcome that sensation of floating in the chest and the limbs,
Welcome whatever arrives,
And now gently,
Without losing the water,
Let the sensation begin to shift towards sinking,
Not falling,
Not losing ground,
Slow,
Deliberate,
Trusting,
The body releasing downward into something that can hold it,
Gravity not as working against you,
But pulling you downward toward rest,
Toward the surface beneath you that rises to meet your weight,
Welcome every ounce of heaviness,
And then return to the sense of the body rising,
Floating,
The body sinking,
Weighty,
Pulled down,
And again the body rising,
Floating,
And the body sinking,
And now feel both sensations at the same time,
Floating and sinking together,
The lightness that rises in the chest on an inhale,
The heaviness that releases through the body on the exit,
The body suspended between both of these,
Not choosing,
Not correcting,
Both are true,
Both are welcome,
Welcome the body exactly as it is right now,
Without asking it to be anything other than what is,
Let all ideas release now,
Just rest as awareness,
Come back to the word you chose at the beginning,
Just let it rise,
Quiet,
Restored,
Steady or clear,
Whatever your intent,
Let it move through your awareness one time,
Slowly like a current running beneath everything,
And then let it go,
It's done its work,
Your body knows exactly what to do from here,
You don't need to guide it or manage it or stay awake from it,
Recovery is already happening,
It started the moment you closed your eyes,
It's already on its way.
