I remember the exact moment when astrology stopped being just a vague idea for me,
And became something real,
Something tangible.
I was in my early 20s,
Standing in the back of a bookshop in Sydney,
Flipping through a book that had caught my attention.
Nodal Astrology by Jan Spiller.
The North Node is a mysterious point in the birth chart that supposedly reveals our soul's direction in life.
At the time,
I knew nothing about this.
So I looked mine up,
Gemini in the 12th house,
And innocently started reading.
I wasn't expecting to be suddenly struck by a thunderbolt with every sentence.
How is this possible?
It was all I could think.
I was being demystified on the spot by someone who I'd never met.
And what stood out the most was that this would be a lifetime of communication.
Learning to speak in a way that opened doors,
And to give voice to the knowledge that I had accrued in past life.
Deep down,
I knew this to be true.
Still,
It literally described to a tee my growing frustrations,
Not being heard all these years,
Continuously shut down before I could even open my mouth.
And so,
Of all the modalities that I have tested and tried over the past 40 years of my spiritual adventure,
Astrology,
To this day,
Remains one of a handful of practices that I look to.
Not to plot out my future or to know what's going to happen to me,
But to deepen my understanding of myself.
I've been studying it now for over 35 years,
And consulting professionally for 20.
Observing patterns and seeing time and time again how this ancient system always gets to the heart of things.
Not as fate or destiny either,
But as a mirror into our soul,
Helping us to see ourselves in what we are.
That we may not otherwise be able to.
But there are misconceptions about astrology that we need to contend with.
At least address a few.
For example,
One major misconception is that astrology is exclusively a form of fortune-telling.
That may be true,
That a competent astrologer can calculate events and possibilities more or less accurately.
But astrology is about so,
So much more than that.
In all my years practicing,
I have never used it as a way of knowing what was coming up for me.
Instead,
I always saw it as a framework for self-study,
Helping me build a life for myself that is aligned with my soul's mission rather than conditioning and socialization.
In essence,
Astrology deals with cycles and the relationship between the personal and the universal,
Revealing patterns of energy,
Seasons of growth,
Potential,
And even lessons that as souls we are working through.
Another misconception is that astrology is predominantly about your sun sign.
I'm a Leo or I'm a Taurus or a Virgo,
And this means this,
This,
And that.
That's like saying you know someone just because you know their birthday.
But there's an entire world of influences found in your birth chart that make up who you are.
For example,
The moon,
Mercury,
Venus,
Mars,
Jupiter,
Saturn.
Then there are the all-important relationship dynamics between the planets that provide substantial insights about our innate talents,
Challenges,
And so much more.
A third misconception,
And this is perhaps the most misinformed,
Is that astrology is for the small-minded and woo-woo types.
But the fact is many of the most powerful and influential figures in history used astrology.
Carl Jung,
For example,
One of the greatest minds in psychology,
He used astrology in his practice.
As did Isaac Newton,
The most influential scientist of all perhaps,
Who once shut down a skeptic saying,
Sir,
I have studied the matter,
You have not.
So if astrology isn't exclusively about predicting the future or putting people and personality boxes,
What is it?
At its core,
Astrology is just a language,
And like any language it has its ABCs called glyphs or symbols.
Each with a specific meaning.
Think of them as the building blocks of the astrological lexicon.
They're not just arbitrary doodles.
Each glyph is a visual representation that encapsulates core astrological concepts.
And so what the astrologer does,
Fluent in this celestial tongue,
Is interpret the symbols and their interactions,
Helping individuals navigate their personal journeys with greater clarity and insight.
The important thing to understand is that the planets don't control us.
They reflect,
Rather,
The type and relationship of the energy within us.
The easiest way to think of it,
Perhaps,
Is that the moment of birth,
Represented by your birth chart,
Is a specific signature of energy,
Or blueprint,
If you will,
Of your unique energetic makeup.
It can show things like your core strengths,
Your challenges,
Your emotional landscape,
Your inner world,
How you relate to others even,
And what you seek in love and relationship.
Your chart can even highlight inherited family patterns,
Clarifying challenges that you're here to grow through.
And so this is why astrology matters.
Particularly in an age like ours,
Where so many feel abandoned and lost,
Uncertain about who they are and why they are here.
Astrology provides a framework of learning that can help us navigate our lives,
To take back control.
Your birth chart is a navigation tool that not only tells you about who you are,
It also reveals the destination that your soul incarnated to travel in this life.
The best thing one can do when lost is to check a map,
Not continue to wander in circles,
Hoping for the best.
Your birth chart is that map.
My north node,
Gemini in the 12th house,
Told me that my current life involves communication and learning to share knowledge that pertains to spiritual truth.
And so I began to align my efforts to this understanding.
And the more I did,
The more my life unfolded in ways that felt meaningful to me.
The same can be true for anyone.
Our birth chart holds important clues about us.
The kind of soul we are and the reason we incarnated.
Now,
Should this be interesting to everyone?
Evidently not.
