Welcome to Rise to Realize podcast,
The path from true happiness to enlightenment.
Hello everyone,
I'm Arda Azdemir.
Today I want to talk about the very first phase of personal transformation journey.
Meeting the part of you I call the not real self.
If you built a reasonably good life,
A happy family and successful career,
And even done some spiritual work or therapy,
Yet you still feel that your life is not as fulfilling as it should be,
This episode is for you.
Many people I work with describe a subtle,
Persistent feeling.
On the outside,
Things look fine.
You function,
You show up.
People might even see you as successful,
Kind,
Reliable,
Or strong.
But inside,
There's a quiet sense of mismatch.
It's as if the life you're living almost fits you,
But not quite.
You might think I should be happier than this.
I've done so much therapy.
I understand so much about myself.
But why doesn't it feel right?
Well one core reason is this.
The version of you that is living your current life is not entirely real.
It's not your deepest,
Most authentic self.
It is why I call it the not real self.
The not real self is not fake in a superficial way.
It's not that you are lying or pretending in any simple sense.
The not real self is the version of you that was built out of maybe family expectations,
Maybe cultural norms and roles,
Definitely old emotional ones,
Partly fear of ejection,
Abandonment,
Or loneliness,
And maybe due to some strategies you developed to stay safe,
Loved,
Or even approved.
In other words,
This self is an adaptation.
It learned very early,
If I'm this way,
I will be emotionally safer,
More acceptable,
And cause less trouble.
So you became,
As a result,
The nice one,
The strong one,
The easygoing one,
The competent one,
The always available one.
While this adapted self helped you survive and belong.
But here's the problem,
If the not real self is the only version of you that gets to live,
Your life will always feel slightly off,
Slightly empty,
And absolutely not yours.
Having said that,
Are you really aware of who your not real self is?
Based on my experience,
Most of us don't know.
To address this gap,
The first step of any personal transformation journey starts getting to know this not real self.
Therefore,
You don't need to fix your personality or suddenly try to be your true self overnight.
No,
No,
No,
No,
None of that,
Because you can't change your life that quickly.
You need to be patient as you can't really turn around all those survival mechanisms that you've built your life upon for decades,
For years,
For decades.
So when you take your first step toward your personal transformation and start to become more aware of that not real self,
You'll begin to see it in action and tell yourself,
Ah,
This is the one who has been living my life.
This is how it speaks.
This is how it makes decisions.
This is why it says yes to this and no to that.
But before you can live as your true nature,
As your real self,
You need to see who has been living instead.
So how do you begin to recognize your not real self in real life?
You might notice you feel like you are performing a role instead of just being.
You agree to things that don't feel fully true for you.
You feel anxious or guilty because of a possibility of disappointing others.
You feel tired after certain interactions as if you've been pretending to be someone you are not.
A simple way to start is to ask,
In which situations do I feel least like myself?
Or do I become there with that person?
What role am I playing in this situation?
Just noticing this and reflecting on your experiences help you slowly begin your personal transformation journey.
Okay,
Here's a small practical invitation for this week before we meet again in the next episode.
Choose one area of your life,
Just one area.
Work,
Family,
Friendships,
Or your romantic relationship.
And for one week,
Simply watch.
When do you feel a slight inner tension,
A sense that you are not fully yourself?
And when you notice that,
You don't need to analyze it deeply yet.
Just name it,
Gently.
This is not my real self speaking.
Or this is my not real self making this choice.
No judgment,
No pressure to change it immediately,
Just awareness.
That simple act of seeing clearly is already a powerful movement from automatic living toward conscious living.
That's where I want to stop.
And invite you to reflect on your life and on your not real self.
Thank you for listening and for being honest enough to meet the part of you that has been living your life so far and causing that empty feeling you've been sensing for years.
That honestly is the beginning of everything.
