This meditation practice guides you through meeting your anxiety with compassion rather than resistance.
You'll gently explore where your nervous system learned to protect you.
Acknowledge its intelligence and offer it gratitude and kindness for that protection.
Begin by finding a comfortable position,
Maybe sitting or lying down.
The goal isn't perfect stillness,
But simply to find a position where your body can rest.
Begin by closing your eyes,
Or if it feels more comfortable,
Simply soften your gaze downward.
Begin noticing your breath.
Just as it is.
You don't need to change anything.
Simply noticing.
Notice the natural rhythm of breathing in and breathing out.
Feel and notice the weight of your body being supported.
By the chair.
The floor.
The earth beneath you.
You are held.
You are safe right now.
In this moment.
You're safe.
Everything is okay.
Bring your awareness to your feet.
Or anywhere that your body is connecting to the ground.
Notice the sensation of contact.
Of being anchored to the earth.
Placing one or both of your hands on your heart center.
Feel the warmth of your own touch.
And now taking three intentional breaths.
Breathing in fully and completely.
And breathing out all the way.
With each exhale,
Let your body settle more and more.
Now gently invite in an image or a sense of your younger self.
Bring this image of yourself into your awareness.
You may be a specific age or just a feeling of a younger you.
Don't force the image,
Just notice whatever arises here.
This is the version of you who first learned that the world could feel unsafe.
The you who first felt anxious,
Uncertain,
Or afraid.
And notice what this younger version of you looks like.
What are they wearing?
Where are they?
What expression is on their face?
Without trying to change anything,
Simply acknowledge.
This child learned to be afraid.
This child learned to be anxious.
This child learned to protect themselves the only way they knew how.
Breathe with this awareness in and out.
You And notice if there is any emotion present as you witness this younger self.
Maybe sadness or anger,
Tenderness or grief.
Whatever is here,
Just let it be.
You don't need to fix anything.
Just be with this emotion.
And now begin to speak to this younger version of you,
Silently,
In your mind,
Or even whispered aloud.
I see you.
I see how hard you tried.
I see how scared you were.
I see the impossible situation that you are in.
Breathe here.
Speaking to this younger version of you.
Telling them maybe you did nothing wrong.
You took care of yourself.
You survived.
And that took incredible courage and intelligence.
Breathe here.
Being with any emotions.
And continue speaking to this younger version of you.
Telling them I'm here now.
You're not alone anymore.
And learning to take care of us.
And I'll always be here for you.
I'll never leave you.
And stay with this for a few more breaths.
Let yourself feel whatever arises,
Maybe compassion or grief.
Love or pain,
All of this is welcome here.
Staying with your younger child,
Your younger self.
And then knowing that this connection with your younger self will never leave.
It's always here when you need it.
Allow it to gently fade away for now.
Returning to it anytime you need to.
But now shifting your awareness to your body in this present moment.
And notice where you might be holding tension.
Maybe that practice with your younger child created some tension somewhere in your body,
Your jaw,
Your shoulders,
Maybe your hands or your belly.
These are places where your body still grips,
Still guards,
Still protects.
And rather than trying to relax these areas,
Simply acknowledge them.
Notice that they're there.
Notice that this is my body still trying to keep me safe.
Bring to mind a recent moment when you felt anxious or triggered or overwhelmed.
Without reliving the whole experience,
Just kind of remember the circumstances.
Just touching the edge of the experience.
And notice what your body wanted to do.
Did your heart race?
Did you freeze?
Were you unable to move or speak?
Did you shut down,
Go numb,
Or disconnect?
Without judgment,
Simply acknowledge that is what my nervous system has learned to do.
This is how it protected me.
Breathe into this awareness.
These natural tendencies of the body are simply patterns that we've learned.
This is how our nervous system protected you.
And now place your hand on your heart again.
And begin to speak to your body.
To your nervous system.
Thank you for protecting me.
Thank you for the hypervigilance that scanned for danger.
You were just trying to keep me safe.
Thank you for the anxiety that warned me.
You thought I was in danger and you were trying to help.
Thank you for the freeze response when I couldn't run or fight.
You helped me find another way to survive.
Thank you for the numbness,
The shutting down.
You gave me a break when things were too overwhelming.
Telling your nervous system,
You did your job perfectly.
You kept me alive.
And now let this gratitude settle into your body.
And notice if anything shifts,
Maybe a softening or a warmth or a release.
Or perhaps nothing changes and that's okay too.
Your nervous system has been working so hard for so long.
And it deserves your acknowledgement.
Not your judgment.
Take a deeper breath in now.
And a longer breath out.
And ask yourself gently.
What did that younger version of me need that they didn't get?
Maybe they needed someone to notice their fear.
Maybe they needed to be told they were safe.
Maybe they needed permission to rest,
To cry.
To be imperfect.
Maybe they just needed someone to stay.
Whatever arises,
Don't judge it,
Just notice.
And now imagine that you could offer that to yourself right now.
What would you say?
What would you do?
You might silently offer.
You are safe now.
You can rest.
You are enough exactly as you are.
You don't have to be perfect to be loved.
I'm not going anywhere.
Choose the words that feel true for you.
Or simply rest in the knowing that you are here.
Offering yourself the compassion you always deserved.
Breathe this in and let it reach the parts of you that have been waiting to hear it.
Your anxiety is not your enemy.
It is the part of you that learned to survive.
And now you're learning to give it what it truly needs.
Safety,
Compassion,
And the permission to finally rest.
Begin to deepen your breath.
Gently moving your fingers and toes.
Feel your body here,
Now,
In this moment,
Alive and safe.
And doing its best.
Place your hand on your heart one more time.
And say to yourself,
Thank you body.
Thank you,
Nervous system.
I'm learning to take care of us.
And carry this compassion with you.
Your nervous system is always listening and always learning.
And with each kind word,
Each patient breath,
Each moment of understanding,
You are teaching it something new.
You are safe.
You are worthy.
And you are allowed to heal.
