Welcome to Active Meditation.
A Course in Miracles.
Lesson 6.
I am upset because I see something that is not there.
We prepare for this exercise by placing our body in a comfortable position so that we won't have to move it for several minutes.
We close our eyes.
We take three deep breaths to relax our mind and body.
The out breath longer than the in breath.
And to help relax,
We remove all expression from our face.
Do this now.
Place your body in a comfortable position.
Take three deep breaths and remove all expression from your face.
This is a course in miracles.
It is a required course.
Only the time you take it is voluntary.
Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum.
It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time.
The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love,
For that is beyond what can be taught.
It does aim,
However,
At removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence,
Which is your natural inheritance.
The opposite of love is fear.
But what is all encompassing can have no opposite.
This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way.
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
The exercises with this idea are very similar to the preceding ones.
Again,
It is necessary to name both the form of the upset—anger,
Fear,
Worry,
Depression,
So on—and the perceived source,
Very specifically,
For any application of the idea.
For example,
I am angry at this person because I see something that is not there.
I am worried about this situation because I see something that is not there.
Today's idea is useful for application to anything that seems to upset you and can profitably be used throughout the day for that purpose.
However,
The three or four practice periods which are required should be preceded by a minute or so of mind-searching as before,
And the application of the idea to each upsetting thought uncovered in the search.
Let's practice with the feeling of anger.
First,
Find the source of your anger—a person,
A situation,
Or an event.
I'll wait while you do this.
Say to yourself,
Say in your mind,
I am angry at—I am the source—because I see something that is not there.
Do this now.
Again,
If you resist applying the idea to some upsetting thoughts more than to others,
Remind yourself of the two cautions stated in the previous lesson.
There are no small upsets.
They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind,
And I cannot keep this form of upset and let the others go.
For the purposes of these exercises,
Then,
I will regard them all as the same.
Let's practice again,
This time with the feeling of worry.
First,
Name the cause of the worry.
I'll give you time to do this.
Say to yourself,
Say in your mind,
I am worried about—name the cause—because I see something that is not there.
Do this now.
Say in your mind,
Say in your mind,
I am angry at—I am the source—because I see something that is not there.
Let the others go,
And for the purposes of these exercises,
Then,
I will regard them all as the same.
Practice on your own.
Search your mind for the feeling that is upsetting you.
Do this now.
Search your mind for the source of the upset.
Say to yourself,
Say to your mind,
I am—describe the upset—I am upset at—locate the source—I am upset at the source—because I see something that is not there.
Practice this now with your defined upset and your located source.
I am upset because I see something that is not there.
There are no small upsets.
They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind.
I cannot keep this form of upset and let the others go.
For the purposes of these exercises,
Then,
I will regard them all as the same.
I am upset because I see something that is not there.
Let's return to our regular waking state of thoughts,
Feelings,
And actions,
To time and space.
And as we do this,
We know that our personality has made progress in developing a working relationship with our higher self,
The conscious presence.
Take a few deep breaths to help establish the waking state.
And return,
Fully alert,
Comfortable in all instruments of awareness,
With a heightened awareness of our environment and the knowledge,
I am aware.
I am.
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.
