Hi,
This is Aidan,
And welcome.
If you're listening to this,
There's a good chance your body is tired,
But your mind hasn't quite got the message yet.
You may have noticed that the harder you try to sleep,
The more awake you feel.
The more you monitor,
The more you try,
The more alert your system becomes.
So tonight,
We're not going to try to fall asleep.
There's nothing here you need to achieve.
Nothing you need to switch off.
Nothing you need to make happen.
Instead,
This is a practice of not trying.
Of letting go of the struggle with sleep,
And allowing rest to unfold in its own way.
You're welcome to fall asleep at any point,
And you're also welcome to stay awake.
Both are completely fine.
For now,
Just make yourself as comfortable as you can,
And let this be a place where nothing is required of you.
Before we go any further,
It's important to be very clear about something.
You do not need to relax.
You do not need to empty your mind.
You do not need to feel calm.
And you do not need to fall asleep.
There is no right way for this to go.
If your thoughts continue,
That's okay.
If your body feels restless,
That's okay.
If you notice impatience,
Boredom,
Or frustration,
That's okay too.
Nothing here is a test.
Nothing is being measured.
Nothing is being optimized.
Tonight isn't about fixing your sleep.
It's about stepping out of the effort to control it.
You might even notice a part of you listening carefully,
Checking whether this is working.
If you notice that,
See if you can just let that be there as well.
You don't need to convince yourself of anything.
You don't need to believe any particular idea.
All you're doing here is allowing yourself to rest without an agenda.
And if you remain awake for the entire time,
That simply means you've spent this time resting quietly.
That,
By itself,
Is already enough.
Now,
Without trying to change anything,
Begin to notice the points of contact between your body and whatever is supporting you.
The weight of your body against the bed.
The pressure of the mattress beneath you.
The way your head is supported.
Your arms.
Your legs.
There's no need to soften or relax anything on purpose.
Just noticing what's already there.
You may notice areas of heaviness,
Or lightness,
Or warmth,
Or coolness.
You might notice nothing in particular at all.
All of that is fine.
Now,
Bring a gentle awareness to the movement of your breathing.
Not controlling it.
Not shaping it.
Just noticing that the breathing is happening.
The breath moves in.
And the breath moves out.
Sometimes shallow.
Sometimes deeper.
Sometimes steady.
Sometimes uneven.
There's no need to follow it closely.
Just let it be part of the background.
If your attention wanders,
That's not a problem.
When you notice it has wandered,
That noticing is already awareness returning.
Nothing to correct.
You might also notice small movements in the body.
A swallow.
A shift.
A subtle adjustment.
Let the body do whatever it needs to do.
To find its own comfort.
You don't need to help it.
Now,
I'd like to invite you to try something a little different.
For the next while,
Instead of trying to sleep,
See what it's like to allow yourself to stay awake.
Not alert.
Not stimulated.
Just awake.
And resting.
You could think of this as a very gentle game.
A game with no rules,
No goal,
And no way to get it wrong.
The only thing you're doing is noticing what it's like to rest without trying to sleep.
If you fall asleep,
You haven't failed.
You've just stopped playing.
There's a big difference between being awake and tense,
And being awake and at ease.
You don't need to keep yourself awake.
You don't need to resist sleep.
If sleep comes,
It comes.
If it doesn't,
That's okay too.
Simply allow yourself to rest comfortably in wakefulness.
You may notice the mind offering thoughts like,
I should be asleep by now.
Or,
What if this doesn't work?
Those are very familiar night time thoughts.
You don't need to answer them.
You don't need to argue with them.
Just let them pass through,
Like background noise.
Nothing you think tonight needs to be solved.
Nothing needs to be decided.
You're not here to prepare for tomorrow.
You're not here to review today.
You're just here resting.
And paradoxically,
When the pressure to sleep drops away,
The system often settles on its own.
But again,
That's not something you need to aim for.
Just notice what it's like to give yourself permission to be awake without effort.
As you continue resting,
You may become aware of thoughts drifting through the mind.
Images,
Words,
Snippets of conversations,
Plans,
Memories.
Rather than getting involved with them,
See if you can notice them as mental events.
They appear.
They linger.
You don't need to push them away.
And you don't need to follow them.
Thoughts at night don't mean something is wrong.
The brain often becomes more active when the world grows quiet.
This is normal.
This is human.
You might imagine your thoughts as clouds moving across a wide sky,
Or leaves floating along a stream.
You're not trying to stop the movement.
You're just noticing it.
And underneath all of that movement,
There's an awareness.
That awareness doesn't need to hurry.
It doesn't need to fix anything.
It simply notices.
Even if the mind stays busy,
Awareness can remain at ease.
You can be awake and still resting deeply.
If you notice frustration or impatience,
See if that too can be included.
Nothing needs to be excluded from this moment.
It might help to remember that sleep is not something you do.
It's something that happens when the conditions are right.
And one of the most important conditions is the absence of effort.
Many people with sleep difficulties aren't bad sleepers.
They're simply trying too hard.
Tonight,
You're practicing not trying.
Letting the body decide what it needs.
Letting the mind wander if it wants to,
Or settle if it's ready.
There's no need to check the time.
No need to estimate how long this has been going.
You don't need to notice whether you're closer to sleep or further away.
All of that monitoring can rest too.
Right now,
Resting is enough.
From here,
There's less for you to do and less for me to say.
You can continue resting exactly as you are.
Breathing,
Listening,
Or drifting.
Nothing to achieve.
Nowhere to go.
Thoughts can come and go.
Sensations can shift and change.
And you can remain at ease with whatever is present.
If sleep arrives,
It can arrive gently.
If it doesn't,
You're still resting.
Nothing needs to change.
Just resting as you are.
No effort.
No urgency.
Just rest.
And whatever happens next is perfectly okay.
