Doing household chores but mentally replaying a conversation from last week.
You are on a call but already planning tomorrow's schedule in your head.
You're scrolling,
But you can't remember the last three posts that you saw.
It's not that you zoned out.
Your mind wandered away without checking with you.
I'm a psychologist from India and let's understand the psychology behind it.
Our mind also has a background app.
It's the brain's built-in system called the default mode network.
It switches itself on when you are doing something familiar or repetitive.
It loves drifting into past memories.
Half worries,
Random storytelling,
And future planning.
Kind of mental autopilot.
Your brain's energy-saving mode.
Mind wandering isn't a problem.
Brain is supposed to wander.
The issue is when you don't notice it wandering for minutes or for hours.
Moment you realize,
Oh,
I was not in the moment.
I was not here,
But now I am.
That is awareness.
That's mindfulness.
Now,
How do we bring that awareness?
In an autopilot mode.
Here's the tip.
Do the gentle awareness check.
Ask yourself,
Where is my mind right now?
Do not blame the wandering.
Do not force focus.
Just try to notice.
This single question brings back your brain from unhealthy autopilot to gentle awareness.
When you notice the drift,
Your brain pauses.
Your breath deepens.
Your shoulders drop.
Your attention returns.
Your thinking becomes clear.
You re-enter the moment that you were doing,
Rather than being in a dreamy land.
Your awareness is the reset.
Does awareness start benefiting immediately?
No.
With practice,
You learn to catch the spiral sooner and less time in mental fog.
More present during conversations,
Feel more connected to what you are doing.
The trick is not to hold the mind still.
You just have to notice when it's leaving and you have to gently bring it back.
