The Two Monks A senior monk and a junior monk were travelling together through the countryside.
As they journeyed,
They came upon a wide river with strong current.
The monks prepared to cross,
But before they could,
They noticed a very young and beautiful woman standing by the riverbank,
Looking distressed.
The woman asked,
Would you be so kind as to help me cross the river?
The monks paused for a moment.
Having taken vows not to touch a woman,
They exchanged a brief glance.
Then the senior monk,
Without a word,
Gently lifted the woman,
Carried her across the river and set her down on the other side.
He then silently continued his journey.
The younger monk,
Though surprised,
Said nothing and followed his teacher.
As they walked on,
An hour passed without a word between them.
Then two hours.
Then three hours.
And still,
The younger monk was in deep thought,
Struggling to understand.
Finally,
Unable to hold back any longer,
The younger monk blurted out,
Master,
We monks are not permitted to touch a woman.
How could you then carry that woman on your shoulders?
The older monk,
Looking at him with calm expression,
Replied,
Brother,
I set her down on the other side of the river.
Why are you still carrying her?
