The serenity is one of the prayers that supported me through my 12-step journey and I wanted to share it with you. For adaptability, I left out the usual "God" at the beginning so you can fill in whatever fits for you. The serenity prayer originated with Reinhold Niebuhr in the 1940s and has since then been taken up in 12-step programs all over the world. This version is a little different from the original and stems from ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families). The ending prayer is the beautiful prayer from Sister Marcina Wiederkehr.

Hello.

The original serenity prayer starts with the word God.

However,

In this version,

I will not name the addressee,

As this can be a very personal choice.

Options can be God,

Goddess,

Higher Power,

The Universe,

Great Spirit,

Mother Nature,

Or the Great Outdoors,

Or whatever feels right to you.

If none of these resonate,

Just let it be open and pray with me.

We'll start with the serenity prayer five times in a row and end with the beautiful prayer.

Take a deep inhale.

Open your mouth completely.

Exhale.

Exhale.

Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change,

The courage to change the one I can,

And the wisdom to know that one is me.

Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change,

The courage to change the one I can,

And the wisdom to know that one is me.

Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change,

The courage to change the one I can,

And the wisdom to know that one is me.

Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change,

The courage to change the one I can,

And the wisdom to know that one is me.

Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change,

I cannot change,

The courage to change the one I can,

And the wisdom to know that one is me.

Help me believe the truth about myself,

No matter how beautiful it is.

Take a deep inhale.

Exhale.

Open your mouth completely.

Exhale.

Thank you for praying with me and taking action to come back to self.
