Welcome to Roots,
Grounding into the earth meditation.
Find a comfortable seated position if you can.
Feet flat on the floor.
Hands resting gently on your thighs.
If sitting is not possible,
Lying down is perfectly fine.
Allow your eyes to close.
And take a breath in.
And a slow breath out.
I want to begin by inviting you to feel the surface beneath you.
If you are seated,
Feel your feet on the floor,
The full surface of your soles making contact with the ground.
Feel your weight in your chair.
The back of your thighs,
Your sitting bones.
If you are lying down,
Feel the full length of your body being held.
The surface beneath your heels,
Your calves,
The back of your thighs,
Your lower back.
Your shoulders,
The back of your hips.
Just notice the support that is already there,
Already holding you.
You don't need to do anything to receive it.
It is simply there.
This is what grounding is,
Not something you have to create,
Just something you have to notice.
The Earth beneath you,
Always there,
Always holding.
Take a breath in.
And as you breathe out,
Feel yourself settle a little more heavily into the surface beneath you.
And again,
Breathe in.
And breathe out,
Letting go a little more,
A little heavier.
A little more surrendered.
With each out-breath,
Let gravity do its work.
You don't need to hold yourself upright now.
You don't need to hold anything.
Just let the earth receive you.
Now I want you to use your imagination.
Picture the soles of your feet.
Or the base of your body if you're lying down.
And imagine from this point roots begin to grow.
Gentle,
Strong,
Living roots extending down through the floor,
Down through whatever is beneath you,
Down through the layers of the earth and the soil and rock,
Deeper and deeper into the ground.
These are your roots.
They are yours.
They go as deep as you need them to.
Feel them extending downward now.
Finding their way through the cool dark earth.
Growing longer with every breath you take.
And as they go deeper,
Feel yourself becoming more anchored,
More steady,
More held.
Not rigid.
A tree in the wind is not rigid,
It moves,
It bends,
It sways,
But it does not fall.
Because its roots go deep.
You are like that tree,
Whatever is happening above the surface,
You have roots that go deeper than anything life can throw at you.
Now feel the earth beneath you beginning to respond to your roots.
The earth is warm and dark and rich.
It has been here long before you.
It will be here long after.
And right now,
It is holding you.
Feel the earth's energy beginning to move up throughout your roots,
Slowly,
Steadily,
Like water rising through the roots of a tree.
This energy is nourishing,
Stabilizing.
It's ancient.
Feel it moving through the soles of your feet,
Up through your ankles,
Your calves,
Your knees.
Slow and steady.
Up through your thighs,
Into your hips,
Your pelvis.
The base of your spine.
Feel this warm grounding energy settling in the lower half of your body.
Feel how heavy and held and safe that feels.
Continuing upward now.
Through your belly,
Your stomach.
Your lower back.
Any tension here?
Just let it dissolve into this rising warmth.
Let it be carried away,
Down through the roots,
Back into the earth.
Up through your chest,
Your heart space,
Your upper back.
Feel your chest soften as this grounding energy moves through it.
Feel your heart settle.
Through your shoulders,
Down your arms,
To your hands and fingertips.
Up through your neck,
Your jaw,
Your face,
The top of your head.
Your whole body now,
Filled with this warm,
Steady grounding energy.
From the roots in the earth below,
All the way to the crown of your head above.
Rest here for a moment,
Rooted and present,
Held and nourished.
Feel the steadiness of it,
The simplicity of it.
You are connected to the earth beneath you,
To your own body,
To this present moment.
There is nowhere to go,
Nothing to do,
Nothing to fix or change or manage.
Just this.
Just now.
Just you.
Rooted and present.
Feel your feet on the floor.
Your body if you're lying down.
Take a breath.
And remember your roots.
Roots going down,
Earth coming up.
That is enough to come back to yourself.
Your roots don't disappear when you open your eyes,
They stay with you,
Wherever you go.
The Earth is always beneath you,
Always holding,
Always steady.
And so are you,
Beneath everything.
You are steady too.
Begin to come back now gently.
Take a deeper breath in.
And let it go.
Feel the surface beneath you.
The sounds around you.
Gently move your fingers,
Your toes,
Perhaps a little gentle stretch.
Just listen to what your body needs right now.
And when you are ready,
Open your eyes.
