Welcome.

Thank you for joining me today.

Truth be told,

I couldn't decide if I wanted to create an Amorphati-based meditation or a talk on the same subject.

What I decided I actually wanted to achieve was to put this concept,

This idea of Amorphati,

Into a verbal medium in such a way that you can download or install this principle into your way of being,

Into your consciousness.

The difficulty with a talk is that we can often engage with an idea intellectually but still fail to incorporate it into how we show up in the world.

And then in the strictest sense,

This isn't a meditation either.

So let's go on this journey together and as always,

I really appreciate any feedback you might be willing to give.

So first,

I'll speak briefly as to why I think it's worth incorporating the principle of Amorphati into our awareness and the way in which we navigate the world.

And then if you're appropriately convinced that it's in your interest to do so,

We'll drop together into a more meditative space to begin conditioning ourselves to align with this principle in our lives.

I fully intend to listen to this track myself a number of times because I really love this idea of almost downloading wisdom directly into my awareness and way of being.

So,

What is Amorphati?

Amorphati is a Latin phrase that translates to love of fate or the love of one's fate.

As a concept,

It's most famously associated with the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche,

Although its roots can be traced back to Stoic philosophy,

The core concept being introduced by the likes of Epictetus almost 2,

000 years earlier.

You could say the principle of Amorphati developed from the Stoic's core teaching of the dichotomy of control.

The dichotomy of control refers to acknowledging and accepting what is within our control and what is not.

The key point is that while we can't always control what happens in the external world,

We always have the power to choose how we respond and the perspective we choose to take.

But Amorphati goes beyond acceptance.

The person who has integrated the Amorphati principle not only accepts what they can't control but actually chooses to lean in and embrace it.

I'll restate this point because it's important.

The idea behind Amorphati is the acceptance and even the embracing of all that happens in life,

Whether good or bad.

It involves seeing every experience,

Challenge and outcome as necessary and valuable rather than resisting or regretting them.

It's simplification perhaps but I like to see it almost as behaving as if you'd explicitly chosen whatever happens.

Some people believe that actually all of the experiences in your life have been curated by some higher power for the journey of your own growth and development,

Whether that's your higher self or the will of God.

But my point is that whether you believe that or not doesn't necessarily matter.

It remains an enormously empowering stance to take.

The psychological sleight of hand here is that you can't dictate what happens in life but you can align yourself with the view that whatever happens is exactly what you wanted.

It's strange because it's almost childish and at the same time there's a deep wisdom to this.

I'll illustrate what I mean with a simple example.

Let's say I rock up to a shop and I want to get a strawberry flavoured drink.

I say to the shopkeeper that I'd like to buy a strawberry drink and the shopkeeper says look mate sorry we've only got peach left.

I turn right around and say yeah actually you know what I think I really fancy having a peach drink today if you've got any of that yeah peach is exactly what I want.

This is obviously a very silly example but it still transmits the idea of being committed to embracing what is no matter how it turns out.

It's perhaps more useful to look at examples where it's much harder to embrace the occurrences of one's life.

What if your partner cheated on you for example?

The amor fatius turns right around and says well this event was always meant to be part of the journey of my life.

Though painful this event has put me in touch with my heart and taught me lots about human nature,

Love,

Trust,

Acceptance and the nature and value of fidelity.

This experience has taught me that my partner isn't the person that I thought they were.

So even though this really sucks right now I choose to embrace this experience as part of what has shaped who I am and ultimately I wouldn't have had it any other way.

In practical terms amor fati encourages a mindset where we not only accept the inevitable but learn to love it because it is a part of our journey.

This philosophy teaches that every event is an opportunity for growth and that even hardship can be meaningful.

Nietzsche saw this as an essential part of cultivating resilience and joy in life believing that through embracing one's fate wholeheartedly one could live more fully and authentically.

So to recap the key ideas behind amor fati quickly.

One,

Acceptance.

Letting go of resistance to what is and instead finding value in every experience.

Two,

Reframing adversity.

So to viewing challenges not as misfortunes but as part of life's natural process.

And finally or thirdly embracing change.

Loving life as it unfolds not as we wish it would be.

The amor fati principle is often linked to the idea of eternal recurrence where Nietzsche asked us to imagine living our lives repeatedly exactly as they are and to find peace and even joy in that idea.

Amor fati is about conscious choice to affirm life with all of its imperfections.

So I hope I've conveyed the potentially enormous value this principle can have in your life if you can embrace it wholeheartedly and imbue it into your conscious awareness.

So now let's enter into a meditative space,

A state where we can condition ourselves to align with amor fati and move toward loving our own destiny whatever it may turn out to be.

Begin by finding a comfortable seated position and gently allow your mind to quiet and your body to soften keeping your spine erect.

Close your eyes gently and take a few deep cleansing breaths.

Inhale deeply through your nose letting your lungs fill completely and then exhale slowly through the mouth releasing any tension in your body.

Feel your body rooted in the present moment.

Feel the contact between your body and the surface beneath you.

Let yourself settle into this space knowing that for the next few minutes there is nowhere else you need to be.

This time is for you.

This time is for you.

Now bring your awareness to the breath gently breathing in and out allowing the rhythm of your breathing to settle into a natural peaceful flow.

With each breath invite yourself to release any thoughts or worries from the day.

Imagine each exhale as a wave washing away the mental clutter leaving behind stillness and clarity.

As you rest in this quiet space I invite you to bring into your awareness the idea of amor fati,

The love of one's fate.

Imagine this concept like a gentle breeze slowly moving through your mind your heart and your body.

There's no need to force it just allow the thought to be present with you.

Now consider an experience in your life that has been challenging or uncomfortable,

Something that might have caused you pain or resistance.

Bring that situation gently into your awareness but from a place of observation.

No judgment,

No stories,

Just see it for what it is as if you're viewing it from a distance.

Notice any feelings or sensations in the body as this experience comes to mind.

Maybe there's comes to mind.

Maybe there's tightness or tension somewhere.

Maybe there's a sense of unease.

That's okay,

Just acknowledge whatever arises.

This is part of the journey of amor fati,

The embracing of all that is without resistance.

Now on your next inhale say to yourself silently,

I accept this.

Let the words move through you as you breathe in.

On the exhale release any resistance saying quietly within,

This too is part of my path.

Repeat this for a few breaths.

Inhale with acceptance,

Exhale with surrender.

Now we're going to deepen this idea even further.

On your next inhale instead of just accepting,

Silently say,

I love this.

Imagine that even this challenging event was something on some level that you chose.

Inhale,

I love this.

And as you exhale,

Feel a sense of embracing as if you're welcoming this experience as an essential part of your growth,

Of your story.

Exhale,

This is shaping me.

Let these breaths and thoughts move through you for a few more cycles.

Inhale,

I love this and exhale,

This is shaping me.

Notice how this small shift in perspective feels in your body.

What happens when you move from mere acceptance to love?

Maybe it feels expansive,

Maybe it's still difficult.

Both are completely okay.

You're simply conditioning your awareness,

Opening yourself to the possibility of love.

Loving all aspects of your life just as they are.

Now I invite you to extend this love and acceptance beyond individual experiences and directed towards yourself.

On your next inhale silently say,

I love myself.

As you exhale say within,

Whoever I may turn out to be.

Let's rest here for a few breaths,

Inhaling love for yourself and exhaling any need for perfection.

Inhale,

I love myself.

Exhale,

Whoever I may turn out to be.

Now gently bring your awareness to your life as a whole,

Your relationships,

Your work,

Your personal journey.

Consider the entirety of your path with its triumphs and challenges,

Its joys and its heartaches.

On the next inhale say to yourself,

Though it may not be perfect,

I love and embrace the life that I have.

And exhale with a deep sense of surrender as if you are fully embracing all of the twists and turns of your unique journey.

Let's repeat this a few times.

Inhale,

I love and embrace the life that I have.

Exhale,

I surrender to its imperfections.

It's on the inhale,

I love and embrace the life that I have.

And on the exhale,

I surrender to its imperfections.

Now allow this sense of love to extend even further to the unknown future.

Imagine the unfolding of your destiny,

The path ahead,

With all of its uncertainties and surprises.

And on your next breath,

Inhale with the thought,

I love my destiny.

And exhale,

Whatever it may turn out to be.

Feel how this declaration moves through you,

You're opening your heart and mind to the unknown,

Embracing your future with love and trust,

Regardless of what may come.

Inhale,

I love my destiny.

Exhale,

Whatever it may turn out to be.

That's on the inhale,

I love my destiny.

And on the exhale,

Whatever it may turn out to be.

Let these words flow with your breath for a few more moments until they feel like a deep,

Embodied truth.

You're embracing the fullness of life,

Loving yourself,

Your path,

And your destiny,

Just as they are.

I love my destiny.

Just as they are.

I love my destiny.

Whatever it may turn out to be.

Now release the specific phrases and come back to the gentle rhythm of your breath.

Simply breathe in and out,

Resting in the quiet,

Peaceful space you've created.

You may notice that your body feels lighter or your mind perhaps a little clearer.

This is the practice of Ammuvathati,

The conscious choice to love what is,

Knowing that every experience,

Every challenge,

Every twist in the road is part of the unique story of your life.

As we begin to close,

Take a moment to feel gratitude for this time.

Gratitude for your ability to sit with these ideas,

To reflect,

And to open yourself to this new way of being.

And then in your own time,

When you're ready,

Slowly bring your awareness back to the room.

Wiggle your fingers,

Wiggle your toes,

Gently stretch your body in any way it would like to be stretched.

And when you're ready,

Open your eyes.

Take this moment to commit silently to yourself,

To carry this principle with you in the days ahead.

Remember,

Ammuvathati is not just an idea,

It's a way of being,

A path to deeper peace,

Resilience,

And joy in life.

Thank you for being here with me today.

Have a lovely rest of your day.

Thank you for this! I think I would have struggled with the concept of Amor Fati before my heart failure, but now that life is a bonus it fits perfectly. I also appreciate your sense of humor! I often hear you laugh or smile while talking with us. Looking forward to more talks and meditations from you
