In the classic and highly recommended relationship book, Getting the Love You Want, The authors liken the space between you and another person to a river. From this river, both people drink, and both people bathe, and so the goal is to keep the river as clean and pure as possible. You do this by holding your partner with kindness in your heart. You do this by being intentional with your language, tone, listening, and thoughtful questions. Every time you blame, criticize, react, or withdraw, you dump toxins into the river. When the river gets toxic, it’s no longer safe to bathe in and drink from. The relationship becomes a place of harm rather than one of nourishment. If you want love worth having, it’s up to you to do your part to keep the river clean. Listen to these affirmations to honor the space between.

Honoring the Space Between Affirmations Repeat each affirmation out loud or inwardly.

I create room for both intimacy and autonomy.

Cherishing the harmony between them.

I honor the ebb and flow of space in relationships,

Nurturing a balanced and fulfilling connection.

Healthy space fosters a deeper appreciation and understanding of each other's needs.

I choose to keep the space clean,

As the river we both bathe in and drink from.

I hold the space between us with an energy of trust and appreciation.

I prioritize quality connection time and hold my loved ones with sweetness in my heart when we are apart.

Giving the benefit of the doubt comes naturally to me.

If I'm curious about someone's intentions,

I will ask instead of assume.

In my spaciousness,

I can meet myself right where I am.

In my spaciousness,

I can meet others right where they are.

I am no longer ruled by fear of loss and rejection and have a trusting relationship with space.

I am open.

I am available.

I am spacious.
