Hi,
My name is Laura Patrick.
I'm a licensed clinical social worker.
Today's meditation.
Is stepping out of overthinking.
Find a comfortable position.
Allow your body to become still.
Take a slow breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
If your mind has been busy today.
You don't need to make it stop.
You don't need to force your thoughts away.
Instead,
You're going to practice letting your thoughts be thoughts.
Take another slow breath in.
Imagine that you are sitting beside a gently flowing stream.
Leaves are floating slowly along the surface of the water.
And when a thought comes into your mind,
Imagine placing that thought on one of those leaves.
You don't have to decide whether the thought is good or bad.
You don't have to solve it.
Just place it on the leaf.
Watch the water carry it downstream.
Another thought appears.
Place that on another leaf.
Let it move along too.
Maybe your mind says,
But I need to figure this out.
That's okay.
Put that thought on a leaf too.
Maybe your mind begins replaying a conversation.
Put the conversation on a leaf.
Maybe it jumps ahead and starts imagining what could happen tomorrow.
Placed tomorrow on another leaf.
You aren't trying to get rid of your thoughts.
You're practicing not chasing every one of them.
Take a slow breath in.
And breathe out.
Feel your body sitting here.
Notice the surface beneath you.
Notice your feet.
Notice your hands.
Your thoughts may be somewhere else,
But your body is here.
Come back to this moment.
Ask yourself quietly.
Is there anything I actually need to do about this thought right now?
If the answer is no,
Allow yourself to leave it for later.
You don't have to solve tomorrow,
Tonight.
You don't have to replay yesterday until you find a different ending.
Right now,
You can simply be here.
Watch another leaf float down the stream.
And another.
Thoughts may continue and you can let them continue without following everyone.
Take one final slow breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
Notice your surroundings again.
Feel your feet.
Maybe your fingers and toes.
And when you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
You don't have to believe,
Answer,
Or solve every thought that passes through your mind.
