Welcome,
I'm Laura Patrick,
Licensed Specialist,
Clinical Social Worker.
Find a comfortable position and allow your body to settle.
Take a slow breath in through your nose.
And gently breathe out.
Again,
Breathe in slowly.
And release.
Sometimes after something painful happens,
We begin to believe feeling bad is necessary.
As if continuing to hurt proves we're sorry,
Or punishment will somehow change the past.
Imagine holding a rope tightly.
At the other end is something from your past.
You've been pulling against it.
Trying to change it.
Arguing with it.
Punishing yourself because of it.
Feel how exhausting it is.
Now loosen your hands.
Say my suffering does not change what happened.
Punishing myself does not repair the past.
I can care deeply about what happened.
Without hurting myself forever.
Open your hands completely.
Let the rope fall.
You are not saying the past didn't matter.
You are saying,
I don't have to keep hurting myself because it mattered.
Repeat,
I choose learning instead of punishment.
I choose compassion instead of condemnation.
And I give myself permission to move forward.
Imagine taking one step away.
And then another.
Past remains behind you.
You can carry the lesson.
But you don't have to drag the punishment behind you.
You are allowed to learn from your past without sentencing yourself to live there.
