Hello and welcome back or welcome for the very first time.
I'm glad you're here and I'm glad you're outside.
That combination of fresh air,
Movements and a few minutes of intentional attention is honestly one of the most underrated well-being tools available to us.
I want to let you know that these sessions are intentionally designed without music and instead feature soft nature sounds in the background.
However,
If you are out in nature,
Maybe you set your headphones to allow some of the sounds around you in.
If you are not walking already,
Go ahead and begin.
Take a breath in right now,
Through your nose if you can and don't judge it,
Don't check if it's deep enough or slow enough.
Just notice the simple act of breathing,
Air arriving and releasing.
Walk for a moment while you settle.
Nothing to do yet,
Just move and breathe.
Today,
We're going to pay attention to something we almost never think about.
Not the sky,
Not the view,
Not the people around us,
But the air itself.
The air as a living,
Present,
Constantly moving thing.
The air you're moving through right now and that is simultaneously moving through us.
Here's a fact that I find mind-blowing every time I think about it.
We breathe approximately 20,
000 times a day.
20,
000 and almost never in any of those breaths do we actually feel it happening.
Today,
For these 15 minutes,
We're going to change that.
This is a practice of the forgotten senses,
Not sight,
We lean on that one constantly.
Today,
We're going to notice temperature,
Touch and smell.
The quieter ones,
The ones that live just beneath the surface.
Begin with temperature.
As you breathe in through your nose,
Notice the temperature of the air as it enters,
Right at the edge of your nostrils.
Is it cool?
Crisp?
Mild and soft?
Now follow it inward.
Feel that slight chill at the top of the inhale and then notice how it warms as it travels deeper.
Your body is tempering the world before it lets it in.
Now feel temperature on your skin.
Your face,
The backs of your hands if they're exposed.
What is the air actually doing to you right now?
Is there a breeze and if so,
From which direction?
Your skin is a remarkably sensitive instrument.
We just all get too busy,
Spend too much time covered up or indoors to use it properly.
Now gently shift to see if you can notice any scent.
This one might take a little more focus and softening.
Smells are less tangible and cannot be grabbed.
You have to allow it to arrive.
What's present right now?
Earth?
Rain on warm concrete?
Grass?
The particular combination of exhaust fumes and coffee and something you can't quite name that belongs only to the street,
To this moment?
Try not to sort it into pleasant and unpleasant.
Just notice what's actually there.
Did you know that our sense of smell has a direct neural connection to the part of the brain that holds memory and emotion?
It bypasses the rational mind almost entirely.
A scent can transport you somewhere in less than a second.
As you walk and breathe,
Something might arrive.
A memory,
A feeling,
Something half familiar.
Let it come and then let it pass.
You're not trying to hold on to anything today.
Now listen to the air.
Every sound reaching you right now is travelling through it.
Vibrations moving from their source to your ear,
Carried by the same air you're breathing in and out.
Maybe in the background you hear birds,
Traffic,
Voices,
The rustle of leaves.
The entire soundscape of this moment.
Allow yourself to notice it as you continue to walk for the next few minutes.
There's something quietly extraordinary about all this.
The air you're breathing right now has been breathed before by every living thing that has existed in this atmosphere.
It has crossed continents and oceans.
It has been inside ancient forests,
Inside creatures we'll never see.
And right now,
In this moment,
It is inside you.
You are not moving through a passive,
Inert world.
You are in constant living exchange with it.
Every single breath is the evidence.
In these last moments of the practice,
Just breathe as you walk,
Consciously and gratefully,
In and out.
As we close,
Take one breath that you really commit to.
Fill your lungs fully.
Hold it for just a beat at the top.
And then let it all go.
The air doesn't run out.
It doesn't get tired.
It doesn't ask you to earn it or deserve it.
It just keeps arriving.
For the rest of your walk,
You don't need to track or analyze anything.
But if at any point the day starts to feel heavy or overwhelming,
Take a real breath,
A deep one.
Notice the temperature of it.
And let it remind you that you are here,
Alive,
Connected,
And never as isolated as stress would have you believe.
Walk well,
And maybe I will see you back here tomorrow.
