Hello,
I'm Kate.
In this video,
I want to explain something that's often misunderstood.
The difference between being sleep deprived and experiencing sleep that simply doesn't restore you.
This video is for anyone who's wondered why they still feel exhausted no matter how many hours they sleep.
Sleep deprivation is the kind of tiredness most advice is built around.
It means you haven't had enough hours of sleep.
And the solution,
At least in theory,
Is straightforward.
Get more of it.
Unrefreshing sleep,
Though,
Is a different experience altogether.
This is when someone sleeps a reasonable number of hours,
Sometimes even a full night,
And still wakes feeling as though they haven't rested at all.
The usual advice to sleep more doesn't address this.
Because the issue isn't the quantity of sleep,
It's that the sleep itself isn't doing the restorative work it's supposed to do.
This distinction matters because the two experiences are often treated as the same thing.
Leading people to try solutions that were never going to help.
Someone with unrefreshing sleep who keeps being told to simply rest more.
Can end up feeling unheard or assuming something is wrong with their effort or discipline.
When in fact the issue is something else entirely.
There are many possible reasons sleep might stop being restorative.
Including chronic stress.
Nervous system dysregulation,
And a range of underlying health conditions.
What's useful to know simply as a starting point is that this distinction exists.
And that needing more than rest to address it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you.
If unrefreshing sleep is something you experience persistently,
It's always worth speaking with a medical professional.
To explore what might be driving it.
This video is offered as a way of naming and understanding the experience.
Not as a substitute for that conversation.
If this has helped clarify the difference between sleep deprivation and unrefreshing sleep.
Thank you for spending these few minutes with me.
I'd love for you to come back and explore more on this topic with me when you're ready.
