Welcome,

I'm Jocelyn.

I like to speak of myself as a cultivator of curiosity and creativity in the human experiment and I run a lot of lives here on Insight Timer around creativity,

Creative expression,

Channeling through creative expression and how to get curious alongside some of the yoga nidras that I offer.

And I wanted to put together a track to remember your creativity.

So what might make me qualified to speak on creativity just aside from the fact that I'm a human and creativity is a birthright of being human and I don't think you need any kind of degree to speak toward creativity and curiosity but I have spent most of my life in the creative fields.

I was an expressive art therapist intermodal which means I worked in all of the arts for decades.

I've been a homeschooling,

Unschooling mom at a three children and running creativity co-ops for other homeschool children.

I am a certified soul art guide.

I was a dancer and I went to school for musical theater.

I was a spoken word poet.

I have used creative expression in many different ways throughout my life and what I've come to understand is that it's the expression itself that's healing.

It's the creative expression itself that is healing in life.

So with all that said we are all creative.

Every one of us.

Every last one of us.

Each and every one of us we are creative.

We are all creative.

We are born creative.

It is a birthright of each of ours to be creative and somewhere along the line in growing up we have developed different ways of seeing ourselves as not creative.

We have been conditioned by schools and family and friends and generations and work and community and you name it.

We've been conditioned to believe many different things about our own creativity.

We've even been conditioned to believe that creativity is something that gets put in specific boxes as opposed to the fact that creativity is just part of being human and infuses most of what we do if not all.

So we've really been conditioned to believe that either we are creative but it's for a certain part of our life and in that creativity that we have we need to be paid or we need to not be paid whatever our belief system is.

Or we begin to believe we're not creative and haven't taken the classes so we don't understand it or we will never be an artist or a writer.

We've kind of taken that idea of creativity and placed it in the arts.

So this track is really about opening up your view of creativity.

You know most of the things we do are creative acts.

Beautiful,

Amazing,

Creative acts.

And whenever I speak to creativity one of the first things I mention that is one of the most creative acts that we can take part in that most everybody has experienced is conversation.

Conversation.

Talking back and forth with someone.

It is a creative act.

We are using so much especially those conversations where all of a sudden you're talking about all kinds of things you didn't anticipate or expect.

Maybe time begins to move really fast and all of a sudden you're like oh I've got to go I've got to go pick up my kids right?

In those moments we are channeling our soul or higher self or a highest aligned energy.

We are using our creativity to express but also to experience.

Very creative moment conversations.

The way you organize is using your creativity.

The way you organize.

The way you place things around your house.

The way you cook.

The way you garden.

The way you parent.

These are all creative endeavors in our lives and we all use creativity in a different way.

We use in our own unique way.

When we write in a journal yes that's creativity.

When we play with our children that's creativity.

When we put the music on and just dance in our own private space that's creativity.

When we take a walk and we allow our mind to wander as the right left right left right left of walking brings us further down the path.

That is creativity.

I just want you to try to wrap your mind around all the ways that you are creative in your life and when you think about creativity you can think about the ways that you're creative in an artistic way.

Like maybe you do sketch or maybe you do write or maybe you do doodle or maybe you do garden and you consider that creative right off the bat right?

Think of it that way but also think of the ways that you are tapping into your own creativity on a daily basis.

Just take a minute and you can even pause this track for a minute as you move through your day and think where was I creative today?

Where did I channel through my own inner wisdom?

I do believe creative expression is a channeling of our higher self.

A channeling of our soul,

Of our inner wisdom and I think there are forces out there that are so scared of our creativity as human beings.

So scared of our creativity,

Of our creative force especially when we pull it together.

When we begin to work together in our creativity.

Because creativity doesn't live in rules,

Doesn't live in binds and rules and boxes.

Some of the most creative things you'll read or experience are created out of moving past the rules,

Out of saying screw that,

Right?

I'm not doing that.

I'm not doing it that way.

I'm gonna do it the way it feels right.

I'm gonna do it the way I'm being called to.

I'm gonna do it the way I'm being channeled to.

There is no rulebook to being creative.

There's no plan.

There's no step-by-step instructions on how to be creative.

Because creativity is different to each of us.

Because creativity,

We are born with it.

I mean maybe if I was to give you rules I would say go back to when you were a child.

Go back to the time before you were conditioned into believing creativity was a very specific thing or something that was out of your reach.

Go back to when you were a child.

When life was about exploration and asking questions and noticing and feeling and experiencing without judgment.

If I think back to my childhood there are so many videos of me running after geese or birds or ducks or squirrels or chipmunks.

Man,

There was such a freedom in following these wild animals,

Right?

These beautiful wild animals.

That was me expressing creative.

Running after,

Feeling the wind in my face,

Putting my arms out.

So many videos of me doing that.

And what's interesting is I see my kids as they grew up,

They did the same thing.

On the beach,

The seagulls running after,

Curious,

Creative,

Wondering if they walk the same path,

If they put their arms out,

If they talk to the seagull,

Will it stay?

Will it become their friend?

These are creative moments.

So think back to when you were a child.

How did you explore?

How did you feel through the world?

Were you really close to one sense or another sense?

And when I say senses,

I mean the five senses.

Seeing,

Hearing,

Smelling,

Tasting,

Touching,

Feeling,

Right?

Was there a sense that you were really connected to as a child?

I'm going to take a bridge now and just talk really quickly about creativity as an experience and an expression.

I've already talked a bit about creative expression as a channeling of our higher self in our soul and our inner wisdom.

But creativity shows up through our senses,

Through how we experience the world and how we express through our senses.

But I also,

If you've heard me speak before,

I speak about both imagination and memory as two umbrella senses that are really important when you think about creativity.

Our body is the instrument of our creativity.

When we start to place our awareness on our senses,

We're engaging our creativity.

We're looking at new ways.

We're listening to new ways.

We're feeling new ways.

We're smelling new ways.

We are basically tantalizing,

Right?

We're pulling on that beautiful cord of our creativity as we begin to go deeper into our awareness with our bodies.

So I suppose when we talk about,

Yeah,

There's no rule book to creativity,

The one thing I would say is go back into your memory to when you were a child and also begin to tap into your senses.

Start to play in between your senses.

Gee,

What's the smell of the color purple?

What is the taste of the universe?

What does forward movement look like?

What does it feel like?

Apple pie,

Right?

What does apple pie feel like?

You just start playing,

Start questioning,

Start having fun.

You know,

As children,

Creativity was so simple because we were playing all the time.

It was fun.

There wasn't this overarching conditioning around creativity that our lives are here to make money.

Our lives are here to be responsible.

Our lives are here to do this and that,

Right?

We didn't have that when we were children.

So creativity was unleashed more naturally.

So this was just a little bit of a beginning talk about creativity.

I love to speak on creativity and I love helping people unleash their creativity in all manners of their life.

And if you're interested in working more with your senses,

If you follow me,

Again,

My name is Jocelyn Bates,

And if you follow me here on Insight Timer,

I have a whole series of guided curiosities.

They are meditations,

But they're also guided curiosities into the senses in different environments while you're in a deep relaxing state.

So please check those out if you're interested in really developing your creativity and your curiosity.

Those guided curiosities are a beautiful way to start,

And you get a nice deep rest and rotation of consciousness with each of them.

So thank you for listening.

I'm going to be putting up more tracks around creativity and different ways to enter into creativity,

And really just speaking in awe of the creative flow that we as human beings have every birthright to.

Thank you for listening for quite some time,

And I am so grateful for your presence.

Namaste.
