Emotional urgency is the feeling that something must be done right now, even when it isn’t clear what that thing is. It often feels intense and compelling, but it doesn’t necessarily bring clarity. Over time, this state can erode agency, making decisions feel reactive rather than chosen. In this track, you’ll learn to distinguish emotional urgency from true urgency. While emotional urgency involves activation without clarity, true urgency brings grounded focus and organizes action. Understanding this difference helps you respond to situations from steadiness rather than pressure. This track introduces a simple framework for recognizing when urgency is guiding you and when it’s simply creating noise. It’s the first in a short series exploring emotional urgency, how it shows up in the body, and how working with it can restore agency and choice.

In this track,

We'll focus on how emotional urgency and true urgency feel in the body because the body usually knows before the mind does.

As a reminder,

Emotional urgency shows up as pressure in the body to act,

While true urgency comes with clarity about what actually needs to be done.

You don't need to analyze yourself as you listen.

The goal is simply to begin recognizing familiar sensations.

So emotional urgency often has a very particular quality.

For me,

It feels circular.

It's like the energy is swirling rather than moving forward.

I notice it pretty high up in my chest,

Sometimes in my throat.

It can feel like my jaw,

The front of my jaw is starting to move forward.

Sometimes I'll feel that energy in my head.

There's a pressure,

A discomfort,

And there's a sense that something needs to happen to make the feeling stop.

What's important here is that the action is not clear.

Lots of ideas might come up.

Things you could say,

Do,

Explain,

Fix.

They kind of swirl around in that head space or in the chest,

But none of them feel quite right.

The mind starts jumping ahead.

I call it future tripping.

Imagining future consequences,

Trying to solve multiple problems at once.

There's a lot going on.

Attention moves away from what's actually happening and into what might happen.

That is emotional urgency.

It's energy up high,

Swirling,

Not really having a place to go,

Feeling really uncomfortable.

True urgency feels quite different in the body.

There may still be activation at first,

And it is often in the chest,

But instead of swirling,

The energy begins to move downward.

There's a sense of weight,

Contact,

And grounding.

There's a gravity that comes with it.

The feet might feel more present.

The body can feel more solid and more organized.

It feels a bit more coherent.

Thoughts actually simplify in this state,

Rather than multiplying.

Instead of scanning for every possible outcome,

There's a narrowing toward what matters most.

So movement feels fueled rather than frantic.

You can act and remain steady at the same time.

Both states involve energy,

But only one involves coherence.

So one way to think about it is this.

Emotional urgency pulls energy up and out,

While true urgency allows the energy to settle down and through.

As you listen,

You might recognize one or both of these patterns from your own experience,

And you don't need to change anything.

Just notice what's familiar.

And it can really help to think about a time when you felt emotional urgency,

So some sort of misunderstanding,

Or something where you just felt like you needed to act to hold a relationship steady.

And just sense into your body,

Where does that go?

And then you can think to a true emergency,

Which is often much less frequent.

We don't run into true emergencies often.

And feel in your body where your energy went then.

Think about what was going on internally.

A lot of times it feels like the world kind of stops,

And we we stabilize,

That energy goes down to our feet,

We're strong and steady,

And then we act.

For now,

Awareness is enough.

Recognition is the first shift.

In the next track,

We'll talk about what to do when emotional urgency shows up,

How to work with it without suppressing it,

Or being driven by it,

So that agency can return.

Thank you for listening to this,

And please feel free to leave any questions or insights that you had,

And I look forward to connecting.

This track made me think about emotional urgency I experienced in the past. It seems you can still have bouts with emotional urgency when ruminating on something long ago.

Great follow-up to the first talk. You really put the feeling that we great into clear language that makes a lot of sense. I’ve felt both sides of this urgency and you’ve captured it perfectly. 🪬🐾🌿🌹🌷🌺🦋🙏🏽🕊️🪶🪬🐾
