Today,
We're exploring mindfulness of breath,
Reconnecting with your most faithful companion and powerful tool for transformation.
But just think about it.
Your breath is always with you,
Whether you notice it or not.
It moves through you from the moment you were born to your very last breath.
But most of the time,
We hardly pay attention to this miracle that's happening within us.
When we pay attention to our breath,
Though,
Something remarkable happens.
We become present.
The breath brings us right here,
Right now.
So let's begin.
Find yourself a comfortable position that best supports your body at this time.
Making any small adjustments as needed.
You may choose to close your eyes,
Or you may soften your gaze.
And letting yourself land here,
In this very moment.
Bring your awareness inward,
Nowhere to go,
Nowhere to be,
Nothing to do.
So now,
Start to bring your attention to the natural rhythm of your breath,
In this moment.
There's no need to change it,
We're just noticing.
And let's start by simply witnessing the breath as it moves in and out,
Like observing a gentle tide on the ocean.
And taking a moment to notice where you feel the breath the most.
Perhaps at the nostrils,
As cool air enters and warm air leaves.
As cool air exits.
Maybe in the gentle rise and fall of your chest or belly.
Or maybe it's the subtle movements of your ribs expanding and contracting.
There's no right or wrong place to focus.
Just let your awareness rest where the breath is most noticeable for you.
Now bring a gentle sense of curiosity to how the breath feels in this moment.
Is the inhale light or deep,
Smooth or uneven,
Without judgment or any need to explain or interpret or analyze?
Does the exhale feel long or short,
Effortless or a little tight?
And allowing yourself to be with what you notice.
See if you can notice how each breath has its own unique rhythm.
No two breaths are exactly the same.
Just observe with compassion,
Without needing to change or judge what you discover.
Now as you inhale,
See if you can begin to notice the freshness and purity of your breath.
With every inhale,
Clean air is filling your lungs,
Nourishing every cell in your body.
With every exhale,
Your body is naturally releasing what it no longer needs.
Can you feel how pure and life-giving this breath of yours is?
This is your breath,
Free and unfiltered.
This is the true power of the breath.
It brings in exactly what you need.
Now see if you can gently shift your attention to the subtle pause between breaths.
That brief moment of stillness before the next inhale begins.
Notice how each exhale naturally gives way to a moment of quiet before the next inhale effortlessly arrives.
Let yourself rest in that space,
In the peaceful,
Quiet between breaths.
And if your mind wanders,
Getting caught in thoughts,
Planning,
Or distractions,
That's completely natural and expected.
But when you notice this,
Gently guide your attention and awareness back to the breath,
Like returning home.
Each time you return,
You strengthen your ability to stay present and use your breath as an anchor.
No need to force focus,
Just keep gently coming back again and again.
And see if you can simply notice if your breath has changed since the beginning of this practice.
Is it a little slower,
Or smoother,
Or just more familiar and welcoming?
And even if it's subtle,
Notice if there's a feeling of lightness,
Or ease,
Or groundedness as you continue to breathe.
Remember,
This anchor is always available in moments of stress,
Joy,
Or uncertainty.
And when you're ready,
Begin to gently bring awareness back to your surroundings,
Opening your eyes if they are closed,
Perhaps wiggling your fingers and toes,
Making any movements as needed,
And taking in the feeling of your body,
Where it sits,
And in the space you are in.
Carrying this breath awareness and sense of your inner anchor with you into the rest of your day,
Wherever you are.
Thank you for taking the time to practice this meditation.
May we all be well,
May we all know peace,
And may we all be free.
