This is a time for you and your baby.
In my years as a paramedic,
I was there for the arrival of many babies and I saw how much a calm mother and a calm breath can matter.
So let's give you some of that calm tonight.
Find a comfortable position,
Lying on your left side is lovely,
With a pillow between your knees,
Or propped up gently with pillows behind you.
Whatever feels best for your body right now.
Let your eyes close,
If that feels good,
And gently close your mouth.
Let the breath move in and out through your nose.
There's nothing to get right here.
Just breathe comfortably.
And if anything ever feels uncomfortable,
Simply return to your natural breath.
Now,
If it feels right,
Rest one or both hands on your belly.
On your baby.
Feel the warmth of your hands.
Feel the gentle rise as you breathe in and the soft fall as you breathe out.
Your baby is right there,
Under your hands,
Moving with every breath you take.
Each breath in brings calm to your body.
Each breath out brings calm to your baby.
Now let's slow the breath a little.
Breathe in gently through your nose for 4 seconds.
2,
3,
4.
And breathe out slowly for 6.
2,
3,
4,
5,
6.
In.
.
.
Two.
.
.
Three.
.
.
Out 2 3 4 5 6 In 2 3 4 Out 2 3 4 5 6 Keep going in your own time,
Soft and slow,
Never forced.
As your breathing slows,
Your heart slows too.
Your shoulders soften,
Your jaw lets go.
As you settle,
Your baby feels it.
Calm for you,
Calm for your baby.
Now with each slow breath out,
Let these words settle into you.
You don't need to say them,
Just let them be here.
My body knows what to do.
I am safe.
My baby is safe.
I trust my body.
I am growing a life,
One breath at a time.
I don't have to have it all figured out tonight.
We are doing this together.
Calm for me?
Calm for you.
If a worry comes,
That's okay.
Worry is part of loving someone this much.
Notice it and let it pass,
And come back to the warmth of your hands and the softness of your breath.
Now let go of the counting.
Let your breathing find its own gentle nasal rhythm.
Just rest here,
You and your baby breathing together.
You can come back to this anytime you need it.
Before sleep,
When worry creeps in,
Or just to spend a quiet moment together.
Rest now,
Calm for you,
Calm for your baby.
