Hello and welcome.
Thank you for taking this time for yourself today.
This time is yours to slow down and to just be.
Before we begin,
I want you to think about something for a moment.
When was the last time you actually felt grateful for your feet?
Most of us don't really think about them much.
If anything,
We complain about them,
Hide them or feel embarrassed by them.
They're just there at the end of our legs.
But these two quiet parts of our bodies carry us everywhere,
Through every ordinary day and through every season of our lives.
So today,
We're just going to slow down for a few minutes and notice them,
Really notice them.
And you might be surprised how much gratitude you feel when you do.
So when you're ready,
Lie down comfortably on your back,
Let your arms rest next to you,
Palms facing up and stretch your legs out and let your feet fall gently open.
Take a few moments to make yourself feel as comfortable as possible.
Adjust anything you need to and then gently close your eyes.
There is nothing you need to do right now.
Nowhere you need to go,
Nothing to fix.
Just allow yourself to be here.
Now bring your attention into this moment.
Feel the places where your body is touching the floor or your bed.
Notice how you can fully relax into it and how it holds you.
We'll begin with the breathing technique to soothe and settle your nervous system.
I'll guide you as we inhale for four,
Hold for two and exhale for six.
Inhale gently through your nose for four,
Two,
Three,
Four.
Hold softly for two counts,
Two.
Exhale slowly and completely.
Let go of any tension,
Worry or hurry.
Again,
Inhale,
Two,
Three,
Four.
Hold,
Two.
Exhale,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six.
Take a moment to soften the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet.
One more time.
Inhale,
Two,
Three,
Four.
Hold,
Two.
Exhale,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six.
Now feel your body melting into the surface beneath you,
Your nervous system softening,
Your mind slowing down.
Now let your breath go back to its natural rhythm,
Easy and unforced.
Now bring your awareness to your feet.
Without moving them,
Just feel them.
Notice their temperature.
Can you feel anything touching them?
Air,
Fabric or a blanket?
Just acknowledge them.
Your feet are here,
Quiet,
Patient,
Faithfully resting at the end of your legs.
Bring your attention to your toes.
Notice their shape and the small spaces between them.
Thank them for being there.
Now notice the tops of your feet,
The skin,
The tendons,
The gentle curves that move when you walk.
Move your attention to your heels.
Feel how solid,
Strong and supportive they are.
Now move your awareness to the soles of your feet.
Feel how the arches curve like bridges.
Notice how broad the ball of your foot is.
Notice your ankles,
The hinge where your feet meet your legs,
The place where movement begins.
Now,
Feel your feet as a whole.
Two complete,
Beautiful feet,
Just resting at the end of your legs,
The foundation of your body.
Now just think for a moment about how incredible your feet actually are.
Each one holds 26 bones,
33 joints and more than a hundred muscles,
Tendons and ligaments,
All working together,
Quietly,
Without you ever having to think about it.
A mechanical masterpiece.
Even with all our technology,
Engineers still struggle to recreate something that moves the way your foot does.
With every step,
Your foot changes shape,
Adapting to the ground beneath it.
Your arch stores energy,
Then releases it again,
Like a bow releasing an arrow.
Step after step after step.
Step after step.
Every day,
You take thousands of steps.
Over a lifetime,
You take enough to circle the earth four times,
Four times.
Just imagine that for a moment.
Imagine all the places where your feet have quietly left their footprints.
Across tiled floors in busy shops,
Along the sand on the beach,
Across grass and soil and garden paths.
Maybe your feet have even touched the ground of other countries,
Maybe even other continents.
Picture a map of the world in your mind,
And imagine that it could show every footprint you have ever left on this earth.
Every path you've walked,
Every place your feet have carried you.
Every step a small mark in the story of where you have been.
Just let yourself see it.
Think about it.
These feet have carried you to everyone you've ever loved,
Towards something new,
Towards moments that have shaped your life.
They've walked you through grief and danced with you through joy.
They've stood at graves and at altars.
They've stepped into cold water and run on hot sand.
They've walked through hospital corridors,
Jumped over waves,
Climbed stairs,
Crossed streets,
Stood in kitchens and wandered through mountain paths.
They've served you quietly your whole life,
And every footprint is uniquely yours.
And now,
For a moment,
You're noticing them.
Let a warmth begin to rise in your chest.
Gratitude.
Simple,
Quiet gratitude for the things you've done.
The gift of your feet.
Now,
Just for a moment,
Think about what life would be like without them.
Without the gift of standing,
Walking,
Exploring.
To wake up and not feel the floor underneath your feet in the morning.
To not be able to step onto grass wet with morning dew.
To not be able to splash through a puddle or walk yourself to the bathroom.
Your world would suddenly become much smaller.
To need help to move.
You'd lose the freedom of time.
Taking a simple step.
Just feel that for a moment.
How fragile ordinary life really is.
And then,
Let that thought go.
And feel again the gift that is here right now.
Your feet at the end of your legs.
Feet that work.
Feet that carry you.
Just notice how your gratitude deepens.
It becomes more than appreciation.
It becomes wonder and grace.
It is realizing that you have been given something precious.
Notice how gratitude feels like a warmth in your chest.
And let it spread through your body.
Feel it expanding and slowly deepening into all.
Picture this in your mind.
A scene from long ago.
An upper room.
A basin.
A towel.
And Jesus.
See him there.
Really see him.
And now imagine something surprising.
In this quiet moment,
He kneels in front of you.
He gently takes one of your feet into his hands.
Feel his hands as he cups your heel.
The hands of a carpenter.
Strong.
Gentle.
Loving.
Feel the cool soothing water as he pours it over your foot.
Washing away the dust.
The tiredness.
The weight of the things you didn't even know you were carrying.
The king of kings on the floor with a towel.
Serving.
He looks up at you and in his eyes there is no judgment,
No disappointment,
No hurry,
Only love.
And remember this.
His own love.
His own feet were pierced so that yours could stand on holy ground.
The hands that wash you were pierced too so that you could be healed.
So that you could be whole.
So that you could stand without fear in the presence of God.
Feel the warmth of his hands.
The water flowing over your feet.
The quiet love in the space between you.
You are not just wonderfully made.
You are deeply loved.
Loved enough to be washed.
Loved enough to be held.
Loved enough to be pierced for.
Now imagine that love beginning right there in your feet.
In the place where his hands are holding you.
Let it slowly rise.
Up through your ankles.
Through your legs.
Through your belly.
And into your heart.
And as it reaches your heart,
Feel it spread through your whole body.
A quiet wave of grace moving through you.
Stay here for a moment.
Let yourself rest in this love.
And now,
Before you leave this quiet place,
Just imagine carrying this with you into your every day.
Let your feet become reminders.
In the morning when your feet touch the floor for the first time,
Pause for just a moment and feel the ground underneath them and remember.
When you slip on your shoes to begin the day,
Take a breath and quietly thank your feet for carrying you.
In the shower when you lift your foot to wash it,
Feel the water running over it and remember the basin.
Maybe say a small thank you.
And when you're standing somewhere waiting,
Notice the ground underneath you.
Wiggle your toes inside your shoes and remember,
You are held.
Even the ordinary ground beneath your feet in the middle of an ordinary moment is holy ground because you are loved on it.
Let every step become a quiet prayer.
A quiet thank you to your feet,
To the one who made them and to the one who still holds them.
And now,
Begin to slowly bring a little movement back into your feet.
Gently wiggle your toes.
Softly rotate your ankles.
Feel the life moving in them again,
The strength in them,
Their readiness to carry you.
Take a deep breath and exhale slowly.
Softly open your eyes.
Your feet are beautiful.
Your foundation is love and everywhere you walk,
You walk on holy ground.
Go in peace beloved and thank you for meditating with me.
