Hello and welcome to the Nourished Sensitive 9-Week Elemental Mindfulness Course.
In today's first lesson,
We're going to do an overview of the 9 Elements of Nourishment Framework.
And this is to help you understand what that is,
Who it's made for,
How it can help you,
And we're going to also go through each of the elements so that you understand the definition,
Why these are essential elements for nourishment,
And how they can help you thrive as a highly sensitive or neurodivergent person.
So the 9 Elements of Nourishment is a holistic wellness framework that I designed to support sensitive,
Intuitive,
And neurodivergent nervous systems in building sustainable well-being from the inside out.
It is not a productivity system,
It's not a self-optimization plan,
And it's not about fixing what is wrong with you.
This framework is about creating internal safety,
Relational depth,
Embodied awareness,
And rhythms of care that allow you to flourish as you are.
So there's nothing to fix,
There's nothing to solve.
This framework is about meeting yourself where you are on your journey with your healing and identifying what your system needs.
And this framework recognizes that nourishment is multidimensional.
So we are not just physical bodies.
We are emotional beings,
We're mental processors,
We're spiritual meaning makers,
We're relational creatures,
Creative forces,
And nervous systems that require safety in order to thrive.
So the 9 Elements work together like an ecosystem or an inner garden,
And each one strengthens the others.
I created this framework for myself when I discovered that I was a highly sensitive person and then later on discovered that I'm ADHD,
Autistic and ADHD.
And when I was creating it and working with clients and patients as a registered dietitian and holistic health coach,
I wanted to understand not just how to be well,
But what are the specific elements that we need,
All of us need,
In order to take good care of ourselves,
Understand our bodies,
Our minds,
Our spirits,
And be able to thrive as sensitive people in a world that isn't really built for us.
This is different from other wellness approaches because it's designed to really address the individual.
So each element is specific enough to help you examine that part of your life,
But it's also universal and broad enough where you can decide what part of that element you need to work on.
So if we talk about emotional health,
There are many things that are involved in having a healthy relationship with our emotions.
So I didn't want to box us in too much.
I wanted to decide what are the elements that are included in wellness,
But still keep it broad enough where it could apply to the individual because we're all unique,
Right?
The metaphor that I like to use is the garden.
So in a garden,
You have all these different plants,
Right?
And they all need similar things to grow and thrive.
They need sunlight,
They need water,
They need soil,
They need a nice fertile supply of microbes in the soil.
But each plant has its own individual needs as well.
And if any one of those things is out of balance for that plant,
Then it won't thrive.
So that's kind of how this framework works.
It has enough applicability where every plant can get what it needs,
But it's also broad enough that individuals are not missed.
This framework is created especially for highly sensitive individuals,
Deep feelers,
Neurodivergent folks,
So ADHD,
ADHD,
Autistic,
And individuals with complex trauma histories,
Caregivers and deep feelers and empaths,
People who have lived in survival mode throughout their life,
Those who are rebuilding trust with their body and their emotions,
Individuals who have been praised for being high functioning,
But who feel internally dysregulated.
This framework is for people who don't need more discipline,
Who don't need to be told what they're doing wrong.
They need safety.
It's for people who don't need to try harder,
But who need gentle structure and nervous system literacy.
And it's for anybody who's interested in growing,
Right?
And who finds that they want to take a holistic approach.
They want to be seen as a whole person and grow in a way that honors every part of them,
Mind,
Body,
And spirit.
So with that,
We're going to go through each of the elements.
The nine element framework,
The reason why it's nine elements is I wanted to include elements within mind,
Body,
And spirit.
So each of those hierarchical categories has three elements underneath it.
So our mind elements are emotional health,
Self-empowerment,
And value alignment.
And I'm going to go through each of them so that you understand what each of these elements are.
So our first element in the mind category is emotional health.
Emotional health,
Put simply,
Is learning to understand,
Regulate,
And metabolize your emotions in a safe and embodied way.
This element is essential because unprocessed emotions become symptoms in our eating patterns,
In our nervous system,
When it feels dysregulated,
And in our relationships in terms of how reactive we are relationally.
This element helps us thrive by building emotional literacy so that we can put words to our feelings,
Reducing shame around being a deep feeler,
It improves our nervous system regulation,
And it can help transform certain behavioral patterns like emotional eating into emotional awareness and peace.
How it connects to other elements.
So when we are emotionally healthy,
This supports digestive health because stress impacts our gut,
It strengthens embodiment because we feel our emotions in our body,
It can deepen our spiritual growth because emotions are pathways to meaning,
And it also enhances self-empowerment because clarity about how we feel builds agency.
It builds a sense of,
I know myself,
And I know what I need.
So each of the elements is connected to all of the other elements because health is interconnected,
Right?
You can't change one thing without changing everything.
And the beauty of that is that when you work on any one of these elements,
You'll see improvement in all of them.
So let's talk about the next element in the mind category,
And that is self-empowerment,
Element two.
Simply defined,
Self-empowerment is working on developing self-trust,
Self-knowledge,
And resilience.
Self-empowerment is essential because without self-trust,
We outsource our authority to diets,
Systems,
Relationships,
Or societal or cultural expectations.
When we work on self-empowerment,
That element helps us thrive by building confidence,
Strengthening our decision-making,
Reducing behaviors like people-pleasing,
And supporting healthy boundary setting.
It connects to the other elements because self-empowerment fuels our value alignment.
When we know ourselves,
Then we feel connected and aligned with what matters to us,
Our values.
It makes nutrition more sustainable because we trust our bodies and our internal wisdom rather than external authorities.
It supports optimal living because it moves us from agency to action.
So when we feel empowered within ourselves,
We feel empowered to take steps that empower us even more,
And we take action.
And it also stabilizes embodiment,
Which is trusting your body's signals.
So that's element two,
Self-empowerment.
Moving on to the third element in the mind category,
This is value alignment,
Element three.
The simple definition is that we are living in alignment with our core values,
The things that matter most to us.
And these are different for everyone.
And that when we are aligned in our values,
We can then create a life that reflects them.
This is an essential element because misalignment in our values creates chronic stress and an internal fragmentation.
We're not living what truly matters to us,
And so we feel that disconnect,
We feel that fragmentation.
And it can make us feel like we're not really living the life that we're meant to.
When we are thriving in value alignment,
It reduces our decision fatigue because we know what matters and we can make those decisions more readily.
It clarifies our purpose in life and gives us a sense of meaning and direction.
It helps build integrity because you can act in alignment and integrity with what matters rather than not knowing what your values are and just kind of making decisions based on others' expectations or pressure.
And it also helps expand our comfort zone safely.
Value alignment connects to optimal living,
One of our spiritual elements.
It helps shape spiritual growth.
It supports self-empowerment,
And it can reduce emotional conflict in the emotional health category.
So those are our three mind elements,
Emotional health,
Self-empowerment,
And value alignment.
The next category in the nine-element framework is our body elements,
And these include holistic nutrition,
Physical fitness,
And digestive health.
So holistic nutrition is our first body element,
And the simple definition is that nourishing your body through intuitive,
Mindful eating integrates physiology,
Psychology,
Ritual.
So holistic nutrition is not just eat healthy foods,
Right?
It's what is my body telling me,
And what is my awareness and my presence and my relationship with food telling me,
And how do I decide what to eat based on those factors?
This is essential because food is foundational to our health.
Blood sugar,
Micronutrients,
And stress physiology all shape our mental and emotional health.
When we approach nutrition holistically,
Rather than through a diet culture or moralistic rules around food and we have a healthy relationship with food,
It stabilizes our mood,
It regulates our energy,
It supports hormone balance,
It boosts digestion,
And it helps us have a peaceful,
Non-toxic belief system around food.
It makes us more resilient against diet culture.
And holistic nutrition directly impacts element one,
Emotional health.
It strengthens our digestive health,
Which is another element.
It supports embodiment,
And it helps enhance self-empowerment because you experience more food autonomy and food freedom.
So that's element four in the body category,
Holistic nutrition.
Element five,
Physical fitness.
This is all about joyful,
Functional movement that supports your body's real-life needs.
It's not about appearance or aesthetics.
It's about living a life in a body that allows you to move in ways that bring you joy and a body that is fit for the kinds of activities that you want to do.
It's essential because movement regulates the nervous system and it helps us metabolize stress.
When we are physically fit and we are moving in ways that feel good,
It improves our sense of resilience,
It enhances body trust,
It builds confidence without having to lose weight,
And it releases stored tension,
Which can help with things like high blood pressure or digestive issues or muscle tension.
Physical fitness connects to emotional health because movement helps us process our stress and our emotion.
It enhances embodiment in terms of how you feel in your body.
It improves digestive health by keeping things flowing and moving,
And it reinforces self-empowerment.
The last element in the body category is digestive health.
I put this in its own element because the digestive system is so important.
I believe it deserves its own category.
Digestive health is all about understanding and nurturing the brain-gut connection to improve absorption,
Processing,
Mood,
And overall vitality.
It's essential because the gut is deeply connected to our mood,
Our immunity,
Our hormone regulation,
Our nutrition,
And so much more.
Digestive health helps us thrive because it improves nutrient absorption,
It supports intuition,
It enhances our emotional regulation,
And it can reduce inflammation and discomfort in the body.
Digestive health connects strongly to emotional health through the mind-gut connection and the vagus nerve.
It supports holistic nutrition,
It impacts our spiritual growth through the gut intuition or gut feeling,
And it influences embodiment,
Helping us feel more comfortable in our body.
So those are the three body elements,
Holistic nutrition,
Physical fitness,
And digestive health.
Now let's move on to the last three elements in the framework,
And these are our spirit elements.
They include embodiment,
Optimal living,
And spiritual growth.
So embodiment is all about feeling at home in your body and present in your lived experience.
It's essential to be embodied because many sensitive,
Deep-feeling,
And trauma-impacted individuals live in a dissociated or disconnected state from their bodies.
So when we get embodied,
It helps us thrive by building body acceptance,
It improves interoceptive awareness,
Which is awareness of what's happening inside our body in terms of sensations and what our body is telling us,
It enhances feelings of pleasure and presence that reduce anxiety and other things that happen when we're dissociated or disconnected,
And it can help reduce shame around bodies,
Which many of us live with if you've ever struggled with your body image.
Embodiment connects to emotional health,
It strengthens our emotional health because when we are in our body,
We can feel our emotions more,
It deepens our spiritual growth because we're more present,
We're more aware,
And we're getting signals from our body wisdom,
It makes physical fitness feel more joyful and motivating,
And it grounds our living,
Optimal living,
In reality.
If we're not embodied,
It's hard to experience life as it really is.
The next element,
Element eight,
Is optimal living,
And this is all about aligning our daily habits,
Behaviors,
And choices with our deeper values and purpose.
Element eight connects really well to element three,
Value alignment.
It's all about living a life that feels aligned,
Making choices and doing rituals and habits that support what really matters to you and your purpose in life.
It's essential because without intention,
We can just drift into survival patterns,
And we can be kind of checked out from our life,
Like we're not really in the driver's seat.
We might feel lost or depressed or just feel like we're drifting,
Like we don't have any sense of direction.
So optimal living helps us thrive by building more clarity about our life,
It encourages proactive,
Intentional living,
It strengthens leadership skills,
And it can help you feel more joy.
Optimal living is anchored in value alignment,
It requires self-empowerment because it needs us to have more agency over our lives,
It's supported by holistic nutrition and fitness,
And it helps us express our spiritual growth outwardly.
The last element in the nine-element framework is element nine,
Spiritual growth.
This is all about developing a relationship with something greater than yourself.
I always say God as you understand God.
Just something greater,
Maybe that's your higher self,
Maybe that's your ancestors,
Maybe that's spirit,
The universe,
Whatever word resonates for you,
But it's something bigger than just the thoughts in your mind.
And spiritual growth helps you cultivate more meaning,
More intuition,
And more compassion for yourself.
It's essential because humans need meaning in order to metabolize suffering.
Life is hard,
Right?
Things happen that we don't have control over,
And suffering is a fact of life.
But when we grow spiritually and we have a connection to something greater than ourselves,
And something greater than life,
Then we can process that suffering,
And we can be more resilient.
It helps us thrive,
This element helps us thrive by reducing shame,
Strengthening our intuition,
It helps build hope and resilience,
It encourages loving kindness.
Spiritual growth is so important.
And it connects to other elements because it supports emotional healing,
It helps us feel more present in our body,
It clarifies what our values are,
And it inspires optimal living.
So that is the nine element framework.
It's important to understand that this is like an ecosystem,
It's dynamic,
And it's changing.
No element in the framework stands alone.
You can enter through any doorway.
So if you are feeling like you need to do some work around emotional health,
You can start there.
If nutrition is an area where you feel like you need to get some more support and explore,
You can start there.
Any one of the elements can be a doorway,
And none of them stand alone,
They all influence each other.
Dysregulation in one area is going to affect the others because everything is connected.
And strengthening one element will strengthen the whole system,
Which is the beautiful thing.
It's almost like the more you dive into this,
The more you're cultivating your inner garden,
Your inner ecosystem,
And like a garden in nature,
It grows and it thrives and it flourishes.
So for example,
If someone improves their sleep and stabilizes their blood sugar through holistic nutrition and embodiment,
Their emotional health improves.
If someone heals their trauma,
Digestion improves.
If someone clarifies their values,
Their nervous system calms down.
It's not linear,
Like where you start,
You know,
A six-week health program,
It's cyclical.
It's a dynamic process.
It's like nature,
Ecological.
So in closing,
I invite you to reflect on which element feels strongest in your life right now,
Which feels maybe most neglected,
Or where do you feel most dysregulated,
And which doorway feels safest to enter first.
If you would like some help with this,
