Welcome.
I'm Teresa and I'm so glad you're here.
As we begin today,
I'd like to offer you a question.
Not one you need to answer right now.
Just something we can hold together for a little while.
What if you're not too sensitive?
What if you never were?
Maybe you've heard those words before.
You're too sensitive.
Maybe someone said them directly.
Or perhaps you learn them in other ways.
When something bothered you and nobody else seemed bothered.
When a sound felt unbearably loud and everyone else kept talking.
When someone's tone changed and you noticed immediately.
When plans changed unexpectedly and your whole body reacted.
When you just needed more time.
More quiet.
More information.
More space.
And the people around you seemed to need.
And perhaps little by little,
You begin to wonder… Why does everything affect me so much?
Let's take a nice slow breath here.
Nothing to change.
Nothing to deepen.
Just notice that your body is breathing.
And notice what is supporting you right now.
The chair.
The floor,
The bed.
Wherever you've chosen to be for these next few minutes.
You don't need to make your experience or choice make any sense to anyone else.
Imagine for a moment that two people are standing outside on a cool autumn morning.
One person needs a sweater.
The other doesn't.
We wouldn't say that the person reaching for the sweater is bad at temperature.
Their bodies simply received the information differently.
And yet,
When the information our nervous system receives is emotional,
Or sensory.
Are social.
We can become incredibly judgmental about it.
Why can't I handle this?
Why does that bother me?
Why am I so tired?
Why can't I just ignore it?
But what if sensitivity isn't a measure of how well you're coping?
What if it's simply information?
Your nervous system is noticing something.
Perhaps you notice sound,
Light.
Texture.
Movement.
Smell,
And temperature.
Perhaps you notice people,
A slight change in someone's face.
A pause before they answer.
A shift in the feeling of a room.
Perhaps you feel joy deeply too,
Through music,
Color.
Beauty or nature.
A tiny gesture of kindness.
Something everyone else walks past that somehow stops you in your tracks.
Sensitivity isn't only the part of you that becomes overwhelmed.
It's also the part of you that notices.
Take a moment now and simply notice your surroundings.
You don't need to name everything.
Just allow your senses to tell you what's here.
Maybe there's a sound in the background.
Noticing the temperature.
The feeling of fabric against your skin.
The weight of your body against the surface beneath you.
And rather than deciding whether any of these sensations should bother you or shouldn't,
See if you can just simply observe them.
This is what my nervous system is experiencing right now.
No judgment,
No comparison,
Just information.
Maybe there is something your body would like less of.
Less noise,
Less light.
Less conversation.
Less touching.
Less expectation.
And perhaps there is something you would like more of.
More warmth,
Pressure.
Movement.
Stillness.
Music.
Quiet.
Space.
.
.
You don't have to give yourself everything you're asking for right now.
Sometimes we can't.
But there is something deeply compassionate about simply listening.
Oh,
You need less right now.
Or you need more.
I hear you.
Because perhaps the opposite of being too sensitive isn't becoming tougher.
Perhaps it's becoming more fluent in the language of your nervous system.
Knowing what overwhelms you.
Knowing what settles you.
Knowing what restores you.
And knowing when you've had enough.
And most of all,
Believing yourself.
Even when someone else's nervous system would make a different choice.
Taking another easy breath.
I wonder how much energy you've spent trying not to be affected.
Trying not to react.
Trying not to need.
Trying to tolerate just a little bit longer.
Perhaps your sensitivity was never asking you to overcome it.
Perhaps it was asking you to listen.
If it feels comfortable,
Place a hand somewhere on your body.
Your chest.
Your belly.
Your forehead.
Anywhere that feels natural and comforting for you.
And perhaps offer yourself these words.
I don't have to experience the world the way anyone else does.
What I notice is real.
What I need matters.
I am allowed to respond to the information my body gives me.
And finally,
I don't have to become less sensitive to deserve belonging.
Let's take a moment with that.
There may be places in your life where you can still choose to stretch.
Places where you tolerate discomfort because something matters to you.
Places where compromise is necessary.
Sensitivity doesn't mean arranging the entire world around yourself.
It simply means you no longer have to abandon yourself while you're living in it.
As we begin to finish,
I'd like to return to the question we started with.
What if you're not too sensitive?
What if your nervous system simply notices more?
What if the goal was never to feel less,
But to learn how to care for the person who feels so much?
You don't have to answer that today.
Just carry the possibility with you.
Maybe nothing about your sensitivity needs to be fixed.
Maybe it simply needs to be understood.
Thank you for spending this time with me.
Take gentle care of yourself.
And as you return to your day,
Remember as always,
You are loved,
You are whole,
You are enough.
