Related slow-breathing research points to calmer physiology, including steadier heart-rhythm recovery after hard exertion (Jones et al., 2026). What is not yet supported: large trials, effects beyond military and tactical samples, lasting change over time, and any claim that it treats a diagnosed condition. Skilled performance under pressure also does not reliably improve (Conlon et al., 2022), (Kula et al., 2025).
The strongest single finding is that student soldiers trained in tactical breathing shot far more accurately on the hardest first shot than an untrained group, a very large effect (Cohen's d = 1.698, p < .001, n = 100) that in practical terms means the average trained shooter outperformed nearly everyone in the comparison group (Ibrahim et al., 2023). Beyond that, a soldier study linked the practice to lower acute stress (Bouchard et al., 2012), and related slow-breathing research shows steadier autonomic recovery and blunted stress markers around simulated threats (Jones et al., 2026), (Dillard et al., 2023).
