RECOMMENDED DOSE
The largest randomised controlled trial of slow breathing to date had participants practise coherent breathing at roughly 5.5 breaths per minute for about 10 minutes a day over 4 weeks. A short, daily 10-minute session is therefore an evidence-backed, easily sustainable starting point.
A daily practice remains the tested pattern from the coherent-breathing trial, while the step up to 15–20 minutes is extrapolated from closely related slow-paced breathing work: a dose-response study of slow-paced breathing on cardiac vagal activity and a controlled study using a 30-minute slow-breathing session suggest that somewhat longer sessions are well tolerated and can deepen the effect.
A single 30-minute slow-breathing session was directly tested in a randomised study of performance anxiety, supporting a longer maintenance session at the upper end of this range. Daily practice is trial-tested; practising twice a day is an editorial extension for committed practitioners and has not been directly tested.

You breathe only through the nose and deliberately reduce both the speed and volume of each breath until it is barely perceptible, following McKeown's cue to breathe as if trying not to disturb a feather held under the nose. This soft, minimal pattern creates a mild air hunger that stays gentle and is sustained, quietly and without strain, over a set period. It is a low-intensity practice, the opposite of maximal-ventilation breathwork.
Do not confuse Light Breathing with high-intensity breathwork such as Wim Hof or Holotropic breathing, which use fast, deep, maximal breathing; Light Breathing is the opposite, minimal and barely perceptible. It is also not a breath-hold practice, and although it shares its lineage and reduced-breathing logic with Buteyko, it is the Oxygen Advantage adaptation rather than clinical Buteyko itself. The gentle air hunger is intentional and should stay comfortable, not a struggle for breath.

Often lumped together as breathwork, but the Wim Hof Method uses intense, deliberate over-breathing and breath holds to energise, the opposite of Light Breathing's soft, minimal, calming breath.
Holotropic Breathwork
Holotropic breathwork uses fast, deep, sustained over-breathing to reach altered states of consciousness; Light Breathing does the reverse, reducing rate and volume toward stillness and calm.

Common advice is to take a big, deep breath, but Light Breathing asks you to breathe less, not more, softening each breath until it is barely perceptible rather than filling the lungs.
Buteyko Breathing
Light Breathing is adapted from Buteyko, so they are closely related rather than identical; Buteyko is the broader clinical breathing-retraining tradition from which the Oxygen Advantage light-breathing form is drawn.

What is not yet supported: any large trial of Light Breathing as a distinct technique, lasting or clinical-level change, and, in the same anxiety trial, overall somatic well-being did not improve even as anxiety eased (Canazei et al., 2025).

The findings are not uniform: one large placebo-controlled trial of 400 adults found coherent breathing worked no better than a matched breathing comparison (Fincham et al., 2023), and no trial has yet tested Light Breathing as a distinct technique.
