Meditations for people who do too much.
Awe.
But what will never,
Never change is the wonder,
The indescribable wonder,
To me of seeing Earth lying in space as in the hallow of God's hand.
From Zenna Henderson.
Awe is a feeling that is rare in our busy lives.
Awe means stopping and noticing.
Awe is at least momentarily letting ourselves remember and experience the vastness of the universe or the amazingly intricate design in the petal of a tiny flower.
One of my friends from Germany came bearing gifts when she visited.
The most intriguing was a tiny one-inch square magnifying glass which unfolded such that the distance between the end of the stand and the magnifying glass was a little over an inch.
Exactly the distance needed to see clearly the tiniest veins in a leaf.
The detail on the back of a bug or the center of a minute flower.
This little device opened up an entire universe to my awareness.
What she had really given me was a gift of awe.
Life without awe is like food without herbs or spices.
I have only to look around me to remember the feeling of awe.
