Sound Bath Sessions 228: Kenji Azuma
Kenji Azuma is a multi-instrumentalist, musician, and composer. After lunch, I met him in Ebara, a sleepy residential area. The new community center there had two recording studio rooms that were very quiet, even with the full-height glass wall. He used the piano in the space and brought his handpan, computer, and a pair of beautiful-sounding speakers that his friend designed. Kenji is a brand ambassador for Meinl and gives performances using their instruments. Kenji's sessions were musical and calm, much like his own personality. His tracks evoke nostalgia and dreams. They are wonderful improvised experiences. This was a pretty cool track. For this track, he played the piano, handpan, and synthesizer, merging technology with acoustic instruments. He used a microphone to input the piano into his computer, where it was processed and reversed/delayed to give an amazing texture. There was a background track of soft chirping crickets.
