Breath is a superpower that is available to us at all times. Just five minutes of focusing on our breath is sufficient to help clear the mind, improve mood, boost brain function, reduce stress, slow down the aging process and support a healthy metabolism.

My name is Ryan and welcome to this mindfulness practice where we focus on our breath.

In the words of Dr.

Flatow,

When we breathe more consciously,

Our breath does more than merely keep us alive.

It enables us to live healthier,

Longer and fuller lives.

Find a comfortable seat or come to lie down.

Taking a deep inhale and with exhalation relaxing the shoulders.

Notice if there is tension or tightness anywhere in the body and with every exhalation letting go of the tension and the tightness.

We will take three deep slow breaths with every inhale inflating the belly like a balloon and with every exhale letting the belly go towards the spine.

A lot of the time in our lives we never really pay attention to the fact that we are breathing.

Yes,

Breath is a critical function that can keep us alive but it is also a superpower which we can access anytime we choose to become aware of it.

We will now begin to notice the path of the breath as it comes in through the nose,

Goes to the back of the throat,

Into the chest and the belly and out of the belly,

Back into the chest,

Back of the throat and out of the nostrils.

For the next few moments gently noticing the path of the breath as it travels in and out of our body and if you find that any thoughts are coming to mind pretending that those thoughts are like birds and watching them fly away.

Coming back to the rhythm of your breath,

Notice how the breath feels in the heart center with every inhale and how the ribs contract with every exhale.

Now slowly bringing your attention back to the room you're in,

Noticing sounds and smells around you and gently opening your eyes.

Thank you for joining me for this mindfulness practice of focusing on our breath.

Namaste
