Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I'm a very proud grandma.
I write stories for my grandchildren and I'm very happy to share them with you too.
So make yourself comfortable,
Settle back because my next story is about to begin.
Grandma catches Covid.
Oh no!
Are you sure it's just a cold?
Oh,
I see.
Okay,
Well I'll tell her.
Rest up and I'll call you tomorrow.
Bye.
Kelty was listening to her mum on the telephone to Grandma.
It was Saturday morning and they were meant to be going to town to buy new coats for her and Louis.
Autumn was on the way and they had both grown a lot through the summer.
Is Grandma okay?
Asked Kelty.
No not really,
Replied Mum.
She has a sore throat and her body feels a little achy.
Has she got Covid?
Asked Kelty,
Slightly worried.
She has done a Covid test and thankfully it is negative,
Said Mum,
Although she also felt a little worried.
She's going to sleep now and,
Fingers crossed,
She will feel better tomorrow.
We'll go shopping when she feels up to it.
Now go and put a movie on to watch with Louis and I'll make some popcorn for you both.
Kelty went into the lounge where Louis was playing with his favourite toy,
Rocket.
She was glad her Grandma didn't have Covid.
Most people were not getting as sick with a virus as they had done when it first appeared in the world,
But many still felt really poorly with it and Kelty didn't want her Grandma to be one of them.
Kelty busied herself with finding a movie for her and her brother.
Toy Story was Louis' favourite movie and Kelty decided that that would be a good one to watch to take her worries away.
Decision made,
It wasn't long before Mum came in with bowls of popcorn and glasses of milk for them both.
They made themselves comfy and enjoyed their treat as the movie played.
The next morning Kelty went downstairs and heard her Mum on the telephone.
Oh dear,
That's not good.
Yes,
I can do that.
No,
I don't think that is a very good idea.
Ok,
Sleep will help a lot.
I'll call you later.
Bye.
Was that Grandma?
Asked Kelty.
Yes,
Sweetheart,
Replied Mum.
She done another Covid test this morning as she feels worse today than yesterday and it was positive.
She has Covid so we must keep away until she tests negative.
I don't want us to come down with it too.
Will she be ok?
Asked Kelty,
Remembering how sick some of the people had been that she had seen on the news.
She has had all her jabs so hopefully this will only be a mild case,
Mum said,
Trying to put her daughter's mind at ease.
Nothing to worry about,
I'm sure.
Fingers crossed,
Whispered Kelty as she began to make her breakfast.
She put some cereal into a bowl and poured milk over it.
She really didn't feel hungry but she had to eat something.
She moved the spoon around her bowl and took a couple of mouthfuls but couldn't really eat.
Are you feeling ok Kelty?
Mum asked,
Going over and putting her arm around her daughter.
I'm worried about Grandma,
Kelty said.
What if she becomes really ill and has to go to hospital like the people we've seen on the news?
We know a lot more about Covid now than we did two years ago,
Said Mum reassuringly.
Grandma has had all her Covid vaccinations so with sleep,
Food and plenty of fluid she should get through this fairly quickly.
Kelty still felt worried.
Let's think of things we can do to help her while she's poorly,
Suggested Mum,
Trying to move Kelty's thoughts away from the problem.
I could paint her a picture and we could buy her some chocolate and cakes,
Said Kelty,
Knowing how much her Grandma loved anything sweet.
That's a good idea,
Replied Mum,
And I also think some homemade chicken soup would help her too.
Let's finish breakfast and go to the supermarket to get supplies.
Grandma needs some paracetamol and other bits so we get them at the same time.
An hour later they were back home with the items Grandma had asked for,
Along with some chocolate,
Biscuits,
Grapes and the ingredients for soup and cake.
Homemade cakes taste so much better than shop-bought ones,
Mum said,
And I know how much you and Louis like making them.
Yes,
We do,
Said Kelty and Louis together.
Let's make the soup today,
Said Mum.
The time's getting on and this will be nice for Grandma to eat before she goes to bed tonight.
We'll make the cake another day when we have more time.
Now let's wash our hands before we start.
They all washed their hands and then Mum washed all the ingredients.
Kelty carefully chopped onions and carrots and Louis placed them all into a large saucepan.
Mum added pepper and chicken stock before putting it on the stove to simmer until all the vegetables were soft.
Then she added the chopped leftover chicken from the night before,
Stirred it well and left it to completely heat through.
Once that was heated up nicely,
Kelty used a blender and the soup was finished.
Carefully Mum poured it into a large thermos flask.
You and Louis can take this and the shopping round to Grandma's,
Kelty,
Said Mum as she placed all the items into a carrier bag.
I'll ring her to let her know you are coming.
Come on,
Louis,
Said Kelty,
Picking up the bag.
But don't go running up to Grandma when we see her.
We have to keep away from her,
Otherwise we could catch the virus.
They walked round to Grandma's house,
Which wasn't far away,
And Kelty knocked on the door.
She put the bag down by the door then took hold of Louis' hand and the two of them stood well back away from the house.
Grandma opened the door,
Coughing into her handkerchief.
Hello,
Sweethearts,
She said,
Picking up the carrier bag and looking inside it.
Thanks for getting this for me.
Oh,
Chocolate too,
Just what I need to cheer me up.
There's homemade chicken soup in the flask for you too,
Said Kelty.
We made it special,
Said Louis,
Not really understanding why he couldn't give his Grandma a hug.
That's just what I need to make me better,
Said Grandma,
Smiling at her grandchildren and feeling an ache in her heart as she longed to hug them.
Well soon,
Grandma,
Said Kelty,
Blowing a kiss before leaving.
Later that day,
Kelty FaceTimed with her Grandma.
That chicken soup was delicious,
Grandma said.
It has made me feel so much better.
That's good,
Said Kelty.
Please,
They had done something to help her.
They chatted for a while and then Grandma started yawning.
Looks like it's time for bed,
Kelty said.
I do seem to tire very easily at the moment,
Said Grandma.
I'll call you again tomorrow,
Said Kelty.
I love you,
Grandma.
Bye.
The next day Grandma was feeling a little worse when Kelty FaceTimed her after school and couldn't speak for long without coughing.
I think I should go back to bed,
Said Grandma,
Coughing and spluttering between words.
That's a good idea,
Said Kelty,
Not liking seeing her Grandma so poorly.
I love you,
Grandma.
I love you more,
Sweetheart.
Bye.
And the scream went blank.
Kelty began to cry.
What's happened,
Darling?
Asked Mom,
Rushing over to comfort her daughter.
Grandma is much worse today and I'm scared she will have to go to hospital.
Sometimes we feel worse before we feel better,
Said Mom.
Grandma just needs plenty of rest so her body can heal and repair itself.
Come on,
Louis is building things with his Lego.
Let's go and help him.
Kelty wiped her tears away and went to play with her brother,
All the while hoping her Grandma would get better soon.
The next day,
After school,
Kelty went for a walk in the forest with Duggee.
Let's find some things to cheer Grandma up,
Said Kelty.
Duggee barked with excitement.
He loved going out in the forest with Kelty.
There were so many trees and plants to sniff and insects and squirrels to chase.
Kelty walked along and noticed lots of different wild flowers growing.
She picked some of them along with a few pretty leaves and twigs from nearby shrubs.
The pinks,
Blues and yellow colours of the flowers looked very pretty amongst the different shades of green.
She decided to take them straight round to her Grandma and,
Calling Duggee,
They set off.
Kelty placed the bunch of flowers on Grandma's doorstep,
Rang the bell and then stood back.
Hello sweetheart,
Said Grandma,
Opening the door.
This is a nice surprise.
I picked some flowers for you in the forest,
Kelty said,
Pointing to them on the doorstep.
Grandma picked them up and sniffed them.
I'm sure they smell lovely,
She said,
But I seem to have lost my sense of smell and taste.
This Covid is nasty.
Oh Grandma,
That's a shame,
Said Kelty,
Knowing how much her Grandma loved the smell of flowers.
Are you feeling any better today?
Maybe a little,
Replied Grandma,
But not much.
I was just going for a lie down when you rang the doorbell.
I still feel so tired most of the time.
Sleep is a good healer,
Kelty said,
Remembering what her Mum always said to her when she was unwell.
I'll call you tomorrow after school.
The next day on the way home from school,
Kelty was thinking of what she could do to make her Grandma smile.
She was nearly home when she noticed a round flat stone lying in the road near the curb.
She picked it up.
It was about the size of the palm of her hand and she liked how soft it felt.
She placed it into her pocket and somehow knew this would be something special for Grandma.
After tea,
Kelty sat at the kitchen table and FaceTimed with her Grandma.
They talked about her day at school and then Kelty done her homework with Grandma watching and helping where she could.
Grandma looked comfortable sitting on the sofa covered in a cosy blanket,
Which she said helped her feel better for some reason.
She was just finishing off her last piece of homework when she heard a soft kind of purring sound coming from her phone.
She looked up and saw her Grandma was fast asleep.
Kelty smiled.
I love you Grandma,
She whispered as she ended the call.
With her homework finally finished,
Kelty remembered the stone she had found earlier.
She took it out of her pocket and thought it looked the perfect shape of a ladybird.
Getting her paints,
She carefully painted the stone red and black,
Creating a beautiful stone ladybird.
That's wonderful,
Said Mum,
Who had come in to make a cup of tea.
She loved seeing her daughter create things.
It's for Grandma to make her smile,
Said Kelty,
Pleased with how the stone looked.
She will love it,
Said Mum,
Smiling.
Why don't you cover it with my clear now varnish to protect the paint,
She suggested.
OK,
Replied Kelty.
That's a good idea.
It was getting late by the time Kelty had finished.
Louis was already in bed asleep and Kelty felt surprisingly tired herself,
Although she really wanted to take her gift to Grandma.
Leave it until tomorrow,
Said Mum.
Grandma could be sleeping by now,
So we shouldn't disturb her in case she is.
Reluctantly Kelty agreed and kissed her Mum goodnight.
Can I make some cakes for Grandma after school tomorrow,
She asked before she went upstairs to bed.
That's an excellent idea,
Agreed Mum,
And Louis can help too.
Sleep well,
Sweetheart.
The next day Kelty hurried home from school.
She went straight into the kitchen and saw her Mum had all the ingredients ready for cake making out on the kitchen table.
Kelty quickly went upstairs and changed out of her school uniform and washed her hands.
Back in the kitchen,
Louis was waiting ready and excited to help.
What are we going to make,
Asked Kelty.
Butterfly cakes,
Said Mum as she passed a muffin tray to Louis who lined it with cupcake cases.
Yummy,
Said Kelty.
What shall I do?
First you need to beat the butter and sugar together until white and fluffy,
Mum said,
Placing 200g of butter and 200g of caster sugar into a large mixing bowl.
With that done,
They added four beaten eggs to the bowl and mixed until combined.
Now slowly add 200g of self-raising flour,
Said Mum,
Helping Kelty whilst trying to stop Louis from sticking his fingers into the cake mixture.
With the flour added,
They spooned the mixture evenly into the cupcake cases.
I've already turned the oven on so it's at the right temperature,
180 degrees Celsius,
Mum said,
Taking the muffin tin and carefully placing it into the hot oven.
Now let's tidy up and then we can make the buttercream icing.
How long will the cakes take to cook,
Asked Kelty.
About 15 minutes,
Said Mum,
Setting the timer on her iPhone and then we have to let them cool before we put the buttercream on them otherwise it will melt.
Right,
Who's going to wash and who's going to dry the dishes?
Me dry,
Shouted Louis,
Excited to be helping.
With the dirty pots cleaned and everything tidied away,
The cakes were taken out of the oven and placed to cool on a wire rack.
They looked a light golden colour and smelt so delicious.
While they are cooling we will make the buttercream icing,
Said Mum,
Getting the ingredients ready.
They each helped to whisk together 200g of softened butter,
400g of icing sugar and a teaspoon of vanilla extract.
With the buttercream ready,
Mum felt the cakes.
Mmm,
Nice and cool,
She said.
Taking a small knife from a drawer,
She began cutting circles from the top of each cake and then slicing the circles in half.
She filled a piping bag with the buttercream icing and,
Using a star nozzle,
Showed Kelty how to pipe the buttercream into the centre of each cake.
And then she showed Louis how to place the two small sponge halves into the buttercream icing to form the wings.
And finally she lightly dusted them with some icing sugar.
The butterfly cakes were finished.
They looked at them with big smiles on their faces.
Grandma is going to love these,
Said Kelty.
Can I eat one now please?
Asked Louis,
Who had been very good not licking his fingers through the whole process.
You can have one after tea,
Said Mum.
Oh,
I can't wait that long,
Said Louis crossly.
Well,
If you and Kelty tidy up quickly,
I'll get on and make tea now,
Said Mum,
Completely understanding why her son was upset.
The cakes really did smell good and she couldn't wait to try one herself.
Dad will be home any minute and I'm sure he'll want a cake too.
Dad came home just as tea was put on the table and they all ate and chatted together.
Then they each tucked into a fresh homemade butterfly cake.
These are delicious,
Said Dad,
Licking the last crumbs from his fingers.
Can I have another one please?
One more,
Said Mum,
And the rest are for Grandma.
Can we take them round to Grandma's now?
Asked Kelty.
I'll call her and see if that's OK,
Said Mum.
But Grandma was already in bed.
She had felt a little better today and had done the laundry and some housework,
Which had made her feel very tired.
Let's leave it until tomorrow after school,
Said Grandma.
I'm going to do another Covid test in the afternoon.
It's been nearly a week,
So I'm hoping to be better any day now.
The next day,
As soon as Kelty arrived home from school,
She changed out of her school uniform and got ready to visit Grandma.
I've made some lemonade to have with the cakes,
Said Mum.
Let's all go round to Grandma's as it's such a lovely sunny afternoon.
We can sit outside in the garden and chat to her from a distance.
Mum packed the butterfly cakes and lemonade into a bag along with some napkins and plastic cups.
Kelty wrapped her ladybird stone in some kitchen towel and Louis put Duggee's lead on him.
They arrived at Grandma's house and were surprised to see her sitting outside in the sunshine.
You look a lot better,
Grandma,
Said Kelty,
Smiling and happy her Grandma hadn't become really,
Really sick.
I tested for Covid and it came out negative,
Said Grandma,
Delighted.
I feel so much better,
Although I still feel tired and don't seem to have as much energy as I normally do.
That's wonderful news,
Said Mum,
But we'll still sit outside so we can enjoy this sunshine and fresh air.
Louis let Duggee off his lead.
The tiny dog was so pleased to see Grandma that he wasted no time in jumping onto her lap and snuggled into her arms.
This makes me feel so much better,
Said Grandma,
Cuddling Duggee,
And seeing all of you too,
My favourite people in the whole world.
We have something else which will make you feel even better,
Said Kelty.
Butterfly cakes and lemonade,
Shouted Louis,
Who couldn't wait to share them with Grandma.
They sat down on the grass a little way away from Grandma and Mum passed the cakes and lemonade around.
Delicious,
Said Grandma,
Smiling at Kelty.
Can you taste some,
Grandma?
Kelty asked.
I'm not quite sure,
Grandma said,
Winking.
Maybe I should have another one,
Just to be certain.
They all laughed,
Thankful that Grandma was feeling much,
Much better.
Kelty gave Grandma the ladybird stone she had painted.
I love it,
Said Grandma,
Brushing away a happy tear from the corner of her eye.
It will make me smile every time I look at it.
After then,
A dark cloud came over them.
I think we should be getting home,
Said Mum,
As she packed everything away into her bag.
It looks like it might rain.
Quick,
Let's go,
Said Louis,
Panicking slightly.
I don't have a coat and I don't like getting wet.
Talking about coats,
Said Grandma,
Why don't we go shopping after school on Monday?
I'm sure I will feel much stronger by then and we can buy your new coats,
She said.
And so it was agreed.
Another couple of days would allow Grandma to get a bit more rest and gain more stamina.
Now,
I must go and lie down,
Said Grandma.
Thank you for all the wonderful surprises and gifts over these past days.
Your thoughtfulness has helped me get through Covid.
I love you all.
We love you more,
Grandma,
They said as they waved goodbye,
All of them thankful that Grandma was feeling much,
Much better.
I hope you enjoyed listening to my story.
Before you go,
I'd like to ask you a question.
What would you do to help someone feel better if they were unwell?
Thanks again for listening and come back soon to hear another story from Grandma.
Bye for now.
