A Dog Called Lucy

My story is about two hairy dogs who help a tiny mouse return to her owner. Enjoy my story as you hear how Lucy meets, and then helps, a tiny mouse. Thank you for listening to my stories and sharing your thoughts with me. I always look forward to reading your comments, and I will reply as soon as possible to each and everyone.

Hello,

My name is Jacqueline and I am a very proud grandma.

I write stories for my grandchildren and I'm very happy to share them with you too.

So settle down,

Make yourself comfortable because my next story is about to begin.

A dog called Lucy A noise woke Lucy from a very good dream.

She opened her eyes and listened.

It was still dark in the house so she knew it wasn't time to get up yet.

But then she heard the noise again.

What was it?

Lucy was a big hairy old English sheepdog and had been sleeping peacefully on her big soft dog bed in the corner of the kitchen.

The room was softly lit by the moon as it shone in through the window,

Allowing Lucy to look around to see what had disturbed her.

Something caught her eye under the kitchen table.

Lucy stood up and moved closer so she could get a better look.

She lowered her head and looked under the table.

There she saw a tiny white mouse scratching around the skirting boards.

What are you doing?

Asked Lucy,

Startling the mouse.

The mouse looked over at Lucy,

Surprised that someone should be up this early in the morning.

So so sorry to disturb you,

Stammered the mouse,

Feeling a little scared of this giant sized dog.

I'm looking for crumbs because I'm really hungry,

She explained in her soft squeaky voice.

Lucy lay down on the floor near the table and rested her head on her paws as she looked at the mouse.

I won't hurt you,

Said Lucy gently,

But why are you in my kitchen looking for food?

I was running away from a cat when I saw a hole in your door,

So I squeezed in here to hide,

Said the mouse.

Why was the cat chasing you?

Asked Lucy,

Fascinated by the story.

I sneaked up on her to eat some food that was next to her paw and she woke up.

She was not at all happy and chased me out of the house through the cat flap into the garden and all the way here.

Well,

You can stay here for a while,

Said Lucy feeling sorry for the mouse.

She may have gone by now,

But I'd rather you are safe.

I'll get you some food.

And Lucy went over to her bed and rummaged around until she found a few biscuits she had been saving for a midnight snack.

She gathered the biscuits carefully in her mouth and took them back to where the table was.

She dropped them on the floor and they rolled a little way under the table.

The mouse looked at the biscuits and then up at Lucy,

A little hesitant to go for the food.

Realizing that the mouse was still scared of her,

Lucy moved away and sat on her bed.

The mouse walked over to the biscuits and nibbled on them.

They tasted so good.

After a few minutes,

Lucy said,

Do you feel better now?

Oh yes,

Thank you,

Said the mouse,

Licking her lips.

That's good,

Said Lucy,

Happy that she had been of help.

The mouse walked slowly towards Lucy.

You're a giant dog,

She said,

Feeling a little braver.

But you seem very kind.

My name's Di.

My name's Lucy and I like to think I'm kind,

Lucy said.

My owner is a lovely lady who gives me everything I need and I like to think others are as happy as I am.

I belong to a little boy who lives in the house with a cat who chased me,

Di said.

I'm normally happy,

But he left the cage door open and that's how I got out.

I felt hungry,

So I ran around the house looking for something to eat.

Then I saw the food by the cat and I couldn't stop myself going for it.

Can you remember where your house is?

Asked Lucy,

Wondering if she could find a way to get Di back to her home.

No,

Said Di sadly.

The cat chased me all over town and I've never been outside before.

I don't know where I am.

Well,

Don't worry.

I'll look after you,

Said Lucy.

Come and sleep with me on my bed.

I have this cosy blanket underneath me and I can keep you warm and safe.

Di was feeling tired after her busy night and felt pleased to have somewhere cosy to sleep.

Without hesitating,

She climbed upon the bed and curled up against Lucy's long fur and fell fast asleep.

A few hours later,

Lucy and Di were woken by the sound of Lucy's owner moving around upstairs.

Quick,

Said Lucy to Di,

My owner is up and about.

Hide under my blanket here and you won't be seen.

Di crawled under the blanket and kept as still as she possibly could.

The door opened and Lucy's owner walked into the kitchen.

Good morning Lucy,

She said cheerfully.

Let's go for a run in the park before I have to go to work.

Lucy jumped out of bed and wagged her tail with excitement.

She loved going for walks but especially loved going for runs in the park.

The owner put Lucy's collar and lead on her pet and they set off.

It was such a beautiful day and Lucy walked slightly ahead of her owner,

Leading the way to the park.

She knew this route extremely well and didn't like to waste a single second getting there.

This park was very popular with dog walkers and Lucy always met her best friend here every morning and early evening as their owners took them for a walk before and after work.

There you go Lucy,

Said her owner as she un-clipped Lucy's lead from her collar.

Enjoy your run.

Lucy ran out onto the open grass,

Feeling so refreshed as the wind blew through her fur.

As she bounded along she heard a familiar bark coming up behind her.

Hi Lucy,

Said a big Afghan hound as he ran up beside her.

Isn't it a lovely day?

Hi Skye,

Said Lucy,

Pleased to see her friend.

How are you today?

The two dogs slowed down and stood together.

I'm not too bad,

Replied Skye,

Although Jim,

My owner's little boy,

Lost his mouse last night and he's not happy this morning.

What is the mouse's name?

Asked Lucy.

Thinking this story sounded very familiar.

She's called Di,

Skye replied.

Why?

Well,

I think I know where she is,

Said Lucy and she told Skye about the visitor she had in the night.

Yes,

I'm sure that's Jim's mouse,

Said Skye gleefully.

The cat is always chasing things and she probably did chase Di out of the house.

What can we do to reunite Di with Jim?

Asked Lucy.

Let's go for a run and think about it,

Replied Skye and the two dogs ran across the grass as fast as their legs could carry them.

Eventually they stopped running to catch their breath.

I've got an idea,

Announced Lucy.

Tell me,

Said Skye,

Excited.

This evening,

Before my owner gets me ready to come to the park,

I'll get Di to hide in my fur,

Explained Lucy.

Then,

When you and I meet up for our run and are far enough away from our owners,

Di can climb for me onto you and hide in your fur.

Then you can take her back home to Jim.

What a great idea,

Said Skye.

Yes,

I'm sure that will work.

Just then the two dogs heard their owners calling them and they knew it was time to go home.

Running back across the grass,

They quickly said goodbye to each other as their leads were attached to their collars and they were led away in opposite directions out of the park.

Arriving back in the kitchen,

Lucy had a drink from her water bowl and gobbled up some biscuits her owner had put down for her,

Making sure to save a few for the mouse,

Who was still hiding under the blanket.

Time for me to go to work,

Said Lucy's owner,

Picking up a banana and her handbag.

Behave while I'm gone.

And she patted her pet's head before heading out of the front door.

Lucy went over to her bed and nudged the lump in the blanket with her nose.

Hey,

Squeaked Di,

I was enjoying a very good dream before you woke me.

Oh,

Sorry,

Said Lucy,

I just wanted you to know I was back.

That's okay,

Said Di,

I disturbed you last night so we're even now.

How was your run?

It was very good,

Said Lucy,

Lying on the floor in front of her bed.

I met with my friend Skye and it seems that you two know each other.

Yes,

Exclaimed Di.

Skye lives with us.

Jim loves him and often brings him up to look at me in my cage.

Oh,

I miss Jim and Skye.

Well,

Skye and I have a plan to reunite you with Jim,

Said Lucy,

And she explained the idea to Di.

That sounds a master plan,

Exclaimed Di.

I can't wait.

I'm excited too,

Agreed Lucy,

But before then,

Come and have some biscuits.

You must be hungry again by now.

Skye and Di spent the day sleeping and chatting.

You have a very strange name,

Said Lucy to Di.

Is it short for something?

It's short for Diamond,

Di explained.

When Jim brought me home,

He said my eyes sparkle so much they reminded him of diamonds.

Oh yes,

I can see that,

Said Lucy,

Noticing Di's eyes sparkling in the sunlight.

Diamond is a big name for a small mouse.

Di suits you better.

I agree,

Said Di,

But Jim likes to call me Diamond.

Well I'll call you Di while you're staying with me,

Said Lucy,

And the two new friends chatted about strange names humans give to their pets.

The two animals were taking a nap when Lucy's owner arrived home from work.

Di quickly began to crawl under the blanket so that she couldn't be seen.

No,

Said Lucy,

Stopping her,

Not under the blanket this time.

Crawl up onto me and hide under my fur.

We always go straight out for a walk when my owner comes home.

And remember,

We've got to meet up with Skye and he will get you back to Jim.

Swiftly Di climbed up Lucy's hairy legs and then went to climb up to her neck.

No,

Not there,

Said Lucy.

My collar goes around my neck and my owner will see you.

Hide around my belly and that way you definitely won't be seen.

Di crawled between the fur on Lucy's belly and gripped on tight,

Just as the owner came into the kitchen.

Come on Lucy,

She said,

Putting her bag down on the floor.

Let's take you for a run in the park.

And she put Lucy's collar and lead on before walking out of the front door.

They arrived at the park and as soon as Lucy's lead was removed she bounded out across the grass.

She ran around and around looking for Skye,

But couldn't see him anywhere.

Suddenly she heard a squeaky voice.

Please stop!

Begged Di.

I can't hold on for much longer.

Lucy stopped running and stood still,

While Di crawled up from Lucy's belly onto her back.

That's better,

She said.

Now where's Skye?

I don't know,

Said Lucy,

Looking around and feeling slightly worried.

He's normally here at this time.

I'll walk around again.

Lucy walked around the large area of grass,

But couldn't see Skye anywhere.

She was about to give up and go back to her owner when Di shouted,

Here he comes,

He's behind you.

Lucy turned around as Skye came bounding up.

He only just stopped himself from running into his friend as he skidded to a halt.

Gasping for breath,

He said,

I'm sorry for not being here earlier,

But my owner was late home from work today.

That's okay,

Said Lucy,

You're here now.

Hello,

Said Di,

Standing up on her hind legs on top of Lucy's back.

It's good to see you,

Skye.

Hello,

Said Skye.

It's really good to see you too,

Di.

Jim has not stopped crying since you left.

He will be so pleased to see you.

At that moment Lucy heard her owner call her name.

Oh,

Quickly,

Said Lucy.

I have to go now.

Skye,

Move close to me so that Di can climb onto your back.

Skye stood as close as he could to Lucy and Di climbed carefully from one dog to the other.

Remember to climb under Skye's belly and hide there in his fur,

Lucy reminded Di.

I will,

Said Di.

Shouted Di and Skye together as Lucy took off across the park back to her owner.

After dinner that night Lucy curled up beside her owner and reflected over her day with Di.

She had enjoyed spending time with the cute and friendly mouse but felt a little sad that they would never see each other again.

Lucy's owner ruffled Lucy's head lovingly and Lucy felt a warm glow within her.

Feeling sleepy she snuggled against her owner.

Just before she closed her eyes she thought about Di one last time and knew that the tiny mouse was now safe and happy with Jim and would never leave her cage again.

One of my Ocs is named Dice and one is Card. Strange names, right? (A OC is a character fans make) they are both dragons. Card is red black white and blue and Dice is black and white (Some people call them Dye bc wn) Card’s pronouns are She/Her and Dice’s prounouns are They/It. Yes The name is Terrien. It’s a cat and it’s ours and I have another cat but its name is not old it’s Nancy and a third cat called strike that’s a bit odd to but yeah and I have 14 fishes that’s a lot isn’t it, anyway this was amazing I think it’s incredible I do like the name Lucy
