Sleeplessness at night can arise from fear of change. We balk at entering the unconscious state because we are holding on too rigidly to the status quo. Insomnia can make us irritable the next day as well. Better to embrace our sleeplessness and just meditate. This helps us connect with our true self and brings peace. No wonder the Sufis described sleepless nightime, as a University, where we can clear blocks, surrender and open to a higher consciousness.

I always think lack of sleep,

When we can't sleep,

It's like the psyche's on red alert,

It's like a siren blaring,

Danger,

Danger,

Don't surrender,

Don't relax,

Stay up out of the unconscious,

Don't deepen.

I would go through periods of intense sleeplessness every time just before a major surrender.

What I did finally was I just took them as nights of meditation.

You just put up with it,

Embrace it,

Night of meditation.

Sufis,

The night time is the university of the Sufi.

Our thoughts go round and round,

We get so disgusted that sometimes we just surrender.

At night time with our thoughts,

We see in stark relief what we're thinking.

It's good,

It's the university of the Sufi.

It's just,

It's kind of lonesome and it's hard work and you feel kind of weird all day.

It's just kind of a given.
