Alan Watts once said, “Allowed anxiety is no longer anxiety.” I believe this to be deeply true, but to put this saying into practice is much easier said than done. It may even be one of the hardest things to do, to actually, genuinely, allow my anxiety to be here. I may attempt to accept it in order to get rid of it, but then, I am not truly accepting it.
This five-session course is meant to help you realize the true meaning of Allowing, of Openness, and thus move into a new relationship with “anxiety" in which the word may not even make sense anymore, or find a whole new definition. You may already know the path through anxiety lies in its acceptance, but your body may not believe it yet. I’ll share my training and experience in the worlds of psychology, philosophy, and spirituality, and my own personal experience with crippling social anxiety, to help your body believe and feel, that Allowing is the way.
In the first three sessions, you will receive a core message, an experiential practice based on that message, and a takeaway lesson to play with in your life. And in the final two sessions, we will focus on practices to help you extend this course to daily living.
I hope you join me and please feel free to share any and all of your thoughts and questions in the course comments. Thank you for being here.
Charles Freligh has a PhD in Clinical Psychology and years of experience as a psychotherapist, college professor, and teacher of meditation and mindfulness. His goal is to combine understanding from the worlds of psychology, philosophy, and spirituality, in order to provide you with a unique training to customize to your own life.
Each year, he travels to a Zen Buddhist monastery to train in meditation, not because he considers himself “Buddhist," but simply because this provides an optimal setting for deep, focused contemplative practice.
Charles is here to help you become what you already are, mostly deeply, under the surface. He views you as the expert and stands beside you on an exploration into who you really are....

New Snow
Let’s begin the course through the use of a visual metaphor that illustrates both how we get stuck in certain ruts of thinking and behavior, as well as how we can become liberated from them. This metaphor will serve as a theme for the remainder of the course.

Come To Your Senses
In each moment, it is possible to notice the filtering of life into My Story, and subsequently to drop beneath Story into pure Sense. In the realm of pure Sense, nothing is wrong (or right), it just Is. Let’s practice dropping through Story into Sense through each of the sensory doors by practicing a technique inspired by Daniel Siegel's "Wheel of Awareness."

Knowing Vs. Believing
“Allowed anxiety is no longer anxiety.” There is a fundamental difference between instrumentally “allowing” a feeling in order to get rid of it, and actually allowing that feeling to be here. And since the feeling lives inside of you, “it” knows if you are being genuine in your acceptance or if you have an ulterior motive, and it responds accordingly.
Let’s apply this understanding to your life and change the fundamental meaning of the words "anxiety" and "discomfort."

Just Practice: Come To Your Senses
Here's a chance to just practice the "Come to Your Senses" method. It may be helpful to repeat this session to develop the muscle of psychological openness.

Extend to Daily Life: Resetting the Scale
In the final session, I will walk you through an easy-to-remember five-step technique for extending this course to your daily life. I call it "zeroing," and this will help you flex the muscle of psychological openness again and again throughout the day.

My anxiety is a constant companion, and I often feel overwhelmed. Slowly down, making space, zeroing out my assumptions, allowing for new snow to fall … these are transformative ideas. Thank you, Charles. I will definitely revisit this course.
