This meditation was inspired by the teaching of the amazing Don Miguel Ruiz. His teaching, in his book The Fifth Agreement, the concept of which I have used here, was profound. So profound it made me see everyone with so much compassion and understanding and myself with so much clarity I wanted to use it in a meditation. This meditation allows you to understand why you should never take anything personally. That you are the creator of your own life. That you are an artist.

Welcome to the movie of your life meditation.

I want you to close your eyes and make sure you are sitting in a comfortable seat.

Let your palms rest on your legs.

Making sure your spine is straight and move around in your seat until you get it right.

I want you to take in some deep breaths.

I want you to concentrate on your breath as it flows in through your nostrils and out through your nostrils.

Feel the cool air on your inhale and then the warmth of the air on your exhale.

Follow your breath a couple of times.

Now I want you to imagine you are going into a movie theatre.

You look up as you enter,

Surprised at the title,

The story of your life.

You go in and sit down next to the only person in the theatre and you realise it is you.

As you look onto the screen ahead of you,

You realise that you are watching your life.

You as the main character and your friends and family as a supporting cast.

You are on there as you see yourself and you watch as the self next to you seems to be directing the action.

You are the director,

The main actor,

The producer and the audience.

You are a bit weirded out by all this and you head into the next theatre and you sit down next to the only person there and you realise it is your mum.

Except it's not really.

She doesn't look the way she did in your movie and she doesn't act the same.

She is saying and doing things your mum would never say or do.

You look at her and you realise this is the way your mum sees herself.

You enter her movie on the screen and you don't look like you.

You don't act like you do and you are not behaving the way you normally do.

You realise that this is the way your mum sees you.

You are so freaked out you leave the room and you go to another theatre.

There sits your beloved.

They don't look the same or act the same either and your part in their story isn't the same as their part in yours.

And suddenly you realise that we are only ever watching our own movies.

That our lives and the way they work are our creations.

You are an artist.

An amazing artist with the power to create anything you desire.

And if you don't like the way your movie is going you can create again.

You also begin to understand why what's perfectly acceptable behaviour in your movie is not in someone else's.

And you realise that you don't ever have to take anything personally.

It's the way others see you and not the way you really are that's affecting them.

You are just playing your role in their movie and your role is not working the way they wanted.

But that's not your fault.

The mind simply can't understand why things are the way they are.

And why people say things they say and do the things they do.

When you are so intent on your story being true it's hard to imagine that there is any other truth.

We are only ever watching our own movie.

With this understanding you can now be more empathetic and understanding to those around you.

In their movie what they are saying is true and you don't have to take it personally.

I want to give you some time now to sit with that knowledge and just breathe.

I will let you know when it's time to finish.

So just sit and enjoy the movie of your life and all that you have created.

Slowly now coming back to your body.

Wiggle your fingers and toes.

Start to get the sensation of being back in your body.

Notice the tingles on the insides of your hands and trace it up your body as you inhale and exhale.

Now slowly open your eyes.

Namaste.

A truly awesome concept and perspective. It carries forward the position that your perception is your reality. And the movie theater visualization adds another level of understanding to this truth.
