Hey there!
I know you're probably wide awake right now and super frustrated about it,
Or maybe you're feeling a little alone.
I used to have insomnia,
So I know how lonely it can feel,
So I just wanted to sit with you here for a bit.
There's no pressure to sleep.
We're just going to get cozy on the couch and talk about why it's not a big deal if you can't fall asleep,
And we'll just enjoy relaxing here for a bit and resting while I help you feel a little less afraid or maybe just a little less annoyed about the fact that you can't sleep.
I don't know if you've considered this,
But it's actually perfectly okay to be awake right now.
In fact,
Just take a second to get comfy wherever you are and try saying that to yourself.
It's okay to be awake right now.
Take a deep breath if you want.
I'm going to do that with my eyes closed.
It's okay to be awake right now.
You know,
Sleep isn't the most important thing in the world,
And the funny thing is when you stop trying to sleep and making sleep be such a big deal,
It actually ends up coming to you.
It's actually kind of funny because even after having insomnia for so long,
Even now that I've gotten rid of it,
I don't even care if I sleep.
It makes no difference to me,
And I used to care so much it was exhausting.
And I think the reason that I'm able to not make sleeping such a huge thing anymore is also because I stopped taking my life so seriously.
So whatever I have going on tomorrow,
To me,
My mentality is like,
Whatever happens,
Happens.
I'm going to do my best with whatever the day brings.
So it actually doesn't matter if I sleep tonight.
You kind of just got to laugh at yourself over the whole thing.
Like,
I don't care what it is you've got going on tomorrow.
You're going to show up the best you can,
And it's going to be fine.
I used to joke about how all I needed to do to get rid of my insomnia was,
Like,
Move to the opposite time zone.
Like,
Move to Europe or Australia or somewhere like that.
Because,
Boom,
Sleep problem solved.
Different time zone.
I'm awake during this time anyway.
But,
Really,
That's not necessary.
Because there's this misconception that being awake at night is a bad thing.
Take a look around you right now.
Where are you right now?
Just look around.
You're just chilling at home,
Right?
What's so bad about that?
Like,
Literally,
You're just at home.
You're just chilling.
You're good.
In fact,
How about you take a deep breath right now and say,
It's okay to rest even if I'm not asleep.
It's okay to rest even if I'm not asleep.
Take another deep breath and let's say,
I'm allowed to just exist.
It's not so serious to be awake in the middle of the night.
You know,
One thing I really like about the night time,
It's like time doesn't exist.
It's like everything pauses.
There's just the street lights outside,
The moon,
The stars,
And it's this unique kind of time.
And it's like,
Oh,
I'm awake.
I'm not asleep.
It's this kind of quiet that,
To me,
Feels really soft and peaceful.
It has like its own quality to it.
I find it quite magical.
Mostly because no one can bother me.
Everybody else is asleep,
Right?
And I don't have to do anything right now.
I get to just be.
I get to just exist as a human.
We've gotten so used to always doing things that just simply being has become unfamiliar.
But when you can just be,
Just exist with yourself,
With nowhere to go,
Nothing to do,
No one to impress,
Like right now,
There's kind of something special about existing in this blank space.
And I know how it can feel when you feel like you're the only person in the world who's awake and can't sleep right now.
But there's plenty of people who are awake with you.
If you want,
Actually go comment below so you can let others know that they're also not the only one who's up right now.
I mean,
Think about it.
Right now,
I don't care where you live.
I don't care how big or small your town is.
There's people that are awake everywhere.
And I live in one of the biggest cities in the world.
And hell,
If I go outside right now,
There will be someone out there no matter what time of night it is.
There's also plenty of people working right now who do the night shift.
And I don't know about you,
But I'd much rather be chilling at home right now,
Even if I'm awake,
Than out working somewhere.
There's also this sort of misperception that we're supposed to,
Like,
Be asleep during a certain time frame.
This is something I think about all the time.
Like,
Why are we supposed to be asleep right now?
Sure,
It's dark,
Blah,
Blah,
Blah,
Science,
Whatever.
But it's also kind of arbitrary.
My dog,
For example,
This is Cammie.
She eats dinner at,
Like,
Two or three in the morning.
She's,
Like,
Prancing around like it's brunch time.
No shame.
She's got no schedule.
She's just doing her own thing.
So maybe your body's just doing its own thing tonight.
And that's okay,
Too.
It doesn't mean that anything's wrong.
And on top of that,
I always love to think about how right now,
In the opposite hemisphere,
Billions of people are out and about because for them it's daytime.
So somewhere right now,
Someone is watching a funny video and cracking up over it.
Someone is burning popcorn.
Someone's dancing in their kitchen.
So much life is happening everywhere.
And even if you feel like you're physically alone,
You never are.
The feeling of separateness is an illusion.
You came from somewhere.
How did we all get here?
I think we're really all connected.
And the feeling of separateness is just our mind forgetting the truth of who we are.
Imagine right now that you're connected to the whole planet,
The Earth.
It's not something you can see with your eyes,
But when you pay attention,
You can feel it.
So let's feel that right now.
I'm going to close my eyes and I'm just going to imagine,
What would it feel like to be one with the whole universe?
So go ahead and close your eyes and imagine this with me right now.
What would it feel like to be one with the whole universe?
With the oceans?
With the mountains?
With the forests?
Just close your eyes and tap into that.
What would that feel like to be one with the planet?
To be one with nature?
To be one with the whales,
The dolphins,
The pandas,
With any animal you want.
How cool would that be?
And the fact that you can consider it and feel what that would be like to be connected to everything that exists,
That means you are connected to it.
And even though it's happening in your imagination,
Notice how your body responds.
That calm,
That lightness,
That sense of relief,
The connection.
That's real.
I take my imagination seriously and I use it with intention.
Because if you're going to imagine anything,
You might as well imagine the best case scenario and imagine everything working out for you all of the time.
Let's do that right now.
What would it feel like right now to not have a care in the world?
How awesome would that be?
What would it feel like to not care about whether you sleep tonight?
Close your eyes and just take a deep breath.
And consider how incredible it would be to feel that way.
To not care if you slept tonight or not.
What would it feel like if all the problems in your life just vanished out of thin air?
What would it feel like if all of a sudden everything was going way better for you than you could have ever imagined?
What would that feel like?
So just stay with that feeling.
You don't have to solve anything tonight.
You're allowed to just be here.
Just exist.
And maybe sleep comes and maybe it doesn't.
But either way,
You've already given your body something even more powerful.
A moment of peace.
Just know that I'm here with you.
And so are a thousand others who needed this exact moment of stillness tonight.
