Welcome,
And I hope that each one of you will come to find peace within yourself.
Today,
I'd like to talk just a little bit about how you can work at conquering anxiety and deal with stress at the same time.
I know that it seems like in today's world we have so many things that cause stress and anxiety.
We have this COVID-19 pandemic that just keeps going on and on.
We have concerns about Russia invading Ukraine and the impact that's had globally on the energy sector which impacts all of us.
There have been rumblings that Russia might actually use nuclear weapons.
Many areas of the world have been affected by crazy extremes of climate,
Droughts in some areas and floods in others,
Hurricanes and typhoons,
Tornadoes and forest fires,
Political unrest and social upheaval,
Problems worldwide with the economy,
Runaway inflation and hints of a recession.
So we have plenty of things that we could be anxious about.
What I know from history and what I know from my own experience is that all these things will pass.
They always have.
They always will.
What I also know is that we are often the biggest factor in our own anxiety and stress.
We ramp ourselves up with our words and with our thoughts.
Words have power,
Real power,
And thoughts have power.
And what we need to do is harness that power so it benefits us.
What we need to do is believe in ourselves.
Let me give just a little example.
In the children's story,
The Little Engine That Could,
The small train agrees to try to pull a large train over the mountain.
It's an impossible task but the little engine starts out and he begins a mantra saying,
I think I can,
I think I can,
I think I can,
I think I can.
And by gosh he brings it up to the top of the mountain and while it gets harder he keeps on saying his mantra until he's over the top.
And with his goal accomplished he changes what he says to,
I thought I could,
I thought I could.
And if you think this is just a children's story you couldn't be more wrong.
Renowned life coach Tony Robbins said,
The power of positive thinking is the ability to generate a feeling of certainty in yourself when nothing in the environment supports you.
That little engine believed he could and so he did.
Our words and our thoughts are so powerful.
You have to use them to your advantage to defeat anxiety,
To conquer stress,
To deal with problems in your life.
When I had multiple strokes by the age of 30 and was told I could never walk again,
I could have just taken the doctors at their word and given up.
If I had had to spend my life in a wheelchair I would have dealt with it but I had to try,
I had to try.
I had to think that I could,
That I could walk even though they said I couldn't.
And if I just believed and worked hard and now all these years later I walk seven miles a day every day and you can conquer the hardships in your life too.
Close your eyes now and let's get in touch with our breath.
It doesn't matter if you're sitting,
Lying down or standing.
The only thing that matters is that you're comfortable.
Take a deep breath and slowly let it go.
Just breathe normally and let's scan our body as we begin to relax.
Relax your neck and shoulders.
Relax your arms and your hands.
Let go of any tension in your chest and belly.
Relax your face.
Unscrunch your eyebrows.
Feel yourself getting heavier with each breath.
Relax your legs and your feet and as you begin to relax let's concentrate more on our breath.
I said before that our breath is like a river.
It flows in and out.
Just inhale and exhale slowly and notice your breath as it flows in as it flows out one breath at a time.
Continue to breathe at your normal pace and don't force anything.
Just continue to follow your breath and listen to my voice.
Words are powerful.
Words are powerful.
The power of your thoughts and your words can shape your entire life.
Let me say that again.
The power of your thoughts and your words can shape your entire life.
By altering your thoughts and altering your words you can have a dramatic effect on your life.
It takes work and it takes time but I know you can do it.
Each one of you has that power just idling inside you.
You just have to tap into it.
First of all you have to ignore what other people say about you or think about you.
They don't know you.
To become more positive you have to ignore negative elements in your life.
That means negative people too.
You need to look at the way you interact with others and with yourself.
Your words mean something.
They are powerful so stop using negative words.
Stop talking about how stressed you are,
How fat you are,
How stupid you are,
Or how broke you are.
You have to get rid of negativity because it only makes things worse.
Negative words and negative thoughts only serve to drag you down.
Example,
If you're always saying that you're too fat,
That your clothes don't fit,
That you're just a blimp and on and on you make it very difficult for anything to change.
Your own words defeat you.
If we start out using positive words when talking with yourself or with others and use positive phrases and say them out loud if it helps.
I can do this.
I will make it.
I know I can accomplish this.
I'm making positive strides and the like.
Thoughts carry weight.
Thoughts create your reality.
When you fill your mind with negative thoughts it affects your mind and your brain releases chemicals that cause all the symptoms of anxiety.
Rapid heart rate problems,
Concentrating,
Restlessness,
Feeling fatigued,
Trouble sleeping and so many more.
If you teach yourself to put a positive spin on things,
That's a plus.
If you begin to use positive words and positive phrases in your language,
That's a plus.
If you do your best to remove negativity from your thoughts and words,
That's a plus.
And all these pluses add up.
For the most part,
We can't change all the distressing things going on in the world.
But what we can control is how we react to those things.
By keeping a positive attitude and by keeping our words and thoughts positive,
We can change our world.
We can change our perspective.
And we can make our lives better and more free from stress and anxiety.
We only have to try.
We have to think that we can.
Now as we come to a close,
Open your eyes and come back into the room.
Wiggle your fingers and toes and stretch and feel how good it is to be alive.
Take in a deep breath through your nose and let it out through your mouth,
Letting it aside.
You are ready to move back into your day,
A little calmer and more joyful than before.
I hope this has been a beneficial and calming session.
Till next time,
I think you can.
