This classic and gently humorous tale was written by the English novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and published in installments between 1851 and 1853 in 'Household Words', the weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens. 'Cranford' has been described as a collection of sketches, affectionately portraying people and customs that were already becoming old-fashioned. Gaskell based her stories on the town of Knutsford in Cheshire, UK, where she grew up. The novel became more and more popular and the 20th century saw many adaptations for stage and T.V. including one immensely popular one by the BBC in 2007, starring Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton and Julia Mackenzie. Enjoy! As the chapters are released here, I'll compile a playlist. In the meantime, for more gently humorous writing, type 'Diary of a Nobody' into Insight Timer's search option and discover the playlist of a different, but equally delightful book, set in Victorian London and written by Charles and Weedon Grossmith.
