This is part of a five-part exploration of the vayus,
The five movements of prana described in the yogic tradition.
Pradhana can be understood as life force or vital energy.
While Vayu literally means wind.
Referring here to the different ways this energy moves within us.
In this session we explore Samana Vayu.
The balancing and integrating current,
And discover how this ancient teaching can help us understand the way we digest,
Assimilate,
And find our center amid the experiences of everyday life.
So settle in and let's begin.
And Vayu essentially is,
It translates to energy or it translates to life force.
And Samana Vayu it translates to the balancing life force.
There's an old story about a lamp maker.
A lamp maker who lived in a mountain village.
People would travel for hours to buy his lamps because they were known for one thing.
Their flames never flickered.
No matter how windy,
No matter how cold the nights became.
The lamps glowed with this soft,
With this steady warmth.
One evening.
A young traveler visited his workshop and asked him,
How do your lamps burn so steadily?
Everyone else's flames dance and sputter.
The lampmaker smiled and handed him a newly crafted lantern.
Hold it,
" he said.
The traveller noticed something immediately.
Unlike other lanterns that rattled or that felt uneven.
This one felt perfectly centered.
Weight balanced.
Glass aligned.
And the wick straight.
It's not the flame that's special,
" the lamp-maker said.
It's the center.
And when the center is steady The flame is steady.
In that simple line,
There is the whole wisdom of Samana Vayu.
Samana,
Are you?
Meaning the balancing energy.
Because this is what happens in our own bodies,
This is what happens in our own minds.
When the center of our being,
The solar plexus,
The belly,
The inner fire,
When that is calm and steady,
Everything else studies.
Our breath deepens,
Our mind settles,
Our emotions digest and thoughts stop pulling us in 10 different directions.
But when that center is off.
When life pulls us outward into many ways.
That inner flame it flickers.
We feel scattered.
We feel overwhelmed.
We are unable to digest what the day brings.
Samana value.
Samana vayu is also known as the digestive fire.
Samana Vayu.
It is that intelligence that brings everything inward again.
It gathers the pieces,
Balances the system.
And it helps that inner flame burn steadily.
Just like the lantern.
When the center is aligned,
Everything else finds its place.
So what exactly is Samana Vayu?
Samarvayu is that balancing,
That digesting,
That integrating current of energy.
And it lives in your solar plexus,
Right at that center of your body,
Just behind the navel.
And I like to think of it as,
It's that energy that says,
Let me take what's useful.
Let me release what isn't.
And let me bring everything back to the center.
Its movement,
The movement of this energy is inward.
It gathers from the edges of the body towards the navel.
Like a warm inward hug that gathers scattered energy and brings it to your center.
Samanavayu,
How does it show up in real life?
You ever had one of those days where your mind is all over the place?
You start three tasks,
You finish none and you are feeling completely frazzled.
And that is low samana.
Your energy is scattered.
Or maybe you're stuck in indecision.
Even unable to make those small decisions.
Should I pick this outfit?
Should I pick this one?
Should I go out?
Should I stay home?
Should I reply?
Should I ignore?
When Samana is weak,
It's hard to digest options.
Everything feels confusing.
Or what about emotional heaviness?
Something happens.
Someone says something sharp.
Oh,
A situation feels off.
And hours later you still feel it in your stomach.
Undigested Emotion.
Samana has not yet worked it out.
On the flip side.
Think of a time when you felt clear,
When you felt centered,
When you felt grounded.
You either ate something nourishing or you stayed present.
Or your boundaries,
They felt natural.
You knew what you wanted and you knew exactly what you didn't want.
And that's.
.
.
Strong Samana.
And this energy,
It shows up every time you feel balanced,
Every time you feel centered,
You feel clear,
You feel confident,
You feel collected,
You feel emotional steady.
That's when Sabana Vayu is strong.
It's your inner digestive fire.
And it includes Mental and Emotional Digestion also.
So how do we strengthen this energy how do we strengthen this balancing energy or this digestive fire Simple ways.
Bring your hands to your belly and breathe slowly.
That intention itself is one of the easiest and most effective ways to bring your energy inward.
Hands on your belly and breathe slowly.
Secondly,
Stop multitasking.
This energy,
Samana,
This balancing energy,
It loves single focus.
After Meals.
Sit just for one minute before the shingabee.
Let your body digest.
Give your body some time to digest.
When you feel overwhelmed,
Ask yourself.
What is it that I really need to digest?
What are thoughts I need to digest?
What are feelings I need to digest?
What are emotions I need to digest?
When you feel overwhelmed,
Ask yourself,
What is it that I really need to digest?
Throughout the day.
Between doing things.
Create those small pauses.
Those small pauses,
Those transitions,
They help the nervous system to integrate.
Tiny ship.
These tiny shifts are very powerful.
So let your energy gather,
Let your breath slow down,
Let your center become warm and bright again.
And simply let Samanavayu do what it naturally does.
Gado Balansal.
Bring you home to yourself.
Thank you for listening.
