This meditation is inspired by The Artist's Way,
Week 2.
Recovering a sense of identity.
Make yourself comfortable.
And let the body settle.
Close your eyes if that feels right.
And take a slope that thin.
And breathe out.
Another breath in.
And be thou.
Feel the support beneath you.
Feel the breath moving naturally.
And for the few moments.
Imagine all the voices that tell you who you are.
Imagine all the voices that tell you who you are.
The Voice of Responsibility.
The Voice of Expectation.
The voice that says you should.
You must.
People need you.
Be sensible.
Don't disappoint anyone.
Don't change too much.
You do not need to fight these voices.
Just notice them.
And imagine that slowly the volume begins to lower.
Not Disappear.
Just Soften.
And beneath all those voices perhaps there is another one.
Quieter.
Your own.
Maybe it says,
I miss this.
I want more time.
I want to make something.
I won't do this.
I want to learn.
I want to go somewhere.
I want to try.
You don't need to justify what it says.
Just listen.
Now imagine yourself standing at the doorway of a room.
This room represents your life.
Inside the room are all the things that are already occupying your time.
Responsibility Relationships.
Whoa.
Commitments.
Habits,
Obligations.
And perhaps you noticed that some things belong there.
They matter deeply.
But perhaps some things.
.
.
Have expanded beyond their rightful size.
Someone else's crisis.
Someone else's expectation,
Someone else's timetable,
Someone else's fear.
And perhaps there are parts of you that have been pushed into the corners.
Curiosity.
3.
The best.
Creativity.
Adventure Silence.
Ask gently.
What needs a little more room?
What needs a little more room?
Do not force an answer.
What needs a little more loom.
Perhaps a world of yours,
Or an image.
Or simply a feeling.
Now ask.
What needs a little less though?
What needs a little less room.
Again,
No judgement,
Just noticing.
What needs a little less room.
Now imagine drawing a gentle circle around yourself.
Not a wall.
A Boundary Inside this circle are your time.
Your attention.
Your creative life.
Your right to listen to yourself.
You can love people outside the circle.
You can care.
You can help.
But you do not have to abandon yourself.
In order to love someone else.
Silently say,
My Time Matters.
My attention matters.
My needs.
Are allowed to exist.
My Creativity deserves protection.
Now imagine someone asking something of you.
Nothing dramatic.
Just something that normally causes you to abandon your own plans.
And imagine pausing.
Breathe in.
And saying gently.
I can't do that right now.
I can't do that right now.
Notice what happens.
Perhaps guilt appears.
Let it be there.
Guilt is not always evidence that you are doing something wrong.
Sometimes guilt,
Is simply the sensation of doing something differently.
And quietly say,
I can disappoint an expectation.
Without abandoning myself.
Now bring to mind something you enjoy,
Something simple.
Walking,
Reading,
Painting,
Cooking,
Dancing,
Whatever comes.
Imagine giving yourself a small pocket of time for this week.
Not someday,
This week.
Perhaps 20 minutes,
Perhaps one hour.
You are not asking permission,
You are listening.
Take a note of that.
And imagine the dough slightly ajar.
The Door of Possibility.
You do not need to throw it wide open.
Just leave it.
Slightly ajar.
Something new may be waiting on the outside.
A new interest.
An invitation,
An ideal.
A Coincidence A Possibility You do not need to decide what it means.
Simply say.
I am willing.
To stay curious.
And now the turn to this moment.
Notice one sound.
One sensation.
One place where your body touches the surface that you are resting on.
Attention brings you home.
This moment.
This bed.
This life.
And quietly the pea.
I am allowed to pay attention.
To my own life.
I am allowed.
To discover what I prefer.
I am allowed to protect what is growing in me.
I am allowed to become more fully myself.
And take one final,
Deeper breath in.
Breathe out slowly.
Feel your hands.
Feel your feet.
And whenever you are ready,
If your eyes were closed,
Gently open your eyes.
