Welcome to this gentle meditation on compassion.
Find a quiet place to sit or lie down.
A space that is just for you.
Perhaps it's a special room in your home,
Sitting in your favourite chair.
Or a sun-drenched place in the middle of your garden.
Maybe it's by the ocean,
With the sound of the waves breaking on the shore.
Wherever you are,
Make sure you feel comfortable and warm and won't be disturbed.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in.
Hold it for a moment.
Then gently let it go.
Breathe in once more slowly.
Hold it for a moment.
Then let it go with a soft,
Deep sigh.
Then gently close your eyes.
I have just three things to teach.
Simplicity.
Patience.
Compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Words by Lau Tu.
Compassion is a beautiful emotion.
It is a gentle voice that reminds us to be kind to ourselves.
However,
Most of us are brought up to show compassion for others,
To be kind and caring.
We learn to give love to others and accept the love that is given to us in return.
But very often we forget or actually don't know how to love ourselves.
Loving ourselves isn't always easy.
In a society where we are considered selfish if we push ourselves first.
We learn to put the needs of others before our own.
We are often critical of ourselves when we make mistakes or fail at something.
We set ourselves such high standards.
Society doesn't recognise those who fail.
But we forget that it is through our mistakes that we grow.
It is how we learn.
It is how we forgive.
It is how we heal.
Perhaps showing compassion towards ourselves may be the first step in our own healing.
Sit softly now.
And if you would like to,
Place your hand on your heart.
Breathe in compassion.
Breathe in forgiveness.
Breathe in love.
Let go of judgment.
Let go of criticism.
Allow yourself to be vulnerable.
Feel the love within you.
Feel the beating of your heart.
Feel its warmth.
Feel its love embrace you.
Accept where you are now.
No judgement.
No blame.
No criticism.
Just gentle acceptance.
Just gentle compassion.
Begin to see yourself as the beautiful person that you are.
Sit in the beauty of acceptance.
Allow it to flow through your body.
I don't know what to do.
Know that you are whole and perfect,
Just as you are.
Be gentle with yourself.
Allow yourself to begin to feel forgiveness.
For all the times that you have believed that you are not enough.
The times when life has felt too hard.
The times when you felt that nothing was going right.
The times when you felt small and broken.
Give yourself the gift of compassion.
Know that you are more than enough.
You are an amazing,
Beautiful,
Beloved child of the universe.
A divine spark lives within you.
You deserve to be here.
And you deserve love.
Begin to feel the peace within your heart.
Slowly breathe in this peace.
Slowly,
Breathing kindness.
Slowly,
Breathe in tenderness.
Slowly.
Breathe in love.
Feel love and empathy surround you.
Feel it fill you up.
Feel this love spread through every single cell.
Feel it start to flow from the top of your head.
Feel it filtered down your face and neck.
And into your arms and fingers.
Feel them tingling with this love.
Feel it softly fill your chest,
Then flow down gently into your belly.
Feel the warmth that it leaves behind.
Feel it flow down your back.
Into your legs.
And then to the tips of your toes.
Feel yourself full of love and compassion.
Accept others for their uniqueness and accept yourself for all that you are.
Rumi once said,
In this earth.
In this soil.
In this pure field.
Let's not plant any seed other than the seeds of compassion and love.
Keep your hands on your heart.
And slowly breathe.
Feel the warmth of your hands caress your heart.
And the love in your heart.
Caress all of you in turn.
Find the peace you're longing for.
And feel the light of compassion fill up every cell in your body.
You are beautiful and whole.
You are light and the essence of the world.
Feel the arms of the universe envelop you and shower you with love.
Feel the peace.
Feel the kindness.
Kindness.
Kindness.
And finally,
Feel compassion.
The very essence of our being.
And when you are ready.
Slowly open your eyes.
