Find a position that feels okay for now.
You don't have to optimize it,
Just somewhere that can hold you for a little while.
If you're sitting,
Let the hips settle.
If you're lying down,
Let the length of the back make contact with whatever's beneath you.
You don't have to be still yet,
Just find the position.
Let your eyes close if that feels okay,
Or let the gaze go soft,
Unfocused,
But not really looking at anything.
There's no right way to do this part,
The point is just to signal to yourself that you're here,
That this time is for something other than what you were just doing.
Notice that you're breathing,
Deeper or more impressive than it is.
The breath is already happening,
Maybe it's the belly that moves,
It's just a thing that's happening.
It has been this whole time.
Let that actually land for a second.
Notice the seat beneath the hips,
The backs of the thighs if you're sitting,
Or the length of the back if you're lying down,
The feet,
If they're touching the floor,
Feel that.
A specific pressure of the ground meeting the soles.
See if you can let a little more weight drop,
Not bite,
Stopping the subtle effort of holding yourself up.
You don't have to hold yourself up right now,
The ground,
Like walking through a house you live in and noticing what's there.
Sometimes there's a kind of holding there,
A low-grade tension we don't even notice until we look.
Just notice,
You don't have to change it.
The jaw,
This one's worth lingering on,
The jaw holds a lot.
See if it can soften just slightly,
Not forced,
More like permission.
The back teeth don't have to touch.
Whatever's true is fine,
Just let them be seen.
What's the quality here?
Sometimes it's open,
Sometimes there's a kind of compression.
Whatever you find,
Just acknowledge it,
You don't have to.
The lower back,
The hips,
Sometimes there's a lot stored here.
This is the other end,
Let your attention rest there for a moment.
That's all this was,
An act of arrival.
It's actually the whole thing.
Stay here for a little while longer,
No instructions,
Just the body.
If the mind wanders,
Let it come back.
There's nowhere else to be right now.
When you're ready,
Take your time.
Later.
